Hernández-Romieu,Alfonso Claudio; Elnecavé-Olaiz,Alejandro; Huerta-Uribe,Nidia; Reynoso-Noverón,Nancy;
Salud Pública de México , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0036-36342011000100006
Abstract: objective: determine the influence of nutritional counseling, exercise, access to social healthcare and drugs, and the quality of medical care on the control of diabetics. material and methods: the information and blood samples were obtained in 2005. glycemic control was defined as good if hba1c was <7.0%, poor from 7.01% - 9.50% and very poor if hba1c >9.5%. binary logistic regression models were used to determine the association of these factors with hba1c>9.5%. results: thirty percent of the patients with a medical diagnosis of diabetes had adequate metabolic control. conclusions: nutritional guidance was associated with an increase in the degree of control. a majority of diabetics have poor or very poor glycemic control. strengthening the quality of and access to medical care for these patients is urgently needed.
Estimated incidence of cardiovascular complications related to type 2 diabetes in Mexico using the UKPDS outcome model and a population-based survey

Abstract: The cohort included all patients with type 2 diabetes evaluated during the National Health and Nutrition Survey (ENSANut) 2006. ENSANut is a probabilistic multistage stratified survey whose aim was to measure the prevalence of chronic diseases. A total of 47,152 households were visited. Results are shown stratified by gender, time since diagnosis (> or ≤ to 10 years) and age at the time of diagnosis (> or ≤ 40 years).The prevalence of diabetes in our cohort was 14.4%. The predicted 20 year-incidence for chronic complications per 1000 individuals are: ischemic heart disease 112, myocardial infarction 260, heart failure 113, stroke 101, and amputation 62. Furthermore, 539 per 1000 patients will have a diabetes-related premature death. The average life expectancy for the diabetic population is 10.9 years (95%CI 10.7-11.2); this decreases to 8.3 years after adjusting for quality of life (CI95% 8.1-8.5). Male sex and cases diagnosed after age 40 have the highest risk for developing at least one major complication during the next 20 years.Based on the current clinical profile of Mexican patients with diabetes, the burden of disease related complications will be tremendous over the next two decades.Diabetes is the principal cause of death in Mexico [1]. Its prevalence in adults over the age of 20 has grown from 6.7% in 1993 to nearly 14% in 2006 [2-4]. Nationwide population based surveys providing unbiased information regarding the prevalence and clinical characteristics of persons with diabetes are scant [5,6]. In Mexico, three nationwide surveys have shown that adults with type 2 diabetes have a high prevalence of co-morbid conditions which contribute to the high incidence of macrovascular and microvascular complications. Regrettably, the incidence of chronic complications is unknown.Simulation modeling is gaining acceptance as a valuable tool for providing long-term information regarding prognosis; such information is often unavailable from clinical studies. Abstract: the work presented here shows the importance of considering in the process of learning the rules and attitudes of students, for whom we made a characterization of such aspects in a group of middle school students using a questionnaire that is part of the hctaes test proposed by halpern (1998). this instrument can reveal the motivation of students in science classes and critical thinking skills, so the students greatly have become aware of what they learn during training.
LAS CUESTIONES SOCIOCIENTíFICAS: UNA ALTERNATIVA DE EDUCACIóN PARA LA SOSTENIBILIDAD
TORRES MERCHáN,NIDIA YANETH;
Luna Azul , 2011,
Abstract: the article presents a reflection on the use and dealing with the social-scientific matters (sc) in future teachers. this teaching strategy generates concerns related with the influence of science and technology in society and in the environment (ctse), promotes compromises in the education of attitudes and behaviors which are favorable for the achievement of a sustainable development, and reflects about the diverse environmental problems product of individual interests away from biological and cultural conservation. the sc allow the connection in a more striking way with a diversity of disciplinary topics, not only in order to obtain a cognitive learning in the students, but also the development of social, ethics and cultural capacities which promote an education for the sustainability with actions channeled to responsible social behavior when making decisions with a foundation. for this reason, the notions about the ctse approach and the advantages of using the cs are dealt with, thus illustrating the reflections that teachers are requested to make.

The electrical signature of rock samples exposed to hydrostatic and triaxial pressures
H. Heikamp,G. Nover
Annals of Geophysics , 2001, DOI: 10.4401/ag-3595
Abstract: The electrical signature of sedimentary (carbonate) and crystalline rock samples was studied in hydrostatic and triaxial pressure experiments up to 300 MPa. The aim was to establish a relation between an electrical signal stimulated by an external pressure acting on the sample and the mechanical stability of the rock. Natural open fractures tend to be closed under hydrostatic pressure conditions, whereas in triaxial pressure experiments new fractures are generated. These contrary processes of either decrease or increase in crack density and geometry, cause a decrease or increase in the inner surface of the sample. Such pressure induced variations in pore geometry were investigated by an interpretation and modelling of the frequency dependence of the complex electrical conductivity. In a series of hydrostatic pressure experiments crack-closure was found in the electrical signature by a decrease of the model capacitor C being related to crack geometry. This capacitor increases in the triaxial experiments where new fractures were formed.
