Explicaciones alternativas a la precariedad del sector informal y algunas propuestas de solución
Cervantes Ni?o,José Juan;
Revista de Ciencias Sociales , 2009,
Abstract: contradicting the predominating explanations about precariousness in the informal sector, this article describes and examines some research that shows the presence of strata of benefited workers working in this sector. this reality is demonstrated in the context of an important metropolitan zone in mexico. proposals follow for implementing public policies from the viewpoint of non-precariousness in order to contribute to the solution or decrease of the problem of the informal sector.

Amar, Ali;Rapoport, Abr?o;Cervantes, Onivaldo;
Revista Brasileira de Otorrinolaringologia , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-72992004000100007
Abstract: aim: to assess the results of treatment of bilateral neck metastases in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of upper aerodigestive tract. study design: retrospective case-series. material and methods: the charts of 855 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of mouth, oropharynx, hypopharynx and larynx who underwent ressection of primary tumor and radical neck dissection were reviewed. ninety-six patients with histologically proven bilateral neck metastases were selected, 73 underwent bilateral radical neck dissection and 23 unilateral radical neck dissection and developed contralateral recurrence. the free disease survival and neck control rates were evaluated. results: between 23 patients who underwent unilateral neck dissection and developed contralateral recurrence, only 18 were salvaged. the neck control after 2 years was achieved in 46% of patients. between 73 patients who underwent bilateral neck dissection, 12 cases of neck recurrences were diagnosed and only 3 patients were salvaged. the neck control after 2 years was 77%, and the free disease survival was similar between the 2 groups, despite of the difference in neck control rates. conclusion: the bilateral neck dissection in one stage was more effective to control neck disease but no difference of disease-free survival in comparison with two stage procedure was observed. neck control was reached in most patients, but only 35% of those with bilateral metastases were free of disease after 2 years.

Gastric cardia adenocarcinoma in Taiwanese men: Positive associations due to selection bias
Diana Trevi?o Cervantes, Lori Ann Fischbach
World Journal of Gastroenterology , 2010,
Abstract: The factors associated with an increase in gastric cardia adenocarcinoma are poorly understood. Environmental factors such as Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and diet have been hypothesized to play a role in the recently increased risk of this disease, but additional studies are needed. In conducting studies to establish the relationship between potential risk factors and gastric cardia adenocarcinoma, it is necessary to carefully consider the role of bias. In a recently published study, the reported associations between H. pylori as well as post-meal physical exertion and gastric cardia adenocarcinoma may have been greatly influenced by selection bias.
Malnutrition and Gastrointestinal and Respiratory Infections in Children: A Public Health Problem
Leonor Rodríguez,Elsa Cervantes,Rocío Ortiz
International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health , 2011, DOI: 10.3390/ijerph8041174
Abstract: Infectious disease is the major cause of morbidity and mortality in developing countries, particularly in children. Increasing evidence suggests that protein-calorie malnutrition is the underlying reason for the increased susceptibility to infections observed in these areas. Moreover, certain infectious diseases also cause malnutrition, which can result in a vicious cycle. Malnutrition and bacterial gastrointestinal and respiratory infections represent a serious public health problem. The increased incidence and severity of infections in malnourished children is largely due to the deterioration of immune function; limited production and/or diminished functional capacity of all cellular components of the immune system have been reported in malnutrition. In this review, we analyze the cyclical relationship between malnutrition, immune response dysfunction, increased susceptibility to infectious disease, and metabolic responses that further alter nutritional status. The consequences of malnutrition are diverse and included: increased susceptibility to infection, impaired child development, increased mortality rate and individuals who come to function in suboptimal ways.

The coordination problem in an real time control algorithm of urban traffic
Silvia Galv?o de Souza Cervantes,Werner Kraus Junior
Semina : Ciências Exatas e Tecnológicas , 2005,
Abstract: The optimization of the signal control of the urban traffic in real time is presented, using depth search procedure in graphs. The traffic of vehicles model used for the prediction of future traffic behavior is described by means of state equations. The control method provides signal opening timings which result in the best possible performance for the transport system as well as a coordination of traffic flows between intersections. Performance is measured by the average delay of vehicles. The algorithm shows better performance when compared with a fixed time strategy with timings calculated by the TRANSYT program.
Increased myo-inositol in the posterior cingulate cortex in first-episode major depressive patients  [PDF]
Lily Magally Granados-Domínguez, Enrique O. Flores-Gutiérrez, Sarael Alcauter, Juan José Cervantes, Marina Torres-álvarez, María Corsi-Cabrera
Advances in Bioscience and Biotechnology (ABB) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/abb.2013.46A007
Abstract: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a severe, disabling pathology characterized, in addition to affective, cognitive and motor symptoms, by self-focused attention and rumination. During recursive self-focused processes and rumination, the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) is activated. In vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is a noninvasive imaging technique that can directly assess living biochemistry in localized brain regions. The aim of this study, therefore, was to use 1H-MRS as a means of analyzing brain metabolites in the PCC of a group of first-episode, unmedicated MDD patients. PCC metabolite levels were analyzed at 3-T in a single voxel located bilaterally over the PCC in 7 patients diagnosed for the first time with MDD and with no previous pharmacological treatment, as well as in 9 control subjects. Differences in metabolite levels between groups were compared using independent t-tests. Myo-inositol was significantly higher, and NAA + NAAG/Cr significantly lower, in MDD patients than in controls. The other brain metabolites showed no statistical differences. The present results suggest that alterations in PCC metabolite levels are likely involved in MDD pathophysiology, and may help to improve our understanding of MDD and the role of the PCC in some symptoms of depression.
La espiral del mestizaje
Cervantes,Guillermo;
Revista de Ciencias Sociales , 2009,
Abstract: this essay explores the role played by racial mixing as an instrument to forge a national identify in mexico, where what is indigenous coexists and fuses with the european in the pursuit and construction of something understood as purely mexican. starting with the colonial epoch in new spain, this study approaches the role conceded to mexican indigenous peoples and their slow inclusion in society through the adoption of practices considered western and civilized in detriment to the traditional indigenous practices, considered primitive and backward, as a means of assimilation; a phenomenon that later would have to propose the mestizo as a stereotype of mexican national identity during the nineteenth century; and that would culminate in its consolidation at the beginnings of the twentieth century. likewise, the perception of racial mixing is approached as a means for civilization in the idiosyncrasy of the mexican and the mexican-american to culminate with an evolution of the constant search for what is western, this time through assimilating the us way of life, as a continuation of the civilizing process understood as racial mixing.
