Abstract: this study aimed at relating sociodemographic variables, anxiety levels and oral health beliefs with the level of patient satisfaction in oral health. a sample of 342 patients was selected by systematic sampling. dissatisfied patients were characterized by using a total prosthesis, by considering that oral diseases can be serious and treatments are costly and by recognizing that dental diseases affect self-esteem and that they are afraid of visiting the dentist. dissatisfaction was related to sociodemographic characteristics, severe anxiety, general and dental health condition, perceived susceptibility and benefits, self-efficacy, fear to visit the dentist, easy access to a dentist and the need to visit the dentist for a check-up.

Abstract: Introduction: the accessibility to promotional and preventive services for the hypertensive population, is one of the strategies of public health, in order to reduce the risks of getting sick and dying in this population. Evaluating the obstacles to access these services, allows the reorientation of healthy policies, in order to be able to guarantee a good quality of life and decrease the inequality. Methods: descriptive study of 422 hypertensive people, which evaluated their perceptions of promotional and preventive actions. Results: patients from different health institutions participated. 70.5% with equal or lesser monthly incomes to the minimum salary wage, low schooling; only 8% has access to programs of physical activity. Conclusions: the accessibility is determined by 5 components and the promotional and preventive services are guaranteed among the lower income population that belongs to the subsidiary regime: participating in health clubs and executing physical activity. These findings were not found in the population with a regime by contribution.
EVALUACIóN DE UNA PRUEBA QUE MIDE LA SUSCEPTIBILIDAD DEL ESMALTE A LA CARIES DENTAL

Abstract: objective: to correlate the results of the colorimetric test with the cavities history of young adult patients to determine the possibility to use this test as an indicator of susceptibility of the adult enamel compared to acid dissolution from dental plaque or extrinsic erosive factors. method: correlational analytic study with sample size determination and a 95% confidence interval, 80% 1:1 rate , 1:5 risk rate. sample: 87 people with cavities history in the group and 83 people in the healthy group in an at random selection at educational institutions for adults in manizales. inclusion criteria: being 18 -20 years old and having upper anterior teeth. they signed an informed consent. colorimetric technique was applied in both groups. 2.8mm absorbent paper discs impregnated with a violet crystal solution were used as well as an acid etching (chloridric acid, 1.9 ph) and a ph colorimetric scale ., sensitivity and specificity kappa tests were applied. results: resistance according to the test was 55% and non-resistance was 45%. according to kappa's test the concordance between the test and enamel susceptibility is low (ic: 0.59 - 1.47 kappa 0.1). sensitivity (36%) and positive predictive value (40%) were low. specificity (45%) and negative predictive value (40%) were also low. conclusions: no concordance was found between enamel susceptibility to acid dissolution according to the test used in this research project and the past experience of cavities in young adults.
Potencial erosivo de las bebidas industriales sobre el esmalte dental

Abstract: objectives: to determine the erosive potential of several beverages by means of ph determination and phosphate and fluoride concentrations. methods: for their analysis, beverages were grouped into sprinkling colas, orange/lime/lemon sprinkling beverages orange juices, sports drinks and alcohol-containing beverages. a calibrated and verified piece of equipment was used to measure ph three times. phosphate concentration was estimated by gravity method of kinoline molybdate whereas fluoride concentration was measured with a fluoride ion-specific electrode. results: colas, one of the sprinkling beverage flavoured orange-lime-lemon and one orange juice recorded ph values lower than 2,14. the highest contents of phosphate was found in white wine (6,44 mmol/l). sports drinks, two orange beverages, one beer, one red sprinkling drink, vodka and white wine, did not show any fluoride contents. the rest of beverages was under 0,23 parts per million fluorides. conclusions: according to ph values, the beverages with possible erosive potential are sprinkling colas, orange/lime/lemon sprinkling beverages, sprinkling red drink, orange juices, fruit juices and one beer. none of beverages had fluoride contents enough to reduce the erosive potential. just three beverages including beer, orange juice and white wine exhibited phosphate values that could somehow prevent the dilution of tooth enamel according to the analyzed scientific literature.

Abstract: Objetivo: correlacionar los resultados de la prueba colorimétrica con la historia de caries de los pacientes adultos jóvenes, para determinar la posibilidad de usarla como indicador de la susceptibilidad del esmalte adulto a la disolución en ácidos, propios de la placa dental o de factores erosivos externos. Metodología: estudio analítico correlacional, determinación del tama o de la muestra con nivel de confianza del 95%, poder del 80%, razón 1:1, razón de riesgo 1:5. Muestra: 87 personas en el grupo con historia de caries y 83 en el de sanos, selección aleatoria de instituciones de educación para adultos de la ciudad de Manizales. Criterios de inclusión: tener entre 18 y 20 a os y dientes anteriores superiores. Se firmó el consentimiento informado. Aplicación de técnica colorimétrica en ambos grupos, se utilizaron discos de 2,8 mm de papel absorbente impregnados en una solución de cristal violeta; un ácido grabador (ácido clorhídrico a un pH de 1,9) y una escala colorimétrica de pH. Se aplicaron la prueba de Kappa, sensibilidad y especificidad. Resultados: resistente según la prueba: 55%, y no resistente: 45%. Según la prueba Kappa, la concordancia entre la prueba y la susceptibilidad del esmalte son bajas (IC: 0,59 - 1,47 Kappa 0,1). La sensibilidad (36%) y el valor predictivo positivo (40%) fueron bajos. La especificidad (45%) y el valor predictivo negativo (40%) también fueron bajos. Conclusiones: no hay concordancia entre la susceptibilidad a la disolución ácida del esmalte según la prueba utilizada en esta investigación y la experiencia pasada de caries en adultos jóvenes. Abstract: Objetivos Determinar el potencial erosivo de varias bebidas por medio de la determinación del pH y de su concentración de fosfatos y de fluoruros. Métodos Para el análisis, las bebidas se agruparon en gaseosas colas, gaseosas de naranja-lima-limón, gaseosas rojas, jugos de naranja, jugos de frutas, bebidas deportivas y bebidas con contenido de alcohol. Para medir el pH se utilizó un equipo calibrado y verificado. Las mediciones se realizaron por triplicado. La concentración de fosfatos se determinó por el método gravimétrico de molybdato de quinolina y la de flúor, mediante la utilización de un electrodo específico para el ión fluoruro. Resultados Las bebidas colas, una de las gaseosas de naranja-lima-limón y un jugo de naranja, registraron pH inferiores a 2,14. El contenido más alto de fosfato lo presentó el vino blanco (6,44 mmol/L). Las bebidas deportivas, dos de las bebidas de naranja, una de las cervezas, una de las gaseosas rojas, el vodka y el vino blanco, no registraron contenidos de fluoruros. Las demás estuvieron por debajo de 0,23 partes por millón de fluoruros. Conclusiones De acuerdo al pH las bebidas con posible potencial erosivo serian las gaseosas colas, las gaseosas de naranja-lima-limón, una de las gaseosas rojas, los jugos de naranja, los jugos de fruta y una de las cervezas. Ninguna de las bebidas registró una cantidad suficiente de fluoruros para reducir su potencial erosivo. Sólo tres bebidas, la cerveza, un jugo de naranja y el vino blanco, tenían valores de fosfatos que podrían prevenir en algo la disolución del esmalte según la referencia científica considerada. Abstract: Objetivo. caracterizar el consumo de medios masivos de comunicación en estudiantes universitarios de la ciudad de Manizales en el a o 2008, con el fin de generar programas de promoción y prevención que permitan mejorar los estilos de vida de los jóvenes. Metodología. estudio descriptivo, población 13.247 estudiantes. Muestreo probabilístico con nivel de confianza del 95% y margen de error del 5%. La muestra, 307 estudiantes. Resultados. el 53,4% lee revistas, el 58,3% diarios y periódicos, el 93% ve televisión, el 89,5% se conecta a Internet y el 67,4% escucha radio. Los temas que más han visto, leído o escuchado son violencia, entretenimiento y política. Los temas relacionados con salud que vieron, leyeron o escucharon recientemente son: maltrato infantil 68%, comer frutas 62% y uso del condón 58,9%. Las fuentes que generan mayor confianza para consultar sobre salud general son: médicos, familiares e Internet; y acerca de salud sexual son: médicos, amigos e Internet. Los amigos son la fuente de la que reciben más información sobre salud sexual, consumo de tabaco, psicoactivos, alcohol y alimentación; sobre salud oral es la familia. El 34,6% recuerda algún mensaje relacionado con salud y el 39,8% considera que no tienen efecto sobre su estilo de vida. Conclusiones. los estudiantes de salud y comunicación representan el grupo que más se expone a televisión, Internet, radio y prensa. Usan la información de los medios para entretenerse y acceder a temas de actualidad. La información relacionada con salud que más recuerdan tiene que ver con violencia, salud sexual y dieta saludable, ésta es usada en alguna medida para la modificación de estilos de vida. Abstract: Objetivo: analizar las características de salud pública de los estudiantes de una universidad privada de la ciudad de Manizales. Materiales y método: estudio descriptivo, muestreo probabilístico, nivel de confiabilidad del 95%, error del 4,5%, selección aleatoria y distribución proporcional. Tama o de muestra: 465 estudiantes. Análisis univariado y multivariado. Resultados: el 22% de los estudiantes consume cigarrillo sin diferencias por sexo. El análisis de conglomerados mostró dos grupos bien diferenciados. El primero caracterizado por ser hombres, tener la primera relación sexual a los 14 a os, con una amiga, después de salir semanas; estar en riesgo de alcoholismo, consumir psicoactivos diferentes al cigarrillo, practicar actividad física en el tiempo libre y tratar de ganar peso. El segundo conformado por mujeres, caracterizado por tener la primera relación sexual entre los 19 y 22 a os, con el novio, después de a os de relación, no estar en riesgo de alcoholismo, no consumir psicoactivos diferentes al cigarrillo, no practicar deporte en el tiempo libre y tratar de perder preso. Conclusiones: la frecuencia de uso de preservativo es alta y se utiliza con el doble propósito de prevenir ITS y embarazo. Porcentualmente es bajo el uso de sustancias psicoactivas ilícitas, pero por sus efectos sobre la salud es una prioridad que hay que intervenir. El consumo de cigarrillo y licor sigue ocupando el primer lugar entre los factores de riesgo para la salud. Aunque disponen de tiempo libre, solo la mitad lo utiliza en la realización de actividad física. Objetivos: analisar as características de saúde publica dos estudantes duma universidade privada da cidade de Manizales. Abstract: objective: to analyze the public health characteristics of students from a private university in manizales. materials and method: descriptive study with probabilistic sampling with a 95% reliability level and a 4.5% error margin, random selection and proportional distribution. sample size: 465 students. univariate and multivariate analysis was applied. results: 22% of the students smoke cigarettes despite their gender. the conglomerate analysis showed two well differentiated groups. the first group was characterized because its members were men, they had their first sexual intercourse at 14 with a friend after having dated for some weeks, they were in risk of alcoholism, they were consuming psychoactive drugs different from cigarettes, and they practiced physical activity in their free time and tried to gain weight. the second group was made up of women and it was characterized because the had their first sexual intercourse when they were 19 and 22 years old with their boyfriend, after some years of relationship, they were not in risk of alcoholism, they did not consume psychoactive drugs different from cigarettes, they did not practice any sport in their free time and tried to lose weight. conclusions: the frequency of condom use is high and it is used with the double purpose of preventing stds and pregnancy. the use of illicit psychoactive substances is statistically low, and, because of their effects on health, it is a priority to prevent abuse. cigarette and alcohol consumption is still the first place among the risk factors for health. even though they have much free time, only half of the students use this time to practice a physical activity.

Abstract: objective: the characterization of the use of mass media by university students in manizales during 2008, in order to generate programs of media promotion and prevention to help improve young people?s lifestyle. methodology: it is a descriptive study with a 13,247 student population. probability sampling with a confidence level of 95% and a 5% margin of error was used, involving 307 students. results: 53.4% of the students read magazines, 58.3% read newspapers and periodicals, 93% watch television, 89.5% surf the internet and 67.4% listen to the radio. the most viewed, read or listened to subjects involve violence, entertainment and politics. health related issues recently viewed, read about or listened to involved child abuse 68%, eating fruits 62% and use of condoms 58.9%. consulted sources that generated the greatest confidence on general health matters: doctors, family and the internet; on sexual health matters, sources that generated the greatest confidence were doctors, friends and the internet. friends were the most consulted sources on matters involving sexual health, tobacco use, psychoactive drugs, alcohol and food. the family was the most frequently consulted source concerning oral health. of the participants, 34.6% recalled accessing information related to health, of which 39.8% considered such information irrelevant to their lifestyle. conclusions: health and communication students represent the biggest group exposed to television, internet, radio and the press. they use such media information for entertainment and to be informed on current events. the health-related information they most recall involves violence, sexual health and healthy diets, which is, to some extent, used to modify their lifestyles.
