The Effect of Stocklength, Stock Diameter and Planting Angle on Early Establisment of Gliricidia sepium

Abstract: Legume tree crops, which establish easily and do not require extensive agronomic inputs, constitute potentially valuable sources of supplementary feeds that subsistence and medium-scale livestock farmers in the tropics could use to improve livestock nutrition and productivity. A field trial was conducted with Gliricidia sepium cuttings to investigate the effect if three stock lengths (20, 30 and 40 cm), two stock diameters (1.5-2.5) and (3.0-3.5 cm) and three planting angles (30° , 60° and 90°) in a factorial experiment. There were high significant differences (p<0.05) in all the growth parameters of the stock diameters and stock lengths used. The highest dry matter yield of 3.83, 4.61 and 4.65 t ha-1 were produced by stock length 20, 30 and 40 cm, respectively. The highest planting angle of 90° produced the tallest shoot height and biggest basal diameter, while the least planting angle of 30° produced the least shoot height and basal diameter, respectively. The interactions between the smaller stock diameter and the least planting angle (30° ) produced the least values of growth parameters. Gliricidia cuttings could be easily established with thicker stock diameter of not less than 3.0 and 40 cm stock length, planting in an angle between 60 and 90 degrees.
Effects of growth habits of legumes on weed population in grass/legume mixed swards

Abstract: grass-legume swards form the basis of many productive pasture systems. a study was carried out to evaluate their ability to smother weeds. a total of twelve treatments consisting of grass/ legume mixed swards were planted in july, 2004. soil analysis of the site was carried out prior to and after the study. some agronomic data like plant height, leaf number and population of weeds found in the plots were recorded using a meter square quadrat. there was a slight increase in the nitrogen content of the soil in 2005 after the study. the weed populations were highest during the first three weeks after planting. the weed population reduced drastically with increasing week. there were significant differences (p<0.05) in the population of the weeds in the mixed sward during the 2 year duration of this study. stylosanthes hamata recorded higher weed populations during the first year while a higher weeds population was recorded in the plots of tephrosia bracteolata during the second year.
Effectiveness of Base Plate Thickness Design Criteria in Steel Columns

Abstract: Steel column base plates are one of the most fundamental parts of a steel structure, yet the design of base plates is commonly not given the attention that it should. This result in base plate details that are expensive, difficult to fabricate and may even contribute to the hazards of the steel erection process by not providing stability for erection load applied to the column(s). The effective area method recommended in BS5950 has been used to study the effectiveness of base plate thickness under various loading conditions with due comparison to AISC provisions. Results indicate that although it is a semi-empirical method, it is more reliable than the empirical method recommended in BS5950; also the approach offers more economy and can be used for all column sections.
Reduction of the High Technical Power Losses Associated with the Nigerian 330KV Transmission Network

Abstract: This study carried out an in-depth study and analysis of power losses associated with the Nigerian 330 kV and proposed modifications to the existing network to improve the efficiency, reliability, security and ensure good quality power for the citizenry. The research methodology involved the power flow analysis of the existing network and subjecting it to contingency analysis and simulation using Newton-Raphson method in Power World Simulator (PWS) environment. The study revealed that the existing network cannot cope with contingencies leading to very low performance and even blackout at emergencies. The proposed modifications to the 330 kV transmission network which incorporated some additional lines to form more loops and minimal compensation, meet the acceptable voltage limits of 5%. It also reduces the energy losses from 337.5-189.9 MWH, representing 45% improvement over existing network and enhances reliability and security of the transmission grid.
Evaluation of Energy and Micronutrients Intake of Nigerian Adolescent Females: A Case Study of Institutionalized Secondary Schools in Akure South Local Government Area, Ondo State, Nigeria

Abstract: The objective of the study is to provide information on the energy and micronutrients intake of Nigerian adolescent females. A cross-sectional surrey was conducted among the 323 institutionalized adolescent females of 10-19 years age range in Akure South LGA, Ondo State. The energy and micronutrient intake were determined by weighing the food intake of the subjects and part of the food samples were subjected to chemical analysis The mean mineral intakes were: Ca 567 mg/kg, Mg 261 mg/kg, Zn 7.58mg/kg, Fe 19.8 mg/kg and P 136.8 mg/kg. And the vitamins intakes were vit. A 860 mg/kg, Thiamine 0.7 mg/kg, Riboflavin 0.28 mg/kg, Niacin 3.27 mg/kg, vit. C 9.1 mg/kg, Vit. D 2.14 mcg/kg Folic acid 9.8 mcg/kg and Vit. B12 1.2 mcg/kg, and the energy intakes was 6.45 MJ. The result showed that high proportion of the subjects were not meeting the RDA for energy and some of the micronutrients intake.

Multiple Reflections in Crystals: Natural and Faraday Optical Activity

Abstract: A previous analysis of the multiple reflections (MR) of light in crystals is extended to description of particular cases of natural and magnetooptic Faraday optical activity. The differences in manifestations of the MR in the latter effects are discussed and compared with the experimental results. In particular, the MR do not affect the optical rotation related to the natural gyration in case of a rigorously normal light incid-ence. The modifications of the transmittance fit-function of the known polarimetric HAUP technique imposed by the MR are specified. It is shown that the MR in crystals should produce a kind of spurious dichroism.
Protein Electrophoresis and DNA in Herbs Produced from Irradiated Ambrosia maritima Seeds Grown under Soil Salinity and Their Resistance to Insect

Abstract: Damsisa (Ambrosia maritima L.) is one of the wild plants present in Egypt and different African countries of the Nile Valley. It considered as potential source of molluscicides for treatment of infected sites. In this study, DNA amplifications technique and protein electrophoresis were used for the evaluation of response of Damsisa herbs to gamma rays (γ-rays), soil salinity and their interaction on alleviation of salt stress. This study also examined the effect of herb as bio-resistant for insect infestation in Phaseolus beans. Protein electrophoresis revealed that the number of protein bands separated from plants grown in saline soil not changed either grown from irradiated or un-irradiated seeds except 40 Gray (Gy) dose. Meanwhile, it was observed that mixing Damsisa herb with infested Phaseolus beans reduced insect ability to lays eggs or complete life cycle. Also, it was found that herbs produced from irradiated seeds and grown in normal or in saline soil were more effective in destruction of Callosobruchus maculatus insect and decreased the loss from infested beans.
The developmental features of leaflets of atrio-ventricular valves.

Abstract: The purpose of the study was to determine the features of structure and development of atrio-ventricular valves using the macro-micriscopic, histological and immunohystochemical methods (marker CD 34). The leaflets of the atrio-ventricular valves of 96 hearts of embryos, fetus and people of different age were used. It was determined that the primary valvular vehicle of heart starts to develop at the 7th week of prenatal ontogenesis. The mesenchyme of endocardial cushions and superior part of delamination plate of atrio-ventricular canal take part in the development of the leaflets of atrio-ventricular valves. The inferior part of delamination plate participates in the primary filaments of tendons of valvular vehicle and apex of the papillary muscle of ventricle. The onset of development of the structures participating in the fibrous ring takes place in the same time in the superior parts of delamination plate. The immunohystochemical study of leaflets of atrio-ventricular valves showed the maximal CD 34 level in the base of leaflets in hearts of all groups.
