Abstract:

The therapeutic properties of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 and ginseng extracts have been well documented. The objective of this study was to measure growth and survival of L. rhamnosus GR-1 in milk fortified with ginseng extracts during storage period of 28 days. Five formulations of milk (1% fat) were prepared. Two samples were fortified with alcoholic ginseng extract (AGE: 150 μg/mL, AGE: 500 μg/mL) and the other two samples were fortified with aqueous ginseng extract (QGE: 150 μg/mL, QGE: 500 μg/ml) and one with no ginseng extract (C). The mixtures were autoclaved for 15 min, cooled to 37?C and inoculated with 1% starter culture. The samples were then incubated anaerobically at 37overnight. Selective MRS agar containing 0.015 g/L fusidic acid was used to enumerate L. rhamnosus GR-1 after 1, 14, and 28 d storage at 4. All ginseng-fortified samples supported the growth and survival of L. rhamnosus GR-1, as viable counts were detected at each measurement point throughout the 28 d storage period. After 1 d of storage, total colony counts for L. rhamnosus GR-1 in AGE: 150 μg/mL and AGE: 500 μg/mL were 1.3 × 109 and 1.4 × 109 CFU/mL, respectively; probiotic counts in QGE 150 μg/mL and

Lately, the search for natural growth promoters to replace antibiotics, restricted by internationals regulations, has increased. The in vitro inhibitory activity of a red quebracho extract (Schinopsisi lorentzii) composed of polyphenols over some pathogenic bacteria was determined, comparing it to Bacitracin Methylene Disalicylate at 11 %. Of the first one, doses of 500 ppm up to 0,05 ppm in increasing dilutions were tested. The Bacitracin was used of 330 ppm up to 0,03 ppm. The method of diffusion in agar, modified by Vignolo et al, was applied on Salmonella gallinarum, Escherichi coli, Clostridium perfrigens and Staphylococcus aureus. The extract, as well as the Bacitracin, acted against Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria in various concentrations. These data lead us to suppose that polyphenols may become a tool to substitute antibiotic growth promoters, providing a natural product, safe for human health.

Abstract: A systematic search from Medline, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and ISI Web of Science was conducted. Of the 1810 unique papers that were retrieved, four met the inclusion/exclusion criteria and were analyzed. The results indicate that diabetes education is effective when it incorporates diet and exercise components, while using a design that addresses challenges such as cognition, motivation, and weight gain that may result from antipsychotics. This paper begins to point to effective interventions that will improve type II diabetes management for people with schizophrenia or other schizoaffective disorders. In 2005, the World Health Organization (WHO) predicted that the prevalence of type II diabetes will double by 2030, to affect 366 million people globally [1]. Consequently WHO developed an action plan to increase access to type II diabetes healthcare by 2013 [2]. The increasing rate of this chronic illness is a concern because when glucose (sugar) cannot be absorbed by vital organs, glucose remains in the bloodstream. This leads to persistently high blood glucose levels, which is used as an indicator in diabetes management. Consistently high blood glucose is linked to complications such as cardiovascular disease, blindness, neuropathy, kidney failure, and poor wound healing resulting in infection that may lead to amputation [3].Not everyone is at equal risk for the development of this chronic illness. Individuals suffering from schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorders are at a greater risk of type II diabetes, with prevalence rates reaching more than two times those of the general population [4-6]. While it has been reported that people with schizophrenia may be genetically predisposed to type II diabetes, several other risk factors could contribute to the development of type II diabetes among people with schizophrenia [7]. Some antipsychotic medications such as olanzapine and clozapine, can cause side effects that promote the onset of type II diabetes [8-10]. These side ef
