Revista da Faculdade de Letras : Sociologia , 2004,
Abstract: The problem with the work transition, on behalf of the graduated from college, has been acquiring in Portugal in the last decade an increasing scientific eyeshot. The Unemployment questions, which were until now preponderantly linked with those without any kind of graduation, widen, reaching nowadays and in a miscellaneous manner the whole population, mainly the youngest. Consequently, it loses each time more congruity to mention groups which are the most propense or not to Unemployment, the truth points out to a growing dissimilarity in the composition of those struch by it. It will be sought not only to analyse how the professional integration unfolded and the matching professional pathways of the graduated but also to verify how the access to this degree led to mutations concerning the social and geographical mobility, taking on consideration the specific geographical framing which characterized the focused object of study. The performances and expectations concerning the obtained studies as well as the job followed at that time were also disquiet concerning this inquiry.

Abstract: The increasing difficulty of graduates of higher education to access to employment is a reflection of changes in the supply of skilled labor as a result of the expansion of higher education and the mutability characteristics of the labor market. Investment in education and obtain higher education degrees are thus, increasingly, a position of risk, a priori, does not guarantee access to employment. This question can be posed only in terms of access to employment, but also at the real increase in job insecurity, especially visible in the gradual depreciation of young graduates, especially in the exercise of their first job. This article, part of the analysis of the process of transition to employment of graduates in 2005/06 Higher Polytechnic Institute of Viseu, their present course of 18 months after graduation from university. Meanwhile, the geographic scope of this institution of higher education, taking into account the national reality, is as an opportunity to verify their role in the process of local development, with the ability to attract and retain a labor ‘young and skilled work at the regional level.
Acesso e exercício do primeiro emprego dos diplomados do ISPV

International Journal on Working Conditions , 2011,
Efficient Hybrid DCT-Domain Algorithm for Video Spatial Downscaling
Roma Nuno,Sousa Leonel
EURASIP Journal on Advances in Signal Processing , 2007,
Abstract: A highly efficient video downscaling algorithm for any arbitrary integer scaling factor performed in a hybrid pixel transform domain is proposed. This algorithm receives the encoded DCT coefficient blocks of the input video sequence and efficiently computes the DCT coefficients of the scaled video stream. The involved steps are properly tailored so that all operations are performed using the encoding standard block structure, independently of the adopted scaling factor. As a result, the proposed algorithm offers a significant optimization of the computational cost without compromising the output video quality, by taking into account the scaling mechanism and by restricting the involved operations in order to avoid useless computations. In order to meet any system needs, an optional and possible combination of the presented algorithm with high-order AC frequency DCT coefficients discarding techniques is also proposed, providing a flexible and often required complexity scalability feature and giving rise to an adaptable tradeoff between the involved scalable computational cost and the resulting video quality and bit rate. Experimental results have shown that the proposed algorithm provides significant advantages over the usual DCT decimation approaches, both in terms of the involved computational cost, the output video quality, and the resulting bit rate. Such advantages are even more significant for scaling factors other than integer powers of 2 and may lead to quite high PSNR gains.

Edifício da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto. O conceito e a forma.
Nuno Jennings Tasso de Sousa
Revista da Faculdade de Letras : Historia , 2011,
Abstract: After a small note concerning the past of the Humanities Faculty of Porto University, follows a description of the area where the actual building is situated and the main features of the program. Then, are presented the concepts that underlie through the design proceadures. Finally, are accounted several events that interfered in the development of the project and irremediably damaged the relathionship with the other faculties located nearby. This campus that was meant to be appealing, favourable to meditation and to encourage exchange of informatiom between the various lines of knowledge, became all mixed-up, self centred and entangled in a vast road junction, with almost irreversible dramatic results.

Epigenetic (de)regulation of adult hippocampal neurogenesis: implications for depression
António Mateus-Pinheiro, Luísa Pinto, Nuno Sousa
Clinical Epigenetics , 2011, DOI: 10.1186/1868-7083-3-5
Abstract: Here, we outline some of the major epigenetic mechanisms contributing to the regulation of hippocampal neurogenesis and discuss several lines of evidence supporting their involvement on the development of imbalances in the neurogenic process, often correlated to behavioural and cognitive deficits commonly observed in major depressive disorder. The beauty of research is that it ultimately defeats all established dogmas, even though some take very long to fall. Cajal's decree concerning the immutability of the central nervous system (CNS) has been reviewed and updated during the last decades, due to mounting evidence that substantiates the regenerative potential and plasticity of the CNS. Despite the initial reluctance manifested towards the first reports of post-natal neurogenesis, it is now well established that neurogenesis, a process that comprises the generation, differentiation and integration of new neurons in the preexisting brain neuronal networks, occurs in the adult brain, prevailing throughout life in specific brain areas, where neurons are persistently generated [1,2]. Such spatially defined brain regions where neurogenesis occurs display a permissive microenvironment for the maintenance and differentiation of neural stem cells and to their proliferation. Currently, two neurogenic brain regions are broadly recognized in the mammalian adult brain: the subgranular zone (SGZ) of the hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG) and the subependymal zone (SEZ) in the lateral ventricles. In the hippocampal formation, the precursor cell population resides throughout the SGZ, with specific gradients [3]. After being generated in the SGZ, newly-born cells become committed to a neuronal lineage and migrate into the granule cell layer (GCL), where they mature to become excitatory glutamatergic granule neurons [4,5]. In the SEZ the precursor cells are mostly found in the anterior segment of the walls of the lateral ventricles. Here, newly-born precursor cells generate neuroblasts th
Otter Conservation in Portugal: Distribution and Status of Lutra lutra in Five Protected Areas of the Country

IUCN Otter Specialist Group Bulletin , 1995,
Abstract: Although otter (Lutra lutra L.) populations presents a tendency towards regression in much of its european range, portugal still has a fairly stable population. Nevertheless, the exact status of the species is unknown. In this context, it is actually in course the project Otter Conservation in Portugal, insert in a national program for the Knowledge and Managment for the Natural Heritage, cofinanced by LIFE PROGRAM (EC). In this paper are presented the studies carried out in five protected areas of the country: Montesinho and Serra da Estrela Natural Parks, and Serra da Malcata, Paul do Boquilobo and Sado Estuary Natural Reserves, which included habitats as different as rivers, upland oligotrophic streams, dams, lagoons, marshes, lowland rivers and fishfarm ponds. First data concerning the distribution of the otter in that areas, the main threats observed in the areas, and some measures that can be implemented to improve the habitat conditions and the situation of the otter in some disturbed areas, are presented. The last two areas (Paul do Boquilobo and Sado Estuary) have the most acute problems for conservation, mainly due to intensive agriculture, and to domestic and industrial pollution in the freshwater and estuarine systems. The first three areas have good conditions to the existence of the species, not only in terms of habitat suitability (adequate presence of vegetation, water and preys), but also because of the relative reduced human disturbance.
