Abstract: the occurrence of green soybean seed due to forced maturation or premature plant death caused by drought or foliar and/or root diseases has been common in several brazilian production areas. physiological quality of seed lots with green seed may have their germination and vigor potentials affected and therefore discarded by the grain industry. the objective of this experiment was to determine the maximum tolerated level of green seed in soybean seed lots, which is information of major importance for seed producers when taking the decision whether to sell these lots. soybean seed of the cultivars cd 206, produced in ubirata, parana, and ?fmt tucunare,? produced in alto gar?as, mato grosso, were used in the study. green seed and yellow seed of both cultivars were mixed in the following proportions: 0%, 3%, 6%, 9%, 12%, 15%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 75% and 100%. seed quality was evaluated by the germination, accelerated aging, tetrazolium and electrical conductivity tests. the contents of a, b and total chlorophyll in the seed were also determined. a complete randomized block design in a factorial scheme (two cultivars x 12 levels of green seed) was used. seed quality was negatively affected and chlorophyll contents incremented with the increase in the percentage of green seed. seed germination, viability and vigor, measured by the accelerated aging test, were not reduced with levels of up to 3% green seed, for both cultivars. levels above 6% green seed significantly reduced the quality of the seed. the quality of seed lots with 9% or more green seed was significantly reduced to the point that their commercialization is not recommended.

Abstract: due to the conflicting results regarding the association between breast cancer and the gstm1 null mutation, our aim was to research this association in a brazilian population and correlations with smoking, reproductive history and several clinical pathologies. a case-control study was performed on 105 women with breast cancer and 278 controls. extraction of dna was accomplished according to the protocol of the gfx? kit and polymorphism analysis by the pcr technique. the control and experimental groups were compared and statistical analysis assessed by x2 or fisher's exact test. the deletion in the gstm1 gene in the breast cancer group had a prevalence of 32 (30.4%) individuals with the presence of null mutation. in the control group, the null mutation was present in 104 (37.4%) women. upon comparison of the two groups, no statistically significant difference of the gstm1 gene was observed, with an odds ratio (or) of 0.74, 95%, confidence interval (ci) 0.45 - 1.20, p = 0.277. the results conclusively show that single gene gstm1 polymorphisms do not confer a substantial risk of breast cancer to its carriers. furthermore, in this study no correlation was found between gsts and smoking, reproductive history and several clinical pathologies with respect to cancer risk.

Advances in Entomology (AE) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ae.2014.23021
Abstract: Wolbachia is a bacterium that infects many arthropods with horizontal or vertical transmission. The introduction and spreading of Solenopsis invicta in new areas may have influenced the acquisition of Wolbachia as this ant species spread from its South America origin to other parts of the globe. The wsp gene of Wolbachia was analyzed using the WSP Typing and a similarity analysis was conducted to analyse the sharing of the symbiont among nests of S. invicta ants. The analyses revealed the presence of two groups of Wolbachia: strain A belonging to InvA S. invicta subgroup, and the strain B belonging to Acromyrmex insinuator. The wsp gene and its hypervariable regions are shared among the Wolbachia present in different types of ants inhabiting in the New World. Wolbachia strains found in the nests of S. invicta are ant-specialist symbionts which may have spread by several means among the ant population.
Moretti, Thiago de C.;Ribeiro, Odair B.;
Neotropical Entomology , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1519-566X2006000300019
Abstract: the ecological position of the family formicidae in animal carcasses varies from predator, when feeding on eggs, larvae and pupae of some insects to necrophagous, when the ants feed on exudates or decomposing tissues. ants are present in human corpses subject to forensic analyses and can also be used in estimation of the post-mortem interval (pmi). cephalotes clypeatus fabricius is exclusively arboricolous and occurs only in the american continent. during a field study conducted in the campus of the universidade estadual de campinas, in december 2003, a laboratory mouse carcass weighing 35,9 g was placed in an iron-mesh cage, which was adequate to collect adult ants. the carcass decomposed in four days. the total of 82 specimens of c. clypeatus was collected, in the first two days of exposure. they were observed feeding on exudates, tissues of the carcass, and on diptera larvae occurring in the carcass. this species was observed nesting in hollow branches of senna multijuga (rich.) h.s. irwin & barneby (caesalpinaceae), which was found one-meter far from the cage. further investigation on the biology of this cephalotini must be performed, in order to understand the role of this species in the utilization of animal carcasses, and in the entomological succession process as well. this is the first report of c. clypeatus in animal carcasses.
