Towards a Corpus-Based Analysis of Anglicisms in Spanish: A Case Study
José L. Oncins-Martínez
International Journal of English Studies (IJES) , 2009, DOI: 10.6018/ijes.1.1.99551
Abstract: This paper aims to show some of the advantages of and the need for using corpora for exploring and assessing Anglicisms in contemporary Spanish. In order to do this a case study is presented: the adverb dramáticamente, as it is taking on the new sense ‘espectacularmente’ under the influence of English dramatically. The presence of this adverb with this new sense in contemporary Spanish is explored and supported with the data found in CORDE and CREA, the two corpora of the Royal Spanish Academy. Since the paper also seeks to show in what ways the Spanish lexicon is being influenced by English, evidence from two major English corpora, the BNC and the COCA, will be used.

Abstract: background: electromyography and therapeutic behavior. procedures: this study was carried out with a woman, 45year old, after 4 months from being submitted to fronto-temporal craniotomy originated an aneurysm. the right anterior temporal muscle was removed from its insertion. after the surgery, the patient had dysfunction in temporal muscle and in temporo-mandibular joint, with reduction of the opening of mouth, pain while speaking and eating. electromyography was used to quantitatively record the electrical activity of the temporal and masseter muscles in the initial evaluation and during the therapeutic process. records were made at rest position, maximum occlusion and chew. they did miofuncional therapy throughout the process. results: examination data showed a significant increase in the electrical activity of the right anterior temporal muscle and a reduction in the activity of the left anterior temporal muscle. the initial record showed a lower electrical activity on the right side compared to the left. with the miofunctional exercises there was a more effective participation of the right anterior temporal muscle, greater openness of mouth, without pain, making easier chewing and speech tasks, harmonizing the stomatognathic system. conclusion: comparative records concerning electromyography in different stages of the therapeutic process helped and directed the best therapy, achieving a balance concerning the functions of breathing, sucking, chewing, swallowing and speech related to the stomatognathic system, considering the limitations of the case.

Abstract: TEMA: eletromiografia e conduta terapêutica. Abstract: we present a very unusual clinical case of giant cell arteritis with uterus involvement, in a women of 66 years old, that began clinical features of pain and functional limitation of shoulders and hip 3 mouth before been operated of uterus prolapse with hysterectomy. biopsy of uterus found affected arterial vesels with wall sclerosis and granulomatous inflamation with giant cells, without necrosis, involving media and perivascular portions suggesting giant cell arteritis. in a previous reports review, we only found ten similar clinical cases. in that cases, clinical features were no suggestif of the disease. althougt the well known tendency of arteritis to involve some specific vascular areas, the case we present is an example of the systemic course of the disease and his dificulty to diagnose.

Abstract: A Cluster randomised clinical trial will be conducted in 38 Primary Health Care Centres located in Barcelona, Spain and its surrounding areas. The centres are randomly allocated to the multidisciplinary intervention or to usual clinical care. Patients between 18 and 65 years old (n = 932; 466 per arm) and with a diagnostic of a non-specific sub-acute low back pain are included. Patients in the intervention group are receiving the recommendations of clinical practice guidelines, in addition to a biopsychosocial multidisciplinary intervention consisting of group educational sessions lasting a total of 10 hours. The main outcome is change in the score in the Roland Morris disability questionnaire at three months after onset of pain. Other outcomes are severity of pain, quality of life, duration of current non-specific low back pain episode, work sick leave and duration, Fear Avoidance Beliefs and Goldberg Questionnaires. Outcomes will be assessed at baseline, 3, 6 and 12 months. Analysis will be by intention to treat. The intervention effect will be assessed through the standard error of measurement and the effect-size. Responsiveness of each scale will be evaluated by standardised response mean and receiver-operating characteristic method. Recovery according to the patient will be used as an external criterion. A multilevel regression will be performed on repeated measures. The time until the current episode of low back pain takes to subside will be analysed by Cox regression. We hope to provide evidence of the effectiveness of the proposed biopsychosocial multidisciplinary intervention in avoiding the chronification of low back pain, and to reduce the duration of non-specific low back pain episodes. If the intervention is effective, it could be applied to Primary Health Care Centres.ISRCTN21392091Low back pain (LBP), in any of its forms (acute, sub-acute or chronic), is a common and important reason for consultation with the general practitioner (GP).
