Evaluation of the MERIS aerosol product over land with AERONET

Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics Discussions , 2008,
Abstract: The Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) launched in February 2002 on-board the ENVISAT spacecraft is making global observations of top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiances. Aerosol optical properties are retrieved over land using Look-Up Table (LUT) based algorithm and surface reflectances in the blue and the red spectral regions. We compared instantaneous aerosol optical thicknesses retrieved by MERIS in the blue and the red at locations containing sites within the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET). Between 2002 and 2005, a set of 500 MERIS images were used in this study. The result shows that, over land, MERIS aerosol optical thicknesses are well retrieved in the blue and poorly retrieved in the red, leading to an underestimation of the Angstrom coefficient. Correlations are improved by applying a simple criterion to avoid scenes probably contaminated by thin clouds. To investigate the weakness of the MERIS algorithm, ground-based radiometer measurements have been used in order to retrieve new aerosol models, based on their Inherent Optical Properties (IOP). These new aerosol models slightly improve the correlation, but the main problem of the MERIS aerosol product over land can be attributed to the surface reflectance model in the red.

Abstract: Four microsatellite loci were used to achieve genetic characterization of six stocks from Litopenaeus vannamei used for aquaculture in Cuba: second generation from first introduction (S2-1), first generation from the second one (S1-2), from the third one (S1-3), and the fourth one (S1-4) and the crossings from two parental population: first generation from the first with first generation from the third (S1-1 × S1-3) and first generation from the second with first generation from the third (S1-2 × S1-3). 66% (16/24) of genetic systems in total loci were in genetic disequilibrium. The four microsatellite loci were polymorphic for all six stocks. Major quantities of allelic variants correspond to locus Pvan 1758, which is at the same time that one where there are private alleles from first generation of the third. All Fst comparisons were significant. This indicates big differences between stocks. The highest values are those in which there is presence of the second introduction. This introduction and its descendants are also more consanguineous. 1. Introduction In Latin America shrimp-producer countries, the Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, is the most representative species, with about 90% of production. Native from East Pacific, and from the tropical American continent, this species has shown an excellent culture adaptation and has been more resistant to salinity, oxygen, and temperature fluctuations. That is why, in the last twenty years, Litopenaeus vannamei, has been introduced in many culture programs, and nowadays it is the second culture after Penaeus monodon. In 2003 the first introduction of two stocks of White Pacific Shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, [1] was achieved in Cuba, imported from USA, Shrimp Improving System and so handling, nutrition, and health techniques are well established, as well as the assessment of genetic variation in farms that had before cultured the indigenous species Litopenaeus schmitti. In total, five stocks have been introduced, and all of them have been characterized using microsatellite techniques [2–4]. Genetic studies have a capital importance in shrimp industry, in order to determine genetic variability level either in natural or cultured populations, but mainly to know when the latter could be enriched with new specimens [5]. It is moreover important to know the structure of natural population from which those specimens will be taken [6] and also to have good markers that allow population and family studies. It is clear that the priority should be given to the domestication and handling of broodstocks
Stress Loops Effect in Ductile Failure of Mild Steel  [PDF]
O.O. Oluwole
Journal of Minerals and Materials Characterization and Engineering (JMMCE) , 2009, DOI: 10.4236/jmmce.2009.84026
Abstract: A simulation study of effect of stress on mild steel microstructure has revealed stress loops at areas of stress application which are believed to be the root cause of the ductile failure morphology (cup and cone) in ductile alloys under plane strain conditions. The areas of concentration of these stress loops were observed to be that of subsequent instability (or necking) observed in mild steel and other materials of low friction (flow) stress. Shear stress loops with angular bearing of 450 to the tensile axis were observed to instigate both the failure site and shear morphology in these materials. In plane stress conditions, shear was seen to be that of a wave shape running obliquely to area of stress application resulting in oblique necking observed in thin mild steel sheets.

Advances in Pure Mathematics (APM) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/apm.2015.514081
Abstract: The paper is devoted to obtaining the necessary and sufficient conditions of the solvability of weakly perturbed boundary-value problems for the nonlinear operator-differential Riccati equation in the Hilbert space on the interval and whole line with parameter ?. We find the solution of the given boundary value problem which for ε = 0 turns in one of the solutions of generating boundary value problem. Solution of the generating problem is constructed with the using generalized operator in analytical form. Iterative process for finding of solutions of weakly nonlinear equation with quadratic error is constructed.
Vertex-transitive maps on a torus

Abstract: We examine FVT (free, vertex transitive) actions of wallpaper groups on semiregular tilings. By taking quotients by lattices we then obtain various families of FVT maps on a torus, and describe the presentations of groups acting on the torus. Altogether there are 29 families, 5 arising from the orientation preserving wallpaper groups and 2 from each of the remaining wallpaper groups. We prove that all vertex-transitive maps on torus admit an FVT map structure.
