Abstract: The main objective of this paper is to analyze the impacts of the concession of tax incentives as a tool for entry promotion in a developing region. The simple model and the numerical example presented indicate that the adoption of tax incentives can cause very important effects. The productive structure could be heavily changed and production could increase improving conditions to consumers that benefit from the larger output and lower prices. Furthermore, the need for strategic action by the government in order to increase the chance of success of their development strategies is also emphasized, especially if one considers that firms often behave strategically.

Abstract: the article analyzes how the diseases that struck captives in colonial areas were named and explained in the treatise observa??es sobre as enfermidades dos negros (1776), written by french surgeon for the troops on santo domingo island, jean-barthélemy dazille. its translation into portuguese by surgeon-major ant?nio josé vieira de carvalho informs us about the circulation of knowledge among these agents who worked overseas. strongly informed by neo-hippocratism and by other lines of enlightened medicine, dazille's treatise and its translation raises considerations about the dangers of the so-called torrid zones, the general living and working conditions of "negroes," and the ways in which these were attenuated.

Abstract: in the present article, written just after completing brazilian composer lindembergue cardoso's catalogue of musical works, the author intends to present the composer's archive of musical documents, as well as to discuss characteristic aspects of his musical work. the archive consists of 189 complete and 43 unfinished or incomplete documents. considering that the composer's career developed over 25 years (1965-1989), we must admit that the volume of his legacy is expressive. there are 110 works with opus numbers and other pieces without opus number, among which we find arrangements, incidental music, a few transcriptions and orchestrations. regarding characteristic aspects of his work, the most significant ones are: intimacy with brazilian folk and popular music; religiosity; timbral creativity; eclectic aesthetics, resulting from the interaction between tradition and innovative procedures; a heterodox attitude in the use of traditional musical systems; valorization of scenic expression in musical conception; openness towards the interpreter's creativity; commitment to student and amateur ensembles.

Abstract: the objective of this text is to construct an interpretative framework capable of being applied as a set of hypotheses to studies of race relations in brazil. it presents twelve propositions that help determine the differentiating features of two types of prejudice and dynamics of racial situations in brazilian society and us society. this aim in mind, it denominates the form in which these features are presented in brazil as "mark prejudice", and the way in which they are constituted in the united states as "origin prejudice".
