Abstract: this study mapped and described 11 harm reduction interventions/programs in greater metropolitan porto alegre, rio grande do sul state, brazil, in 2004-2006. mapping was based on interviews and analysis of available documents and comparison with a previous study with data from 2003. we aimed to discuss the programs' sustainability (political, financial, and administrative) and operational characteristics, based on the following categories: type of links in the program or intervention; forms of inclusion in the municipalities; background, financing; typical activities; team hiring practices; volunteer work, if any; resources (human and financial); partnerships; municipal legislation, if any; and participation in forums for political representation. despite the diversity of links and organizational formats, there were some common characteristics: precarious professional status; dependence on volunteer work to implement activities; influence of turnover in municipal and state administration on the continuity of projects and partnerships, as well as on the maintenance of human and financial resources. we conclude that such factors lead to lack of continuity in the services provided to the target population.
Nardi, Henrique Caetano;Rigoni, Rafaela de Quadros;
Psicologia em Estudo , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-73722005000200014
Abstract: scientific literature review shows that harm reduction (hr) articles focus mainly the discussion about the implications of different drug users treatment models and the efficiency of hr with injection drug users. however, there are few studies about hr workers. in this context, the present article aims to discuss the work of outreachworkers, proposing an analysis of how the discursive formations about drugs and aids, in contemporary society, influence the work and the subjectivity of the outreachworkers, as well as the possibilities of having "sustainable projects" as a way to include harm reduction practices in public health services.

Abstract Through the discovery and disclosure of documents in 1977, Sabina Spielrein arises from a long period of oblivion to now be recognized as one of the pillars of the emergence and spread of psychoanalysis in Europe. Her full of drama and overcoming life story overlaps the theoretical legacy that Spielrein provided to psychoanalytic community. Her main legacy to Freud s theory and technique was her prepositions about what later came to be conceptualized as the death drive Spielrein was also responsible for major theories about the understanding of children s language development. The aim of this paper is to review her life story and provide a discussion about her linguistics theory, which has only been discovered years after her death.
Estrutura populacional e distribui??o espacial de Miconia prasina D.C. (Melastomataceae) em duas áreas de Floresta Atlantica na Ilha Grande, RJ, Sudeste do Brasil
Antonini, Rafaela Dias;Nunes-Freitas, André Felippe;
Acta Botanica Brasilica , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-33062004000300024
Abstract: the aim of this study was to identify the spatial distribution pattern and the populational structure of miconia prasina d.c. in two atlantic forest areas at ilha grande, rj. the area i (ai) is a secondary forest near 30 years of regeneration, and area ii (aii) is a primary forest with few evidences of anthropic action. on each area, 40 plots (25m2) were established, where the number of individuals, height and the bhd of each individual were recorded. the pattern of spatial distribution was determined using the morisita's dispersion index (id). possible differences on abundance, bhd and height between the two populations were tested using student's t test. the morisita's index value was 1.91 in ai and 3.32 in aii, indicating a clumped distribution pattern on both areas. there was no significant difference in abundance between populations. bhd and tree height differed significantly between populations, with aii presenting lower mean values than ai. data suggest that the ai population is on a more advanced level of habitat occupation than aii, since it has greater mean values of bhd and height.

Abstract: Obesity is a disease of epidemic proportions, associated with chronic inflammation in response to increased secretion of inflammatory cytokines originating in adipose tissue. Exercise has been shown to be effective in combating these changes. The aim of this study was to review the anti-inflammatory effect of physical exercise in the pathogenesis of obesity. We conducted a search of the terms “exercise”, “obesity” and “inflammation” on Medline and PubMed databases, restricting results to clinical trials published since 2011. The retrieved studies showed that physical exercise could, via different pathways, reduce levels of CRP, IL-6 and TNF-α, as well as other proinflammatory markers. Additionally, exercise was able to increase expression of genes related to the production of nitric oxide, positively modulating endothelial function and chronic inflammation in obese patients, with or without caloric restriction. In conclusion, aerobic exercise of moderate intensity is an effective intervention strategy for chronic inflammation associated with obesity.

Duarte, Silvana;Caetano, Carla de Brito;Vicentini, Rafaela Nascimento;Araújo, Francisco Gerson;
Revista Brasileira de Zoologia , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-81752002000300029
Abstract: the catfish trachelyopterus striatulus steindachner, 1877 is a very abundant fish species in reservoirs in southeast brazil, and its relative abundance seems to be increasing in several lentic environments. despite of being a very common species, few information is available on its distribution and other aspects of ecology. the lajes reservoir (22o42'-22o50's e 43o53'-44o05'w) is the largest manmade lake for hydropower purposes in rio de janeiro state, where this species rank among the top abundant fishes, both in number and in biomass. its relative abundance were compared in three zones of the reservoir (upper, central and lower), based on a standardized program, during three annual periods (monthly sampling in 1994 and bi-monthly sampling in 1996 and 1997), with a total of three hundred twenty samples, using gill nets. environmental variables of water temperature, ph and transparency were taken in each sampling occasion, and information on rainfall and level of the water were recorded. trachelyopterus striatulus showed an increasing abundance during the study period, rising from fifty rank in 1994 to the most abundant fish in 1997, coinciding with decreasing water level, and suggesting that this species take advantage of the harsh conditions in the reservoir to increase population. highest number and weight were recorded in the upper zone, which presented the lowest transparency. seasonally no significance (p > 0,05) difference in abundance was found over the whole period.

Abstract: In order to treat hyperpigmentation-related problems, there has been a global trend in developing cosmetics claiming to have skin-whitening properties, which act by inhibiting melanin biosynthesis. The objective of this work was to evaluate the in vitro mushroom tyrosinase inhibitory activity of five Amazonian native flora oils, and so to verify the possibility of their incorporation into cosmetic products. In addition, the fatty acid composition of the essential oils was determined by gas chromatography-flame ionisation detection in order to determine the main components of these oils. The tyrosinase inhibitory activity of the tested oils was found to be in the following order: a aí (IA50 = 66.08 μg mL-1) > tucum > patauá > pracaxi > castanha do Brasil. This study suggests that a aí oil has great potential in the treatment of hyperpigmentation and other related disorders, due to its considerable tyrosinase inhibitory activity.
