Avances en Psicología Latinoamericana , 2012,
Abstract: a multiple case study design was applied to data collected through ecological engagement in developmental contexts of adolescents in socially vulnerable situations. four adolescents were selected from a larger study of 98 brazilian adolescents in two distinct groups (g1 - youth in street situations and g2 - impoverished youth living with their families). the selected adolescents had the highest and lowest adjustment scores in their respective groups. quantitative data and observational field notes were used to describe the four youth on indicators of adjustment and risk and protective factors. results indicated points of convergence and divergence between the cases and the existence of a continuum of social vulnerability that was strongly related to how risk and protective factors interact in the life of each adolescent, rather than being strongly related to living situation (street or families).

Universitas Psychologica , 2012,

Abstract: the aim of this theoretical review was to articulate the resilience concept with key aspects in the lives of people living with hiv/aids. we emphasize the analysis of protective factors traditionally related to resilience (personal characteristics and social and affective support networks). the reviewed studies show important protective factors that contribute to the health and well-being of people with hiv/aids, such as cognitive coping and acceptance of their hiv status, family participation in treatment and family support, the role of governmental and nongovernmental institutions, and religious beliefs. the concept of resilience defined as a dynamic process that allows human beings to overcome adversities is essential for understanding hiv infection and treatment of aids patients. it helps decrease stigmatization and prejudice towards the disease and patients. it also helps alter the notion that living with aids is incompatible with well-being and quality of life and fosters the creation of new hiv/aids prevention and treatment perspectives.

Abstract: this work investigates the positive and negative aspects of the experience of living in a boarding school to the psychological development of students, the influences of the collective experience on the school performance and the conception of an ideal boarding school. five semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15-22 year-old students. data was analyzed through content analysis. both positive and negative aspects of the boarding school experience were pointed out from the group-gathering category (possibility of making new friends versus fights and arguments). the limitations of the boarding school concerning facilities and physical structure, as well as the stressful routine, were the main implications of the collective experience on the school performance. the interns' concept of an ideal boarding school depended on facilities and structure improvements, and on the quality of the relationships. the results are important to educative context comprehension's that received little attention in the literatura.

Universitas Psychologica , 2008,
Abstract: the aim of this study is to explore the relation of positive family climate, well-being at school and religiosity/spirituality between brazilian youth groups of smokers and non-smokers. a non-random sample of 1.232 participants (631 males and 601 females) completed the questionnaire of this study. ages ranged from 14 to 18 years (mean=15.68; sd=1.26). smokers had significantly less positive family climate and well-being in school than the non-smoking youth. regression analysis showed that all psychological characteristics act as protective factors for the smoking behavior among girls. on the other side, high well-being in school and attending school during the day can work as protective factors for boys. these findings can be important in the elaboration of public politics to reduce tobacco consumption.

Psicologia: Teoria e Pesquisa , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-37722007000300004
Abstract: this article aims at understanding the reasons for children and adolescents' commercial sexual exploitation by the perception of brazilian truck drivers, both clients and non clients of this service. based on a questionnaire, interviews were made with 239 truck drivers in different regions in brazil. the answers were categorized and analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency and mean). the main reasons stressed were the social and economic inequality, the strong male chauvinist culture and the drivers' ideas about adulthood as well as the tendency to feel not responsible for the children and adolescents abused and the poor knowledge and consideration for the rights and development characteristics of this population. we may conclude emphasizing the importance of studies which stress the abuser perspective. they may contribute to better understand the economic, social, cultural and political realities involved both in the formation of the demand as well as of the offer of sexual commerce. based on this information, it could be possible to elaborate more efficient projects to confront this problem.
