Hoppen, Norberto;
Revista de Administra??o Contemporanea , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-65551998000300009
Abstract: an evaluation of the state of the art in the information systems domain, in brazil, is presented in this article. the assessment was obtained by the analysis of 163 articles published between january 1990 and september 1997 in the most important scientific journals in administration. the analysis was based on the classification of the subjects, developed in the articles, on the research strategies and methodologies adopted in the empirical researches and on the assessment of the scientific quality of the articles. the results showed that (1) there is a strong proportion of theoretical essays published (41% in the period 1990-7 and 34% in the period 1996-7), (2) the most important subjects studied by the authors are development and use of is in brazil, (3) qualitative research (cases studies) and survey are the more frequently adopted research methodologies (in 72% of the empirical studies), and (4) the scientific quality of the articles is low. because the link between theory and the operationalization of the variables is not elicited, the methodological procedures are incompletely described, and the research instruments are not validated.

Abstract: strategic alignment, combined to strategic planning, is an important management tool. for this reason new approaches to strategic alignment promotion could help high-level management decisions and affect the organizational performance. this study of exploratory nature aims to develop an operational model of strategic alignment between business strategies and goals and information technology strategies and goals. to this model converge elements from classical strategic alignment models, studies about methodologies of strategic planning implementation, methodologies of integrated information systems implementation and findings from multiple case studies. the main results show that organizations always promote strategic alignment, with more or less intensity, even in an empirical and partial way. the most important alignment promoters to the implementation phase of strategic planning are the elements methodology and management tools, which can influence the commitment of the personnel involved in the planning process and positively affect achievement of goals.

Abstract: information is one of the knowledge workers′ main resources in problem solving. however, the nature of information use is not well known in this environment. securities analysts are knowledge workers that use and produce information to evaluate companies and industry sectors to identify good investment opportunities. capital market literature has been emphasizing the importance in using available information to identify opportunities, to give appropriate investment recommendations and then to get return of investment. it is an approach that does not make evident the information process - acquisition, processing, interpretation, and integration - to identify a good investment. there is a gap that suggests an investigation to know that process. the purpose of this article is to perform a qualitative exploratory research to map the information use process by securities analysts and to verify whether there is diversity or standardization in their procedures and decisions. the study followed the activities of 27 senior securities analyst during a company evaluation. the results and comments are presented to support the contributions of the study and their implications for the securities analyst work.

Abstract: The choice of adequate information technology (IT) and careful implementation of Information System projects can lead to success or failure of opportunities in business. Therefore, this study sought to identify Critical Success Factors (CSF) for implementation of a formal methodology for system projects and Strategic Value (SV) as well as the reasons to adopt the methodology, in a large distributor of pharmaceutical products in Southern Brazil. The single case study was used and data were collected for quantitative and qualitative analysis. CFS show that support from senior management, possibility of changes in business processes, project manager skills and ability and commitment of users stood out as most relevant factors as well as the elements of SV, project schedule, product quality and cost reduction and the reasons for adopting the methodology were pressure to reduce costs and improve processes both internally and externally. However, a major contribution of this research was to highlight factors already mentioned in literature some years ago, that may support a better performance of IT in relation to other areas of the organization La elección de la Tecnología de Información (TI) adecuada y la cuidadosa implementación de proyectos de Sistemas de Información pueden significar el suceso o el fracaso de algunos negocios de las organizaciones.

ABSTRACT This work has as goal to verify how the individuals deal with the information in a decision process when they have interests in reaching previously established results. A multicriterial decision task was used, solved with the aid of a TSS. The research method was experimental, using experimental groups divided by the level of knowledge on the decision object (popular cars). Two independent variables were also inserted in the experiment, the quality of the information and the complexity of the task. Three variables, one of personal feature (knowledge level) and two of task (complexity of the task and information’s quality) were inserted with intention to test variations in the use of decision makers’ information. It was concluded that the individuals commit greater intentionally number of trespasses in the attribution of weights, that is, transgress axioms of the multicriterial method to choose one previous defined alternative. There is, also, no relation between the linearity of the process and the trespasses, discarding the linearity as an explanation for the trespasses. The result of this study supplies indications to prove that the decision makers have strong conceptual values in its structure of knowledge at th
Induced forests in regular graphs with large girth
Carlos Hoppen,Nicholas Wormald
Mathematics , 2007,
Abstract: An induced forest of a graph G is an acyclic induced subgraph of G. The present paper is devoted to the analysis of a simple randomised algorithm that grows an induced forest in a regular graph. The expected size of the forest it outputs provides a lower bound on the maximum number of vertices in an induced forest of G. When the girth is large and the degree is at least 4, our bound coincides with the best bound known to hold asymptotically almost surely for random regular graphs. This results in an alternative proof for the random case.
Local algorithms, regular graphs of large girth, and random regular graphs
Carlos Hoppen,Nicholas Wormald
Mathematics , 2013,
Abstract: We introduce a general class of algorithms and supply a number of general results useful for analysing these algorithms when applied to regular graphs of large girth. As a result, we can transfer a number of results proved for random regular graphs into (deterministic) results about all regular graphs with sufficiently large girth. This is an uncommon direction of transfer of results, which is usually from the deterministic setting to the random one. In particular, this approach enables, for the first time, the achievement of results equivalent to those obtained on random regular graphs by a powerful class of algorithms which contain prioritised actions. As examples, we obtain new upper or lower bounds on the size of maximum independent sets, minimum dominating sets, maximum and minimum bisection, maximum $k$-independent sets, minimum $k$-dominating sets and minimum connected and weakly-connected dominating sets in $r$-regular graphs with large girth.

Mathematics , 2013, DOI: 10.1080/03081087.2013.766395
Abstract: We introduce a new operation on a class of graphs with the property that the Laplacian eigenvalues of the input and output graphs are related. Based on this operation, we obtain a family of order (square root of n) noncospectral unicyclic graphs on n vertices with the same Laplacian energy.
Hypergraphs with many Kneser colorings (Extended Version)

Mathematics , 2011,
Abstract: For fixed positive integers $r, k$ and $\ell$ with $1 \leq \ell < r$ and an $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$, let $\kappa (H, k,\ell)$ denote the number of $k$-colorings of the set of hyperedges of $H$ for which any two hyperedges in the same color class intersect in at least $\ell$ elements. Consider the function $\KC(n,r,k,\ell)=\max_{H\in{\mathcal H}_{n}} \kappa (H, k,\ell) $, where the maximum runs over the family ${\mathcal H}_n$ of all $r$-uniform hypergraphs on $n$ vertices. In this paper, we determine the asymptotic behavior of the function $\KC(n,r,k,\ell)$ for every fixed $r$, $k$ and $\ell$ and describe the extremal hypergraphs. This variant of a problem of Erd\H{o}s and Rothschild, who considered edge colorings of graphs without a monochromatic triangle, is related to the Erd\H{o}s--Ko--Rado Theorem on intersecting systems of sets [Intersection Theorems for Systems of Finite Sets, Quarterly Journal of Mathematics, Oxford Series, Series 2, {\bf 12} (1961), 313--320].
