Abstract: In light of the scarcity of novel therapeutic agents that are effective, the pharmaceutical industry has found a newer source of therapeutic compounds in natural products and herbal medicine to address the current health problems in humans and animals. What is particularly promising about these agents is that they produce fewer side effects and are more cost effective than synthetic compounds. This means greater availability of these treatments particularly for less developed countries who can’t afford expensive treatments. The reduced side effects also mean greater patient tolerance and increased compliance thereby yielding maximal therapeutic effect without negatively impacting on quality of life. Among the natural products more frequently employed nowadays is propolis, a resin that is routinely collected by bees (Apis mellifera). Propolis contains flavonoids, caffeic acid esters and diterpenic acids, which provide the bactericidal, antiviral and antifungal properties to this product. The use of propolis to address a variety of conditions in small animal species is beginning to play an important role in the currently available treatments. Its use appears to be an effective treatment with no side effects at low cost. This paper reviews the different applications of this compound to treat diseases in dogs.

American Journal of Climate Change (AJCC) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ajcc.2014.32012
Abstract:

Citrus is one of the major fruit crops in Cuba. Its perennial nature, the planted area and the time of productive exploitation turn it into a potential sink of atmospheric carbon. The present study was focused on the obtainment of two models that allow the quantitative estimation of carbon retention by citrus groves. The research was done in two commercial groves: orange [Citrus sinensis (L) Osbeck] cv. “Valencia Late” and grapefruit (Citrus paradisi Macf.) cv. “Marsh Seedless” both on sour orange (Citrus aurantium L.) and planted on a typical red ferralitic soil of Artemisa province. Groves are located at 22°55' North and 82°40' West. Cuba’s climate is tropical, seasonally humid, with sea influence and semicontinentality features. Three issues were dealt with: 1) Determination of the total mean quantity of retained carbon by the aerial part of the trees using a destructive sampling method (Pattern Method) to estimate: the total volume of the tree, wood densities and green and dry biomass; 2) Determination of the total mean quantity of retained carbon by the aerial part of the trees using two Allometric Methods; and 3) Determination of the most effective Allometric Method to estimate the carbon retention by the aerial part of the trees. From the results, it is concluded that the evaluated methods were effective to reach a first quantitative approximation to carbon retention by citrus groves and under equal conditions, the Allometric Method 2 was more accurate to estimate the Total Carbon Content in “Valencia Late” orange, while for “Marsh Seedless” grapefruit the Allometric Method 1 provided the best estimate.

REDVET , 2009,
SummaryThe aim of the present work was to make a clinical andhaemochemical study in calves recently arrived to calf-rearing unit soas determine the morbility of respiratory and digestive dysfunctions. The first step was the clinical exploration and extraction of blood bymean of veni-puncture, to determine the presence of anaemia andhaemochemical studies, as well as, nose and rectum secretions wereobtained find out bovine rhinotracheitis virus. The results showed that calves were clinically affected and that the presence of anaemia, hipoproteinemia and hipogammaglobulinemia in calves recently transferred to calf-rearing unit is a risk factor for digestive andrespiratory dysfunctions associated to bovine rhinotracheitis virus.

Abstract:

Greenlight photoselective vaporisation of the prostate (GPVP) is progressively becoming an established treatment in patients with LUTS because it is a minimally invasive technique that achieves efficient haemostasis, making it the ideal technique for patients at high surgical risk. Material and Methods: To study of 133 patients with an ASA surgical risk score of 3 or 4, undergoing GPVP, with an analysis of perioperative outcome, IPSS, Qmax, IIEF-5 and complications during a five-year follow-up. Results: At 5 years the mean annual improvement in IPSS was stable, and at 5 years there was a 15.2 point improvement versus the preoperative score (p < 0.05). The Qmax showed an improvement of 14.9 ml/sec and was maintained at five years after surgery (p < 0.05). No patients were transfused or suffered urinary incontinence. 2.25% suffered major complications and there were no deaths. 3.1% of patients suffered de novo urgency. In the 5-year follow-up, five patients had to be reoperated. The quality of sexual health assessed by IIEF-5 before the procedure was scored at 14 points; the 5-year follow-up covering the preoperative period and all revisions did not show any worsening in the IIEF-5 score (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Due to its physical characteristics, in our opinion GPVP is now the treatment of choice in patients at high surgical risk. In our series, the risk of major/minor complications and transfusions was much lower than the same risks in conventional techniques. The objective results (Qmax and quality of life questionnaire) are equivalent to conventional techniques and persist over a 5-year follow-up.
