The Relationship between Cognitive Processing and Reading
Ooi Boon Keat,Khaidzir bin Hj. Ismail
Asian Social Science , 2011, DOI: 10.5539/ass.v7n10p44
Abstract: This study discusses the Cognitive Assessment System (CAS) in assessing cognitive processing. CAS is capable of measuring not only the cognitive ability and process but also of able to determine the deficits in relation with specific reading skills. Therefore, this study aims to examine the relationship of PASS cognitive processes with the reading components of Wide Range Achievement Test-4 (WRAT-4). The CAS and WRAT-4 were administered to a hundred primary standard three Malaysian children but based on American norms. The full scale of CAS mean scores was 98 which is the average level of cognitive processing among the subjects. While the WRAT-4 reading components showed the mean score of overall reading performance was 90 which slightly reach the average level. Correlation analysis revealed that cognitive processes were significantly correlated with overall reading performance with r=0789, p<0.01. Simultaneous and Planning processing had quite strong relationship with the overall reading performance which was r=0.724, p<0.01 and r=0.676, p<0.01 respectively. However, Successive processing had low score of r = 0.393, p < 0.01 for the correlation with reading comprehension. CAS is one of the alternatives in providing such capabilities in measuring cognitive processes that could predict reading deficits and relevant to identify performance on reading-related skills.

Abstract: This case study discusses one of the latest technology based instrument, the Cognitive Assessment System (CAS) in assessing cognitive functioning of Luria’s three functional units of brain or theoretical base of Planning, Attention, Simultaneous and Successive (PASS). CAS is capable of measuring not only the cognitive ability and process but also of determining intervention purposes for children with specific needs. Therefore, this study aims to examine the PASS cognitive functions and the use of CAS to subjects with Reading Difficulties (RD). Profiles of the CAS were firstly obtained from children with RD, and then the PASS scale standard scores were compared by using United State norms. The specific weakness of cognitive functioning was detected from the children with ESL reading difficulties. CAS was administered individually to 50 ESL poor achievers in standard 3 at Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Bandar Tun Hussein Onn (SRKBTHO). There were distinct PASS cognitive profiles among the poor achiever of ESL children and gender was not the determinant. The PASS scale standard scores showed 41% (n=20) is at average level, 30% (n=16) at low average level, 26% (n=13) at below average level and only 2% (n=1) at well below average level. There was no significant difference between girls and boys in term of cognitive processing. However, the poor achievers of English as Second Language (ESL) children were significantly low for simultaneous processing which is highly related to the ability of comprehension.

Songklanakarin Journal of Science and Technology , 2002,
Abstract: Thin Film Composite (TFC) polyamide membranes were prepared by interfacially polymerizing secondary amide (piperazine) and highly hydrophilic aromatic primary amide (3,5-diaminobenzoic acid) with trimesoyl chloride onto the polysulfone support. The salt rejection and flux of these composite membranes were measured at various feed pressures. Incorporation of the 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid cause an increase in hydraulic permeance and flux but loss in the rejection of NaCl and Na2SO4. Higher concentration of 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid produced a loose and defected skin layer but small quantity of 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid can improved the flux and rejection of Na2SO4. The reaction between the 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid, piperazine and trimesoyl chloride was further confirmed using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR).

Abstract: The advancement of database engine and multi-core processors technologies have enable database insertion to be implemented concurrently via multithreading programming. The objective of this work is to evaluate the performance of using multithreading technique to perform database insertion of large data set with known size to enhance the performance of data access layer (DAL) particularly on the bulk-insertion operation. The performance evaluation includes techniques such as using single database connection, multithreads the insertion process with respective database connections, single threaded bulk insertion and multithreaded bulk insertion. MySQL 5.2 and SQL Server 2008 were used and the experimental results show that the performance of databases do not scale linearly with the number of threads. This work justifies our intention in developing a smart data access layer that autonomously decides the number of threads to spawn in order to improve the performance of the DAL.

World Journal of Gastroenterology , 2010,
Abstract: AIM: To identify differentially expressed hydrophobic proteins in colorectal cancer.METHODS: Eighteen pairs of colorectal cancerous tissues in addition to tissues from normal mucosa were analysed. Hydrophobic proteins were extracted from the tissues, separated using 2-D gel electrophoresis and analysed using Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). Statistical analysis of the proteins was carried out in order to determine the significance of each protein to colorectal cancer (CRC) and also their relation to CRC stages, grades and patients’ gender.RESULTS: Thirteen differentially expressed proteins which were expressed abundantly in either cancerous or normal tissues were identified. A number of these proteins were found to relate strongly with a particular stage or grade of CRC. In addition, the association of these proteins with patient gender also appeared to be significant.CONCLUSION: Stomatin-like protein 2 was found to be a promising biomarker for CRC, especially in female patients. The differentially expressed proteins identified were associated with CRC and may act as drug target candidates.

Respiratory Research , 2006, DOI: 10.1186/1465-9921-7-126
Abstract: Neutralizing mAbs against H5 hemagglutinin were humanized and introduced into C57BL/6 mice (1, 5, or 10 mg/kg bodyweight) one day prior to-, one day post- and three days post-lethal challenge with H5N1 A/Vietnam/1203/04 virus. Efficacy was determined by observation of weight loss as well as survival. Two mAbs neutralizing for antigenically variant H5N1 viruses, A/Vietnam/1203/04 and A/Hong Kong/213/03 were identified and humanized without loss of specificity. Both antibodies exhibited prophylactic efficacy in mice, however, VN04-2-huG1 performed better requiring only 1 mg/kg bodyweight for complete protection. When used to treat infection VN04-2-huG1 was also completely protective, even when introduced three days post infection, although higher dose of antibody was required.Prophylaxis and treatment using neutralizing humanized mAbs is efficacious against lethal challenge with A/Vietnam/1203/04, providing proof of principle for the use of passive antibody therapy as a containment option in the event of pandemic influenza. With the initial outbreak of pneumonia caused by highly pathogenic H5N1 influenza A virus in Hong Kong in 1997 resulting in the death of 6 of the 18 infected individuals [1,2], the potential for emergence of a pandemic influenza was recognized [3]. Mass slaughtering of poultry appeared to halt the outbreak. However, H5N1 viruses of various genotypes have spread across Southeast Asia and have continued to cause disease outbreaks in poultry and aquatic birds. Toward the end of 2003, a single genotype (the "Z-genotype") became dominant and was responsible for outbreaks in Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam throughout 2004 [4], causing death in ~50% of the confirmed cases.Since this time, the H5N1 influenza epidemic of the Asian bird population has continued. In addition, infection of migratory birds has resulted in increased global spread of the virus with reports of H5N1 influenza causing mortality in poultry and aquatic birds throughout Asia, Europe and

International Journal of Network and Mobile Technologies , 2011,
Abstract: This study empirically investigates the factors that affect the users’ intention to adopt broadband by incorporating individual characteristics with the conventional Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The research was conducted in Malaysia using a self-administered questionnaire. Out of the 350 questionnaires, only 172 are usable, thus yielding a response rate of 49.14 percent. Results were subsequently analyzed by employing the multiple regression analysis. Individual characteristics such as individual innovativeness, age, gender and qualification were found to have significant relationship with perceived usefulness (PU). However, on the relationship with perceived ease of use (PEOU), only individual innovativeness, age and gender were found to be related. The results also support a positive relationship between PU and behavioural intention and the mediating effect of PEOU on PU. The findings from this study provide useful information not only for the Internet service providers, software developers but also government agencies especially when formulating their marketing and business strategies. The study has successfully extended the TAM by incorporating individual characteristics. The extended TAM provides a comprehensive view on the users’ acceptance on broadband adoption from the perspective of emerging markets.
