Almeida,Ana Nunes de; Alves,Nuno de Almeida; Delicado,Ana;
Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas , 2011,
Abstract: on the basis of a questionnaire survey carried out among portuguese children, this article aims to characterise their possession and usage of the internet. the survey ascertained that the children can be grouped under four distinct user profiles - ?confirmed cybernauts?, ?applied students?, ?inveterate gamers? and ?beginners? - and demonstrates that these profiles are highly conditioned by variables such as a child?s sex and age and his or her parents? educational levels and socio-professional categories. these profiles also correspond to different forms of parental mediation and different representations regarding the internet.

This article identifies a broad range of internet user profiles, which are relevant for an understanding of the social use of information technology. These profiles reflect particular forms of linkage between individuals' social positions and how they use the internet.

OBJECTIVE: Given the inaccessibility of indirect calorimetry, intensive care units generally use predictive equations or recommendations that are established by international societies to determine energy expenditure. The aim of the present study was to compare the energy expenditure of critically ill patients, as determined using indirect calorimetry, to the values obtained using the Harris-Benedict equation. METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted at the Intensive Care Unit 1 of the Centro Hospitalar do Porto. The energy requirements of hospitalized critically ill patients as determined using indirect calorimetry were assessed between January 2003 and April 2012. The accuracy (± 10% difference between the measured and estimated values), the mean differences and the limits of agreement were determined for the studied equations. RESULTS: Eighty-five patients were assessed using 288 indirect c
Vaz,Raquel Almeida; Nodin,Nuno;
Análise Psicológica , 2005,
Abstract: the aim of this work is to study the influence that physical exercise may have upon the sexuality of elderly people. the sample is composed of 54 married subjects, with an age range of 65-75 years. it was divided into two groups, one of which consists of 27 subjects who regularly exercise, the other consisting of 27 subjects who do not exercise. a questionnaire about sexuality after the age of 65 was used as our instrument, after some adjustments. the non-exercising subjects were interviewed individually in a room at their respective day care centers, with the questionnaires being filled by the interviewer. the remaining subjects filled their own enquiries, which were handed at their gymnasiums along with filling instructions. the investigation was designed as an observational-descriptive study of inter-group comparison, and the results were analyzed using the mann-whitney (ordinal level answer options) and qui-square (nominal level answer options) tests. the results showed statistically relevant differences between the two samples on some of the studied dimensions, namely the sexual initiative, the mean frequency of sexual intercourse, the interest in sex life, the perceived changes of the couple?s mutual activities/ /amusements, the sensations obtained through sexual intercourse and the factors the subjects consider influence sex life. on this sample, on a general level, it was observed that exercising subjects are sexually more active than non-exercising subjects and a relation was established between the practice of physical exercise and some dimensions of elderly sexuality.

Abstract: the main aims of this study were i) to perform a kinematic characterization of sub and maximal swimming speed; ii) to investigate the associations between the kinematic profiles and the 200 m front crawl style. nine national level male swimmers performed two speed tests: a submaximal discontinuous speed trial of progressive speed intensity, and a maximal one, simulating a 200 m front crawl style. the stroke general kinematic parameters, the phases duration of the stroke cycle, the velocity of the centre of mass and the intra cyclic variation of the horizontal velocity were herein studied. significant kinematic differences in relation to stroke rate, horizontal velocity of the centre of mass, total cycle duration, absolute and relative duration of the propulsive sub aquatic action and the velocity of the centre of mass during the arms recovery were compared between the speed tests. significant correlations between the performance in the maximal speed and some kinematic variables were observed.
