Abstract: a 35 weeks pregnant woman with clinical symptoms and signs of pancreatitis, which confirmed with increase of amylase and lipase serum values. a cesarean section had to be performed because fetal distress. newborn weight was 2.450 g, apgar score 6-9 and had a favorable outcome. patient was discharged after 15 days of hospitalization. acute pancreatitis in pregnancy is a severe condition that requires a prompt diagnosis and treatment to secure maternal and fetal well being. a correct management of this infrequent association remains of critical importance

A 35 weeks pregnant woman with clinical symptoms and signs of pancreatitis, which confirmed with increase of amylase and lipase serum values. Optimal Deterministic Investment Strategies for Insurers
Nicole B?uerle,Ulrich Rieder
Risks , 2013, DOI: 10.3390/risks1030101
Abstract: We consider an insurance company whose risk reserve is given by a Brownian motion with drift and which is able to invest the money into a Black–Scholes financial market. As optimization criteria, we treat mean-variance problems, problems with other risk measures, exponential utility and the probability of ruin. Following recent research, we assume that investment strategies have to be deterministic. This leads to deterministic control problems, which are quite easy to solve. Moreover, it turns out that there are some interesting links between the optimal investment strategies of these problems. Finally, we also show that this approach works in the Lévy process framework.
Partially Observable Risk-Sensitive Markov Decision Processes
Nicole B?uerle,Ulrich Rieder
Mathematics , 2015,
Abstract: We consider the problem of minimizing a certainty equivalent of the total or discounted cost over a finite and an infinite time horizon which is generated by a Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP). The certainty equivalent is defined by $U^{-1}(EU(Y))$ where $U$ is an increasing function. In contrast to a risk-neutral decision maker this optimization criterion takes the variability of the cost into account. It contains as a special case the classical risk-sensitive optimization criterion with an exponential utility. We show that this optimization problem can be solved by embedding the problem into a completely observable Markov Decision Process with extended state space and give conditions under which an optimal policy exists. The state space has to be extended by the joint conditional distribution of current unobserved state and accumulated cost. In case of an exponential utility, the problem simplifies considerably and we rediscover what in previous literature has been named information state. However, since we do not use any change of measure techniques here, our approach is simpler. A small numerical example, namely the classical repeated casino game with unknown success probability is considered to illustrate the influence of the certainty equivalent and its parameters.
Gas Storage valuation with regime switching
Nicole B?uerle,Viola Riess
Quantitative Finance , 2014, DOI: 10.1007/s12667-015-0178-0
Abstract: In this paper we treat a gas storage valuation problem as a Markov Decision Process. As opposed to existing literature we model the gas price process as a regime-switching model. Such a model has shown to fit market data quite well in Chen and Forsyth (2010). Before we apply a numerical algorithm to solve the problem, we first identify the structure of the optimal injection and withdraw policy. This part extends results in Secomandi (2010). Knowing the structure reduces the complexity of the involved recursion in the algorithms by one variable. We explain the usage and implementation of two algorithms: A Multinomial-Tree Algorithm and a Least-Square Monte Carlo Algorithm. Both algorithms are shown to work for the regime-switching extension. In a numerical study we compare these two algorithms.
European integration and social convergence: A qualitative appraisal
Attia Nicole,Bérenger Valérie
Panoeconomicus , 2009, DOI: 10.2298/pan0901003a
Abstract: Although with the Maastricht Treaty, European construction took a remarkable step forward, the robust pillar of the single currency started to shake the other one: the social welfare systems. The main goal of this contribution is to study the evolution of Social Protection in Europe by questioning the existence of a convergence between the different social welfare systems and the impact of the Treaty of Maastricht on this process. The evolution of the social protection concept in Europe, the reforms implemented in the most important domains of social protection: pensions, health and employment are analyzed. A common philosophy clearly appears. The welfare State is receding, calling more and more upon market mechanisms. Furthermore, the traditional binary typology is changing and countries are becoming more similar in their financing methods. We can thus say that a process of social convergence seems well and truly underway in the European Union.
