IREDIA, el Secreto de Atram: un Videojuego para Educar en Valores

Abstract: Iredia, el Secreto de Atram es un videojuego de plataformas 2D creado para XBOX 360 y PC desarrollado por el CEIEC de la Universidad Francisco de Vitoria con el objetivo de sensibilizar a ni os entre 8 y 11 a os sobre la discapacidad auditiva a través del edutainment (uso de los videojuegos para un propósito educativo explícito y no únicamente para entretener). El juego explica aspectos básicos de esta discapacidad a través de una aventura de toques fantásticos y está formado por cinco niveles de juego, cada uno con un objetivo didáctico diferente, donde se abordan aspectos relacionados con el sonido y la discapacidad auditiva. El desarrollo se ha basado en cuatro pilares tecnológicos, XNA, Tomahawk Engine, Editor de Niveles y SpriteSheet Packer.

Non-perturbative Thermodynamics in Matrix String Theory

Abstract: A study of the thermodynamics in IIA Matrix String Theory is presented. The free string limit is calculated and seen to exactly reproduce the usual result. When energies are enough to excite non-perturbative objects like D-particles and specially membranes, the situation changes because they add a large number of degrees of freedom that do not appear at low energies. There seems to be a negative specific heat (even in the Microcanonical Ensemble) that moves the asymptotic temperature to zero. Besides, the mechanism of interaction and attachment of open strings to D-particles and D-membranes is analyzed.

A Matrix Model for Type 0 Strings

Abstract: A matrix model for type 0 strings is proposed. It consists in making a non-supersymmetric orbifold projection in the Yang-Mills theory and identifying the infrared configurations of the system at infinite coupling with strings. The correct partition function is calculated. Also, the usual spectrum of branes is found. Both type A and B models are constructed. The model in a torus contains all the degrees of freedom and interpolates between the four string theories (IIA, IIB, 0A, 0B) and the M theory as different limits are taken.

Abstract: An integrated computational method to solve the Zener-Hollomon equation has been developed by the authors. This method solves the fitting problem of the equation of Zener-Hollomon for wide ranges of applied stress, strain rate and work temperature by means of the progressive application of three kinds of algorithms. In the first place a program, by means of a reiterated linear regression by planes, allows to get some values that will be later the initial values of a second block of algorithms. It permits also to purify the experimental data set. The second block of algorithms carries out a fitting by nonlinear least squares using a variation of the modified Gauss-Newton method. In the third place a group of programs is chained that permit iterate starting by the solution of the previous program approaching (if it is necessary) line by line in R2 until the optimum value is reached. All this with a support of statistical analysis for they determine the accuracy of each step, of the data, of the residuals and of the last fitting reached. Se presenta un método de ordenador integrado, desarrollado por los autores, para resolver la ecuación de Zener-Hollomon. Este método resuelve el problema del ajuste de la ecuación de Zener-Hollomon para amplios rangos de tensión aplicada, velocidad de deformación y temperatura de trabajo, mediante la aplicación progresiva de tres tipos de algoritmos. En primer lugar, una regresión reiterada multivariante por planos, para obtener unos valores que serán considerados como iniciales para un segundo bloque de algoritmos, además de depurar la base experimental de datos. El segundo bloque de algoritmos realiza un ajuste por mínimos cuadrados no lineales usando una modificación del método de Gauss-Newton modificado. En tercer lugar se encadena un grupo de programas que permiten iterar a partir de la solución del programa no lineal acercándose (si es preciso) por líneas en R2 hasta alcanzar la solución óptima. Todo ello con un soporte de análisis estadístico de la bondad de cada paso, de los datos y los residuos y del ajuste final conseguido.
Evaluación del espesor de capas delgadas mediante análisis EDS y simulación de Monte Carlo

Abstract: This work shows a method to evaluate the thin layer thickness by the X ray dispersive energy (EDS) technique. The analytical measures of the area of characteristic peaks carried out with this technique are complemented with electron trajectories on the interaction volume byMonte Carlo simulation. These together with the estimations obtained for the characteristic peaks intensities according to Bethe, Joy&Luo algorithm makes possible to estimate the thickness of samples. En este trabajo se presenta un método de evaluación de espesores de capas delgadas mediante la técnica de energías dispersivas de rayos X (EDS). Las medidas analíticas de las áreas de los picos característicos de los elementos detectados en las capas, obtenidas mediante esta técnica, se complementan con simulaciones de Monte Carlo de las trayectorias de los electrones en el volumen de interacción. Esto, junto con las estimaciones de la intensidad de los picos característicos obtenidos mediante el algoritmo de Bethe, Joy & Luo, posibilita realizar la estimación de los espesores de las muestras analizadas.
Lutzomyia longipalpis Breeding—A Probable Breeding Substrate for Lutzomyia longipalpis in Nature  [PDF]

Abstract:

The identifying of the preferred breeding sites of sand fly immature forms is quite important to the understanding of the vector’s biology and the development of more effective control strategies for leishmaniasis. In the present study, it was analyzed experimentally; the potential of dog feces of serving as breeding substrate to Lutzomyia longipalpis. Two situations were tested: 1) the life cycle of the insects from larvae to adults, 2) the whole cycle from adults to adults. Our results demonstrated for the first time that: 1) L. longipalpis can be easily bred in dog feces, suggesting that it could represent a potential raising substrate to immature forms for this species; 2) L. longipalpis larvae are able to make galleries on a substrate, literally burying themselves in this to function also as a shelter; 3) from the previous information that dogs infected with Ancylostoma caninum can present dodecanoic acid in their feces, we suggested that this substrate may be particularly more attractive to L. longipalpis females seen that this molecule is the same component of their oviposition pheromone, which is produced by the accessory glands and secreted onto the eggs; 4) after the copulation the males may landing on the substrate and continued beating the wings intermittently until the death in a similar behavior also noticed in other situations associated to kairomones response or pheromone production. Therefore, we suggested that it is very likely that dog excrements could serve as an important breeding substrate for L. longipalpis in endemic areas of visceral leishmaniasis in the New World.
