Housing satisfaction and quality of life in RDP houses in Braamfischerville, Soweto: A South African case study
Raeesa Moolla,Nico Kotze,Liz Block
Urbani Izziv , 2011,
Abstract: The African National Congress (ANC) government initiated the building of Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) housing units in order to provide housing to the previously disadvantaged and to address the severe housing backlog that has developed in South Africa in recent years. However, in spite of the good intentions, there has been profound criticism with regard to the inferior building standards and quality of these housing units, as well as the lack of services and amenities in these development projects. The research for this paper was conducted in 2008. The residents of the Braamfischerville area in Soweto were chosen as sample respondents. Aspects such as demographic data, monthly income and monthly expenses were ascertained for each household using a systematic questionnaire. The level of satisfaction with regard to specific housing attributes such as the house itself, windows, doors, the roof and so on was rated using a five-point Likert Scale and determined from interviews. It was also found that residents identified proximity to basic services and amenities as being equally important as the appearance of the property as a contributing factor leading to satisfaction. It therefore proved to be important to establish basic amenities near newly developed communities. The findings revealed that there were specific grievances concerning the quality of the housing units and access to basic services and amenities that reduced the level of satisfaction in terms of housing and that consequently had a negative impact on the quality of life of Braamfisherville residents.
ivljenje v spreminjajo i se kitajski urbani pokrajini: tudija mesta Dalian
Juyong Zhang,Nico Kotze,Minghui Yu
Urbani Izziv , 2012,
Rezultati ankete so jasno razkrili negotovost ve ine anketirancev glede spremenljivk, povezanih s kakovostjo stanovanj ter z naravo, s kakovostjo in z dostopnostjo razpolo ljivih storitev. Kljub temu je najve anketirancev navedlo, da imajo javni promet, odprte prostore, parke in rekreativne povr ine na voljo blizu doma.
Living in a changing Chinese urban landscape: The Dalian case study
Juyong Zhang,Nico Kotze,Minghui Yu
Urbani Izziv , 2012,
Abstract: Dalian is the second–most important city in the southern part of Liaoning Province in northeast China. The city can trace its history back to the Qingniwa settlement. This settlement was occupied from 1858 until 1950 in succession by the British, Japanese and Russian Empires, with each imposing its own building styles on the city. However, from 1950, when the city was finally returned to China by the Russians, who had captured it from the Japanese during the Second World War, most of the imperial buildings and sites were lost to redevelopment within the city. The most dramatic changes have taken place since 1984, when the city was declared a Special Economic Zone, and particularly during the 1990s, when Bo Xilai became the mayor and introduced parks, extensive motorways and many traffic circles. At present, having lost most of its traditional built environment, Dalian is a modern city marked by dramatic housing developments and dominated by multi-family high-rise buildings to accommodate its population of 5.72 million. In 2011, a survey was conducted among 400 inhabitants of the city to ascertain their perceptions concerning life in Dalian and the Dalian Development Zone, their living conditions and their level of satisfaction with their housing. From the survey, it was clear that the majority of the interviewees were uncertain about the variables concerning the structural quality of their housing units and the nature, quality and accessibility of the services provided. However, most of them indicated that public transport, open spaces, parks and recreational facilities were within easy reach of their housing units.
Zadovoljstvo s stanovanji v naselju Braamfischerville v Sowetu in kakovost ivljenja v njih: tudija primera iz Ju noafri ke republike
Raeesa Moolla,Nico Kotze,Liz Block
Urbani Izziv , 2011,
Abstract: Vlada afri kega nacionalnega kongresa (ang.

The duality of coding assessment information
GS Kotze
South African Journal of Education , 2003,
Abstract: The challenges and activities of outcomes-based education and very often the beauty of this 'new' approach are often overshadowed by the realities of the classroom and the difficulties of assessment. One of the greatest problems concerning outcomes that address knowledge, skills and values is to determine and qualify different types of assessment information. This article examines the dichotomy of determining or qualifying, i.e. grading or portraying assessment information. The article investigates, firstly, the setting of practical criteria and, secondly, the adequacy of assessment criteria in guiding the judgments of the assessor. A possible guide for coding assessment information is suggested with specific reference to mathematics as learning area. South African Journal of Education Vol.23(4) 2003: 338-343
Counter-Insurgency in the Cape Colony, 1872 - 1882
JS Kotze
Scientia Militaria: South African Journal of Military Studies , 2003,
Abstract: The acceptance of responsible government in 1872 entailed that the Cape Colony had to provide its own security arrangements. The two British regiments that were still deployed at the Cape were reserved solely for imperial purposes. Moreover, the Cape Government now had to assist the High Commissioner with the maintenance of law and order in the adjacent tribal territories of the Transkei and Basotholand. Unrest and internal conflict were almost endemic in the Cape Colony's area of interest during the period 1872 to 1882. Besides a number of conflict situations of a smaller nature, the colonial forces were involved in five major insurgencies, namely the Cape-Xhosa or Ninth Eastern Frontier War (1877-1878), The Northern Frontier War (1878-1879), the Baphuhti Rebellion (1879), the Transkeian Rebellion (1880-1881) and the Rebellion in Basotholand (1880-1882). This paper traces the development of policy and doctrine, administrative and military, by the Cape Government to pacifY the Eastern Cape frontier region. Special attention is given to security and defence policy, the policy of direct control of the adjacent tribal territories as well as the disarmament policy. Furthermore the reactions of the indigenous communities to these policies as well as the demands placed on the colonial military system are investigated. It is concluded that the policies of the successive Cape governments were either impracticable or resulted in the erosion of the traditional power structures among the black communities to the extent that from 1877 onwards, internal conflict became the order of the day. Perceived to be "mere instruments of political will", the colonial forces were synonymous with the reprehensible colonial control and found it impossible to deter public violence or prevent the escalation of the conflicts. The colonial government expected unrealistic strategic results from the colonial armed forces. Military reforms were mostly reactive and too little was done too late. The Molteno as well as the Sprigg ministry eventually paid the highest political price for the failure of their respective defence schemes not least of which was the failure of their counterinsurgency strategies.
Perioperative nutrition: what do we know?
V Kotze
South African Journal of Clinical Nutrition , 2011,
Abstract: Surgery patients are at risk for iatrogenic malnutrition and subsequent deleterious effects. The benefits of nutrition support on patient outcomes have been demonstrated and the possible benefit of perioperative nutrition support thus implied. Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols, including perioperative nutrition support as a component thereof, is indicated in the management of patients. In contrast to this, it seems the current trend is to follow the traditional perioperative management even when existing data demonstrate no merit in continuing with these practices. Data suggests that all surgical patients should receive early postoperative nutrition support. Immunonutrition, as part of ERAS has also been reported to derive beneficial effects in surgery patient outcomes but current clinical practice guidelines are inconsistent with regards to the administration of specific immunonutrients. Arginine is an immunonutrient that is of specific interest in surgical patients due to an assumed deficiency thereof. Insufficient arginine levels can lead to immunosuppression with an increased risk for complications. Available evidence indicates that all patients undergoing elective surgery with substantial risk of infectious complications should be prescribed arginine-supplemented diets along with omega-3 fatty acids, preferably pre- and postoperatively. No recommendations can be made on the practice of combined glutamine and arginine supplementation.
The influence of residential desegregation on property prices in South Africa: The Peitersburg case study
NJ Kotze
Journal of Family Ecology and Consumer Sciences /Tydskrif vir Gesinsekologie en Verbruikerswetenskappe , 1999,
Investigating shape and space in mathematics: A case study
G Kotze
South African Journal of Education , 2007,
Abstract: In this investigation I focused on a process of activities of a particular group of teachers and learners. Basic skills in mastering mathematical concepts were addressed. The focus was on concept formation in the geometry classroom. The methodology involved an educational case study as a form of inquiry to investigate spatial sense. Evidence was obtained regarding mathematics teachers' and mathematics learners' knowledge of space and shape. Problems experienced in concept formation in geometry were investigated and analysed. An account is provided of how teachers and learners responded to problems related to space and shape. Information about the mathematical performance of a group of mathematics teachers and mathematics learners is organised, interpreted, and evaluated.
