Meaning Making, Uncertainty Reduction, and Autobiographical Memory: A Replication and Reinterpretation of the TALE Questionnaire  [PDF]
Orlando J. Olivares
Psychology (PSYCH) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2012.32028
Abstract: The present research was guided by two primary goals: 1) replicate the empirical structure of the Thinking about Life Experiences (TALE) questionnaire (Bluck, Alea, Habermas, & Rubin, 2005); and 2) explore how the functions of autobiographical memory may interact and support one another. Toward the second goal, it is suggested that the potential functions of autobiographical memory may be understood from an existential framework that is grounded by two principles: humans are driven by a need for meaning and meaning is found in relation to others and other things in the world. In this pursuit of meaning making, and a desire to know what to expect from the world, humans seek to create a coherent set of relations among the various existential elements in their lives (Heine, Proulx, & Vohs, 2006); accordingly, humans strive to reduce uncertainty about the world and their place in it. As such, the TALE was reinterpreted using a relational framework and a 28-item self-report measure was developed. Participants completed the TALE and the reinterpreted TALE (RTALE). The results provide some support for the 3-factor structure of the TALE. The proposed 4-factor structure of the RTALE was supported.
The effect of lead on the phytochemistry of Tithonia diversifolia exposed to roadside automotive pollution or grown in pots of Pb-supplemented soil
Olivares, Elizabeth;
Brazilian Journal of Plant Physiology , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S1677-04202003000300004
Abstract: tithonia diversifolia, a ruderal weedy species utilized in agroforestry, is widely distributed in the tropics, often being found in wasteland, margins of polluted city rivers and roadsides. the objective of this study was to compare plants sampled at a light and heavy traffic roadside for metal concentration and foliar compounds which may be related to senescence and/or detoxification of metals. the field survey was followed by an experiment in pots of pb-acetate-supplemented soil to verify if the same response is obtained under controlled conditions with regard to pb. the concentration of pb in leaves and roots of plants sampled at a heavy traffic roadside was higher than in samples from a light traffic site. the content of cr, al, fe, cu and ni was also higher in leaves but not of roots in plants from the pollutedsite. no significant differences were found in the concentrations of chlorophyll, carotenoids, uv-absorbing compounds and proteins, nor in the chlorophyll a/b ratio and lipid peroxidation of leaves collected at both sites. on the other hand, pb-contaminated leaves and roots showed higher acid phosphatase activity while the foliar nitrate reductase activity and specific leaf mass were lower. an increase of leaf phenol concentration, thought to be involved in the detoxification of metals, was observed in the polluted field plants and in roots in the pot experiment, where pb-acetatewas supplied to the soil, but the changes observed in acid phosphatase and specific leaf mass in the field were not found in the pot experiment.

Selective cloning of Gaussian states by linear optics
Stefano Olivares
Physics , 2007, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevA.76.022305
Abstract: We investigate the performances of a selective cloning machine based on linear optical elements and Gaussian measurements, which allows to clone at will one of the two incoming input states. This machine is a complete generalization of a 1 to 2 cloning scheme demonstrated by U. L. Andersen et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. vol. 94, 240503 (2005)]. The input-output fidelity is studied for generic Gaussian input state and the effect of non-unit quantum efficiency is also taken into account. We show that if the states to be cloned are squeezed states with known squeezing parameter, then the fidelity can be enhanced using a third suitable squeezed state during the final stage of the cloning process. A binary communication protocol based on the selective cloning machne is also discussed.
Pricing of Basket Options Using Polynomial Approximations
Pablo Olivares
Quantitative Finance , 2014,
Abstract: In this paper we use Bernstein and Chebyshev polynomials to approximate the price of some basket options under a bivariate Black-Scholes model. The method consists in expanding the price of a univariate related contract after conditioning on the remaining underlying assets and calculating the mixed exponential-power moments of a Gaussian distribution that arise as a consequence of such approximation. Our numerical implementation on spread contracts shows the method is as accurate as a standard Monte Carlo approach at considerable lesser computational effort.
Maximum Likelihood Estimators for a Supercritical Branching Diffusion Process

International Journal of Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/515192
Abstract: The log-likelihood of a nonhomogeneous Branching Diffusion Process under several conditions assuring existence and uniqueness of the diffusion part and nonexplosion of the branching process. Expressions for different Fisher information measures are provided. Using the semimartingale structure of the process and its local characteristics, a Girsanov-type result is applied. Finally, an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process with finite reproduction mean is studied. Simulation results are discussed showing consistency and asymptotic normality. 1. Introduction Some spatial-temporal models are often used to describe the behavior of particles, which are moving randomly in a domain and reproducing after a random time. We consider a Branching Diffusion Process (BDP), consisting in particles performing independent diffusion movements and having a random numbers of children at random times. In [1], for example, a simple model of cells with binary splitting after an exponentially distributed random lifetime is considered, where cells move according independent Brownian motions. More recently, [2] studied a model in order to describe pollution spread through dissemination of particles in the atmosphere. Additionally, the authors take into account the occurrence of particles’ mass variations due to random divisions during their lifetimes. For applications in genetic populations see [3]. Also, in [4], the recurrence of a BDP on manifolds is studied. In [5], a particle system is considered in a more general context, where interaction among individuals is allowed. There, a link between the associated martingale problem and the infinitesimal generator is established. For a noninteracting BDP, the uniqueness of the martingale problem is found in [6] together with the analysis of the limit behavior of the process. On the other hand, the statistical approach of this kind of models remains less explored. In [1], under continuous observations upon a fixed time , it obtained the maximum likelihood estimators for the variance and the rate of death of a Brownian motion with a deterministic binary reproduction law. In [7], using a least square approach the parameters of the BDP are also estimated. In [8, 9], a birth and death processes in a flow particle system are considered. There, the absolute continuity of the probability law for the corresponding canonical process is obtained. We follow a similar approach, but allowing the possibility to have more than one particle at birth times, as our case, in which introduces additional complexity due to the exponential growth of the model. There

Abstract: the food based dietary guidelines (fbdg) from chile development in 2005, considered the update epidemiological data and experiences from de first version published in 1997. the actual fbdg includes technical communication prepared by a committee of experts who were supported by mass media communication professionals in order to make the information more attractive and understandable by general population. this article pretend to point out the strategy dissemination of the fbdg, found in government programs, food industry healthy alternative products, and the interest of mass media because of the high prevalence of obesity, and also to identify challenging social marketing strategies implemented in developed countries which nutritionist and health professionals using fbdg could apply in nutritional interventions.
La presencia de los dioses en el Hiparco de Jenofonte

Abstract: the religious aspects in xenophon's works have been studied by several scholars, who for the most part have doubted if he actually believed in the existence of gods or if their presence in his works was rather cursory and conventional. my own analysis of the hipparchus, a treatise on equestrian-military matters written towards the end of xenophon's life, reveals that his attitude towards the gods betrays a genuine belief.
