A Land Use Planning Ontology: LBCS
Nuno Montenegro,Jorge C. Gomes,Paulo Urbano,José P. Duarte
Future Internet , 2012, DOI: 10.3390/fi4010065
Abstract: Urban planning has a considerable impact on the economic performance of cities and on the quality of life of their populations. Efficiency at this level has been hampered by the lack of integrated tools to adequately describe urban space in order to formulate appropriate design solutions. This paper describes an ontology called LBCS-OWL2 specifically developed to overcome this flaw, based on the Land Based Classification Standards (LBCS), a comprehensive and detailed land use standard to describe the different dimensions of urban space. The goal is to provide semantic and computer-readable land use descriptions of geo-referenced spatial data. This will help to make programming strategies available to those involved in the urban development process. There are several advantages to transferring a land use standard to an OWL2 land use ontology: it is modular, it can be shared and reused, it can be extended and data consistency maintained, and it is ready for integration, thereby supporting the interoperability of different urban planning applications. This standard is used as a basic structure for the “City Information Modelling” (CIM) model developed within a larger research project called City Induction, which aims to develop a tool for urban planning and design.
Gravidez ectópica n?o rota: diagnóstico e tratamento. Situa??o atual
Elito Junior, Julio;Montenegro, Nuno Aires Mota de Mendon?a;Soares, Roberto da Costa;Camano, Luiz;
Revista Brasileira de Ginecologia e Obstetrícia , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-72032008000300008
Abstract: it is advisable to do the non-invasive diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy precociously, before there is the tube rupture, combining for that the transvaginal ultrasonography with the dosage of the b-fraction of the chorionic gonadotrophin. a range of treatment options may be used. either a surgical intervention or a clinical treatment may be taken into consideration. laparotomy is indicated in cases of hemodynamic instability. laparoscopy is the preferential route for the treatment of tube pregnancy. salpingectomy should be performed in patients having the desired number of children, while salpingostomy should be indicated in patients willing to have more children, when the b-hcg titers are under 5,000 mui/ml and the surgical conditions are favorable. the use of methotrexate (mtx) is a consecrated clinical procedure and should be indicated as the first option of treatment. the main criteria for mtx indication are hemodynamic stability, b-hcg <5,000 mui/ml, anexial mass <3,5 cm, and no alive embryo. it is preferable a single intramuscular dose of 50 mg/m2, because it is easier, more practical and with less side effects. protocol with multiple doses should be restricted for the cases with atypical localization (interstitial, cervical, caesarean section scar and ovarian) with values of b-hcg >5,000 mui/ml and no alive embryo. indication for local treatment with an injection of mtx (1 mg/kg) guided by transvaginal ultrasonography should occur in cases of alive embryos, but with an atypical localization. an expectant conduct should be indicated in cases of decrease in the b-hcg titers within 48 hous before the treatment, and when the initial titers are under 1,500 mui/ml. there are controversies between salpingectomy and salpingostomy, concerning the reproductive future. till we reach an agreement in the literature, the advice to patients who are looking forward to a future gestation, is to choose either surgical or clinical conservative conducts.
Problemas e desafios no exercício da actividade docente: Um estudo sobre o stresse, "burnout", saúde física e satisfa??o profissional em professores do 3o ciclo e ensino secundário
Gomes,A. Rui; Silva,Maria Jo?o; Mourisco,Salomé; Silva,Susana; Mota,Alfredo; Montenegro,Nuno;
Revista Portuguesa de Educa??o , 2006,
Abstract: this work presents the data of a study with 127 teachers of a secondary school in porto district, on which different indicators related to work and personal well-being were evaluated (stress, burnout, physical health and professional fulfilment). the results revealed very significant levels of occupational stress (percentages above 30%), 13% burnout prevalence and various physical health problems. women showed more stress associated with time-limit pressure and amount of work, more complains about clerical work and higher levels of emotional exhaustion and physical problems. as for men, higher tendency for depersonalization was shown. in what concerns professional experience, teachers with more years of practice showed more problems confronting: students' disciplinary issues, students' different capacity levels, clerical work, and excessive amount of classes. finally, teachers with more hours of contact with students assumed less depersonalization and more stress related to students` indiscipline and to the teachers` career statutes.

Abstract: the smith-lemli-opitz syndrome (slo) is an autosomal recessive polimalformative metabolic syndrome, characterized by a recognizable pattern of minor facial anomalies, congenital anomalies of many organs, failure to thrive, and mental retardation. it is caused by a defect in the enzyme 7-dehydrocholesterol reductase, which is responsible for the last step of cholesterol biosynthesis pathway. the smith-lemli-opitz syndrome is characterized by low plasma cholesterol levels and elevated concentrations of the cholesterol precursor 7-dehydrocholesterol. we report on a pregnancy with a positive integrated prenatal screening test for down?s syndrome, with unusually low maternal serum levels of unconjugated oestriol (ue3). an increased nuchal translucency was noted in the 11 weeks? scan. the fetal karyotype revealed a normal 46,xy karyotype. detailed ultrasound scan at 18 weeks revealed ambiguous genitalia, short femur length, cleft lip heart defect and intrauterine growth retardation. based on these findings and the maternal serum levels of ue3 prenatal diagnosis, slo was suspected and later confirmed by the demonstration of low levels of cholesterol and high levels of 7-dehydrocholesterol and 8-dehydrocholesterol in a stored frozen sample of amniotic fluid. pregnancy was terminated at 20 weeks and the mutational analysis of dhcr7 gene on dna obtained from foetal tissues revealed homozygosity for the common caucasian mutation ivs81g>c associated with slo severe phenotypes. the state of the art on prenatal diagnosis of smith-lemli-opitz syndrome is reviewed.
Stress ocupacional no ensino: um estudo com professores dos 3o ciclo e ensino secundário
Gomes, A. Rui;Montenegro, Nuno;Peixoto, Ana Maria Baptista da Costa;Peixoto, Ana Rita Baptista da Costa;
Psicologia & Sociedade , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-71822010000300019
Abstract: this work was done with 689 portuguese high school teachers. we evaluated the stress, burnout, physical health and professional fulfilment. the results revealed very significant levels of occupational stress (percentages near 40%), a different frequency of burnout in the three appraised dimensions (10% in emotional exhaustion, 3% in reduced personal accomplishment and 1% in depersonalization), various physical health problems and values of professional dissatisfaction close to 20%. multiple regression analysis pointed different predictors' variables for the three dimensions of burnout (more than 60% of explained variance for emotional exhaustion, 16% for personal accomplishment and 13% for depersonalization). the discriminant analysis and "t-test" for independent samples allowed us to verify more occupational problems (in different variables) in the following groups: women, older teachers, professionals with more precarious contracts, teachers working more hours per week and teachers with more students in the classroom. limitations and implications of the present study are discussed.
Paleogeography and Sequence Stratigraphy in Dariyan Carbonate Reservoir, NE Shiraz  [PDF]
Amir Karimian Torghabeh, Nuno Pimentel
Open Journal of Geology (OJG) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ojg.2016.611101
Abstract: Zagros Basin is a very important hydrocarbon region in the Iran and World. One of the major reservoirs in this basin is the Lower Cretaceous Dariyan Formation. Based on petrographic studies, 9 microfacies were determined and interpreted as related to lagoon, barrier island and open marine environments. Facies associations show deposition in a carbonate ramp. Sequence stratigraphy studies show two sequences, each one with a transgressive system tract, marked by open marine microfacies, and then a retrogradational highstand, marked by barrier and lagoonal facies. Paleogeography and sequence stratigraphy studies of this formation and correlation of it with other sections may provide useful information about reservoir characterizations.
Epidemiological studies are like cherries, one draws another
Lunet,Nuno;
Gaceta Sanitaria , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0213-91112009000500021
Abstract: the proverb "words are like cherries", meaning that when you start talking subjects pop up and you end up with long conversations, just like cherries coming out of the plate in chains when you pick one, may also be applied to epidemiological research. a sequence of epidemiological studies, each being drawn from the previous, is presented as an example of how each investigation may raise new questions to be addressed in following studies. this description stresses the need for appropriate planning and the usefulness of pilot testing to depict inadequacies that can hardly be anticipated without field work. i intend to illustrate how epidemiological research can provide a deep approach to research questions, as long as findings are properly interpreted and suboptimal methodological options are taken into account in future investigations.
Os usos da narrativa futebolística portuguesa em Maputo
Domingos,Nuno;
Etnográfica , 2012,
Abstract: this article researches the social uses in maputo of what is here called the “narrative of portuguese football”. the relation between the portuguese populations in the capital of mozambique with this narrative will be interpreted as a critical exam of the connection made between football as a particular consumption, taken as a characteristic of the national culture, and the existence of a portuguese community. represented as a homogenised whole this community reifies the logic of a national history. in maputo’s case, however, the study of portuguese football allows not only to -confront the homogenising discourse on national communities but also to question that transnational community called lusophone, which gathers a group of countries supposedly united by a cultural heritage.
A vida sexual dos anúncios pessoais: Uma revis?o da literatura
Nodin,Nuno;
Análise Psicológica , 2007,
Abstract: the current review covers the scientific literature that uses personal advertisements published in the press, on the internet and in other media as a source of data. the reviewed studies can be separated into three non-discreet categories: (1) the analysis of courtship patters in men and women, (2) the analysis of gender and sexuality patterns in their relation with sexual orientation, and (3) the analysis of hiv sexual risk and protective behaviours, in particular among gay men. advantages and limitations of the use of personal ads within the context of scientific research are discussed, as well as the impact of increased popularity of the internet upon this phenomenon.
A depress?o nas perturba??es da alimenta??o
Nodin,Nuno;
Análise Psicológica , 1999,
Abstract: the relationship between eating disorders, like anorexia and bulimia, and depression are known, although not much discussed in the literature. this article presents a review of the literature concerning the relationship between those two eating disorders and depressive symptoms. the available information and the different explanative hypotheses concerning this subject are discussed. particular attention is given to the addictive hypothesis, according to which anorexia and bulimia are considered the reflection of a dependency problem that is also the cause of depression.
