Suitability of Irbid Clay as Compacted Liners for Landfill, Jordan  [PDF]

Abstract:

The goal of this study is to investigate the possibility of using the Irbid city clayey soil as compacted clay liner. The geotechnical properties and the permeability characteristics of compacted clayey soil sample obtained from the eastern part of Irbid city were determined to evaluate their suitability as compacted clay liner. Falling head permeability test, unconfined compressive strength and volumetric shrinkage test were conducted on soil samples that were compacted at about 0% and 3% wet of its optimum water content. The leakage rates expected through clay-only and composite geomembrane-clay liners were determined. It could be concluded based on the results of the geotechnical tests and leachate rate calculations that Irbid clay is appropriate to be used as compacted landfill liner material.

Applicability of the theory of planned behavior in predicting intended use of Voluntary HIV Counseling and Testing services among teachers of Harari Region, Ethiopia

Abstract: Background: The predictive validity and applicability of Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) may be a promising model for understanding and predicting intended behaviors to use VCT services. The need for theory based study would thus be essential in designing evidence based HIV-related interventions in the future. Objectives: To examine the applicability of the Theory of Planned Behavior and the additional predictive role of perceived risk in predicting intended use of Voluntary HIV Counseling and Testing (VCT) services. Methods: A cross sectional study design was conducted among 20 randomly selected schools in Harari Region between March and April 2009. Four hundred ninety seven randomly selected teachers consented to participate in the study giving a response rate of 87.8%. Self administered questionnaire, adopted from the TPB was used for data collection. Multiple linear regression models were used to predict the role of important variables that can influence the intention to use VCT among teachers using SPSS version 15. Result: More than half (53.7%) who had never used VCT service were considered in the analysis for the intended VCT service use. All the modal variables correlated significantly with behavioral intention. Subjective norm (r=0.45, p<0.001), perceived behavioral control (r=0.42, p<0.001) attitude (r=0.33, p<0.001) and perceived susceptibility(r=0.25, p<0.001), were significantly and positively correlated while perceived severity to the illness (r= -0.14, P<0.001) was significantly but negatively correlated with behavioral intention. Perceived severity of the illness, normative belief and having high level of self control were the major predictors for intended use of VCT. Conclusion: The study demonstrated that the TBP is a useful model for evidence based educational programs focusing mainly on creating supportive social system and strengthens their self efficacy for positive VCT uptake. VCT uptake and associated factors among teachers from Harari Administrative Region

Abstract: sector which is vital to the creation of human capital is also equally affected. The loss of skilled and experienced teachers due to the problem is increasingly compromising the provision of quality education in most African countries and thus, needs appropriate intervention measures that reverse the current trend. Objectives: To assess the prevalence and determining factors of VCT uptake among teachers of Harari Administrative Region. Methods: A cross sectional study design with analytic component was conducted among 566 teachers drawn from 20 randomly selected schools of Harari Administrative Region from March to April 2009. Self administered questionnaire, adapted from previous relevant studies was used to estimate the prevalence of VCT uptake and the various socio-demographic and psychological factors. Data were entered and analyzed using bi-variate and multivariate models. Results: A total number of 497 teachers responded to the questionnaire adequately making the response rate of 87.8%. The mean age of the participants was 34.68 ranging from 18 – 61 years. There were more teachers from urban areas (72.0%) and most of them were males (62.2%). About half (54.1%) were married and few (5.2%) were divorced. The vast majority (98.6%) heard about the confidential VCT service and their major sources of information were mass media (85.3%) and health workers (56.2%). The prevalence of VCT uptake was 46.3%. The odds of utilizing VCT significantly increased with being younger age group, female and first and second cycle teachers’ category. Conclusions: The major factors identified for increased uptake of VCT are gender, age and salary category. Actions targeting the males, non-youth age group and low grade teachers’ are necessary to follow their peer groups to utilize the VCT service in order to achieve the goal of education set for 2015.

Abstract:

Deploying and Implementing RFID Systems for tracking and controlling products in supply chain management is not affordable for small and midsized companies due to its complexity, cost, and difficulties pertaining data management and maintenance. Cloud computing can be used to mitigate the risks associated with the implementation and deployment of RFID based on system in supply chain management because the complex system for data filtering, management and maintenance can be implemented on the cloud that otherwise requires the purchase of new hardware, staff and professional services.

Random Orderings and Unique Ergodicity of Automorphism Groups

Abstract: We show that the only random orderings of finite graphs that are invariant under isomorphism and induced subgraph are the uniform random orderings. We show how this implies the unique ergodicity of the automorphism group of the random graph. We give similar theorems for other structures, including, for example, metric spaces. These give the first examples of uniquely ergodic groups, other than compact groups and extremely amenable groups, after Glasner and Weiss's example of the group of all permutations of the integers. We also contrast these results to those for certain special classes of graphs and metric spaces in which such random orderings can be found that are not uniform.
A Local-Dominance Theory of Voting Equilibria

Abstract: It is well known that no reasonable voting rule is strategyproof. Moreover, the common Plurality rule is particularly prone to strategic behavior of the voters and empirical studies show that people often vote strategically in practice. Multiple game-theoretic models have been proposed to better understand and predict such behavior and the outcomes it induces. However, these models often make unrealistic assumptions regarding voters' behavior and the information on which they base their vote. We suggest a new model for strategic voting that takes into account voters' bounded rationality, as well as their limited access to reliable information. We introduce a simple behavioral heuristic based on \emph{local dominance}, where each voter considers a set of possible world states without assigning probabilities to them. This set is constructed based on prospective candidates' scores (e.g., available from an inaccurate poll). In a \emph{voting equilibrium}, all voters vote for candidates not dominated within the set of possible states. We prove that these voting equilibria exist in the Plurality rule for a broad class of local dominance relations (that is, different ways to decide which states are possible). Furthermore, we show that in an iterative setting where voters may repeatedly change their vote, local dominance-based dynamics quickly converge to an equilibrium if voters start from the truthful state. Weaker convergence guarantees in more general settings are also provided. Using extensive simulations of strategic voting on generated and real preference profiles, we show that convergence is fast and robust, that emerging equilibria are consistent across various starting conditions, and that they replicate widely known patterns of human voting behavior such as Duverger's law. Further, strategic voting generally improves the quality of the winner compared to truthful voting.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to assess the knee joints of osteoarthritis patients in terms of clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measurements and draw definitive conclusions from these quantimetric data. In order to achieve the above-mentioned goal, the knees of individuals from two distinct groups were examined by MRI. One group consisted of osteoarthritis patients while the other comprised the control individuals. All individuals from both groups underwent clinical and MRI measurements concerning their knees. These data were compared by using the statistical software from the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) v.15 program. Statistically significant differences were found between the control and patients groups in terms of the measurements of the second (short) diameter of the medial femoral condyle, and the intercondylar distance (p < 0.05). In addition to these findings, the Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) curve analysis gave statistically significant results for both of these measurements. The cutoff values for these criteria were as follows in sequence order: a sensitivity of 75% and a specificity of 52% for the medial femoral condyle, and a sensitivity of 70% and a specificity of 70% for the intercondylar distance. The ROC curve data may not be a deterministic outcome alone for this study. But it may in fact have a significant meaning when it is evaluated together with other statistically significant data. The t-test for Equality of Means, for example, gave significant results, concerning the measurements of the short axis of the medial femoral condyle and the intercondylar distance. It is well known that it is the medial portion of the knee joint which deteriorates the most during the process of osteoarthritis of the knee (OAK), and this complies with the results of this study.

Abstract: In this paper, a novel harmonic modeling technique by utilizing the concept of multi-terminal components is presented and applied to frequency scan analysis in multiphase distribution system. The proposed modeling technique is based on gathering the same phase busses and elements as a separate group (phase grouping technique, PGT) and uses multi-terminal components to model three-phase distribution system. Using multi- terminal component and PGT, distribution system elements, particularly, lines and transformers can effectively be modeled even in harmonic domain. The proposed modeling technique is applied to a test system for frequency scan analysis in order to show the frequency response of the test system in single and three-phase conditions. Consequently, the effects of mutual coupling and transformer connection types on three-phase frequency scan responses are analyzed for symmetrical and asymmetrical line configurations.

Abstract: This Article discusses a comprehensive review of biomass energy sources, environment and sustainable development. This includes all the biomass energy technologies, energy efficiency systems, energy conservation scenarios, energy savings and other mitigation measures necessary to reduce emissions. The current literature is reviewed regarding the ecological, social, cultural and economic impacts of biomass technology. This article gives an overview of present and future use of biomass as an industrial feed-stock for production of fuels, chemicals and other materials. However, to be truly competitive in an open market situation, higher value products are required. Results suggest that biomass technology must be encouraged, promoted, invested, implemented, and demonstrated, but especially in remote rural areas.
