Evidence on Night Movements of Macroinvertebrates to Macrophytes in a Pampean Stream  [PDF]
Nicolás Ferreiro
Open Journal of Modern Hydrology (OJMH) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ojmh.2014.43009
Nocturnal invertebrate abundance peaks in lotic systems are usually associated to drift, however, diel migrations other than drift may be important in slow-flowing systems. Then, macroinvertebrate distribution on macrophytes may change along the day as result of vertical or horizontal migration from sediments or the water column. My objective was to determine whether macroinvertebrate abundance on macrophytes changes along 24 h. Three Ceratophyllum demersum patches were sampled in late spring from the Las Flores stream (Central Argentina) at 11:20 h, 17:10 h, 23:00 h and 5:00 h. Macroinvertebrates were counted and identified, and relative abundances were estimated for each sampling time. The dominant groups of macroinvertebrates sampled were Oligochaeta, Amphipoda and Cladocera. The relative abundance of macroinvertebrates on macrophytes was the highest at 5:00 h, when dissolved oxygen in water reached its minimum. In conclusion, the abundance of macroinvertebrates on macrophytes in Pampean streams may increase at night, probably as result of nocturnal migration driven by changes in predation risk or dissolved oxygen.
Discussing options between patients and health care professionals in genetic diagnosis: ethical and legal criteria
Pilar Nicolás
Hereditary Cancer in Clinical Practice , 2007, DOI: 10.1186/1897-4287-5-3-144
Abstract: Specific questions regarding the ethics of genetic testing in cancer diagnosis have been raised because of the specific characteristics of the data obtained. The obtaining and use of genetic data have several peculiar implications for the rights of the patients and their relatives, and frequently practitioners and researchers face new conflicts, to which law and ethics try to give an answer. This concern has increased because, in general, law cannot provide a concrete answer to each concrete situation and, furthermore, there is no regulation of genetic analysis or genetic data in several countries. For these reasons, practitioners often need to make personal decisions in these situations. Some criteria to manage genetic information in cancer diagnosis will be presented in this article.It has been proposed that if genetic data are different from other health data they require specific ethical and legal reflection. This position is known as genetic exceptionalism [1].As has been said, some characteristics of genetic data are shared by other health data, but what is peculiar is the presence of all of these special characteristics and this circumstance means that around the genetic data several different interests are involved, and this has real effects, such as the need for recommendations in this field.In 2004, the European Commission published a document with twenty-five recommendations on ethical, legal and social implications of genetic testing in which it said that "genetic exceptionalism should be avoided, internationally, in the context of the EU and at the level of its Member States. However, the public perception that genetic testing is different needs to be acknowledged and addressed. All medical data, including genetic data, must satisfy equally high standards of quality and confidentiality" [2]. It is true that the principles to be applied to solve the conflicts dealing with the treatment of genetic data are also applicable to conflicts in the field of heal
The Cinchona Program (1940-1945): science and imperialism in the exploitation of a medicinal plant
Dynamis , 2011, DOI: 10.4321/S0211-95362011000100009
Abstract: during world war ii, the united states implemented programs to exploit hundreds of raw materials in latin america, many of them botanical. this required the participation of the country's scientific community and marked the beginning of intervention in latin american countries characterized by the active participation of the united states in negotiations (and not only by private firms supported by the united states). many federal institutions and companies were created, others were adapted, and universities, research centers and pharmaceutical companies were contracted. the programs undertaken by this coalition of institutions served to build and consolidate the dependence of latin american countries on united states technology, to focus their economies on the extraction and development of resources that the united states could not obtain at home (known as "complementary") and to impede the development of competition. latin american republics had been historically dependant on raw material exports (minerals and plants). but during world war ii their dependence on us loans, markets, science and technology reached record levels. one example of this can be appreciated through a careful examination of the cinchona program, implemented in the 1940s by us agencies in latin america. this program for the extraction of a single medicinal plant, apart from representing a new model of scientific imperialism (subsequently renamed "scientific cooperation") was the most intensive and extensive scientific exploration of a single medicinal plant in the history of mankind.
Conflictos y posibilidades de los escritores en el exilio. La discusión entre émile Cioran y Witold Gombrowicz
Anagramas -Rumbos y sentidos de la comunicación- , 2011,
Abstract: this article analyzes the answers the polish writer witold gombrowicz (exiled in argentina between 1939 and 1963) gave to the romanian philosopher emile cioran who published ''advantages and disadvantages of exile'' in 1953; an essay where he writes about writers in exile. the text promoted an interesting discussion by the polish writer. although the discussion was not successfully accepted, it was a very symbolic theme about the situation at that time. for this study, we look for support in gombrowicz's statements in his diary (published by the polich journal kultura) which became an priceless source as time passed, not only for studying his life and work, but also the environment of that period and the analysis made to exile in general.
Desafíos de la gerencia y el liderazgo de la educación superior
Rubino,Antonio Nicolás;
Investigación y Postgrado , 2007,
Abstract: this paper is the result of a modest revision of the literature about some current tendencies in management and leadership within the latin american context. these tendencies have been produced as a consequence of a reductionist approach, based on a positivist managerial training that has not allowed us to conceive them as parts of a systemic process, with a lot of interrelations with the environment and society. management and leadership in higher levels have to take place in four key areas. nevertheless, in the practice, those areas are interconnected, and the definition of the boundaries among them is very hard. in this regard, leadership is mentioned along with elements inherent to the organization and the environment, the adoption and development of the infrastructures, strategic planning based on the environment and organizational analysis. then, the conclusion drawn is that putting into force these practices is deeply related with the skills, values and principles that leaders must bear and put in practice.

Abstract: the constitutional reform act 20,050 conditioned the admissibility of the action of inapplicability to the fulfillment of the requirements of article 93, paragraph 11 of the constitution. the jurisprudence of inadmissibility, throughout these years, has been plentiful and allows extract certain criteria that have guided the court's reasoning on this point. this is a study on the main criteria to be identified in that jurisprudence.
Caracterización de la flora vascular de Altos de Chicauma, Chile (33o S)
Gayana. Botánica , 2010, DOI: 10.4067/S0717-66432010000100007
Abstract: a total richness of 602 specifc and infra-specifc taxa is reported for the locality of altos de chicauma, situated in the metropolitan region?s coastal mountain range, chile (33o s), between 500 and 2.200 m of altitude. chile?s endemic taxa constitute 41% and the southern cone endemics equal 66% of the total flora, while 14% corresponds to alien flora. the total flora is characterized according to its presence in seven habitat-types. a commented systematic list is presented where each taxon is characterized according to its growth habit, geographic origin, relative frequency, and presence per habitat-type in chicauma. herbarium material supporting the presence in this locality is indicated for 572 taxa (95%). the total flora and the habitat-types? partial floras were characterized according to their richness, origin and biologic-types compositions. a similarity analysis between the habitats? native floras indicates that the species composition differs signifcantly to the rest in ?high-mountainous hydric environments?, ?creeks and ravines?, ?xeric?, and in the pairs, ?valley sclerophyllous - montane sclerophyllous? and ?deciduous - high-mountainous? habitats. the presence of 14 endangered species, nine central chile?s coastal mountain range endemics, 13 metropolitan-valparaiso regions? mountain endemics, and fve distributional limits are reported for this locality.

NIETZSCHE Y BUERO VALLEJO: Lo apolíneo y lo dionisíaco en la tragedia En la ardiente oscuridad
Naranjo Boza,Nicolás;
Estudios de Filosofía , 2006,
Abstract: summary. the thought of friedrich nietzsche?s the birth of tragedy is briefly recounted, particularly what pertains to the gods apollo and dionysus. artisitic contents in the play in the burning darkness (en la ardiente oscuridad) are analyzed to explain how the world vision that is displayed in the first published book of the philosopher appears in this piece by the spainard. the roads that enabled buero vallejo to know this work are traced and, in this sense, miguel de unamuno is granted a fundamental role. the analysis includes a thorough search of what aristotle terms the evolution of the plot, its complication and denouement in buero vallejo?s play, bearing in mind the main characters. the theme of divine justice as expressed by the pre-socratic philosopher anaximander is also brought into the essay to explain the presence of the divinities, as understood by nietzsche, in the play. an explanation of how a philosophy is given form in a play meant to be represented, is given.
