Abstract: the changes in air velocity, as a function of stacking of fruit pulp packages (100g), offering a resistance to air flow in commercial boxes were evaluated and the air flow rates estimated during blast freezing operations. velocities were initially measured prior to passing the air through the multi-layer stacks of boxes in the chamber. processing of the data was accomplished by applying a non-linear regression routine. air flow rates were determined by numerical integration from adjusted air flow velocity profiles and appeared to be 10% higher than those obtained by the traditional procedure. under constant operating conditions of the fan, the results for the 7-layer arrays of boxed products exhibited a 62% reduction in the flux of chilling air, in relation to the 3-layer arrays, and 50.9% decrease with respect to the 5-layer array. these values were directly proportional to the void space available for air flow.

Abstract: As varia es nas velocidades do ar causadas pela resistência ao escoamento em fun o da quantidade de embalagens de polpa de frutas (100g), acondicionadas em caixas comerciais durante o processo de congelamento, foram avaliadas e as vaz es estimadas, com base em um método de tratamento dos dados experimentais. As velocidades foram medidas antes da passagem do ar pelo empilhamento de caixas na camara. As medi es foram analisadas utilizando-se uma rotina de regress o n o linear e as vaz es determinadas pelo método de integra o numérica dos perfis das velocidades ajustadas. O método apresentou estima o 10% superior à encontrada pelo método tradicional. Mantendo as condi es operacionais do ventilador constantes, a vaz o para arranjos de sete camadas resultou ser 62% inferior à de três camadas e, 50,9% inferior à de cinco camadas. Estes valores foram proporcionais à redu o do espa o livre para escoamento do ar.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to monitor the operational conditions of the transport of chilled and frozen foods during delivery within cities and to evaluate the impact of the door openings on the alteration of the internal temperature of the refrigerated environment. several temperature and pressure sensors were used in a refrigerated container with two compartments and they were installed in the refrigeration system unit and on the internal and external surfaces of the container. after the monitoring tests, it was verified that door openings during deliveries resulted in a disturbance that raised the internal temperature of the refrigerated container above values recommended for adequate conservation of the products transported. moreover, increasing the number of door openings promoted a cumulative effect on the internal temperature, mainly in the chilled food compartment of the container. it was concluded that the refrigeration system unit presented serious limitations with regard to the maintenance of the container's internal temperature during the actual distribution routine, since it does not possess enough instantaneous capacity to restore the temperature set-point between deliveries.

Abstract: the objective of this work is to build an experimental portable forced-air freezing tunnel which creates a low or high pressure region surrounding the product. comparative studies with air exhausting and blowing were conducted. the tunnel was built and placed inside a freezing product storage chamber, and the objective was to improve the air circulation and the thermal distribution between the product and cold air for a sample batch left inside the chamber. a heat transfer analysis comparing the process and the air distribution around the product was performed. the air evacuation process reduced up to 14% of the freezing time in relation to the blowing system and 10% in relation to the mixed system.

Abstract: purpose: to assess, through ultrasound biomicroscopy (ubm), the positioning of the intraocular lenses (iol) haptics as related to the ciliary sulcus by using a scleral fixation technique; and to evaluate, as well, if two fixation points are sufficient to avoid tilting of the lenses. methods: sixteen aphakic eyes underwent an iol implan-tation by means of the same scleral fixation technique, performed by the same surgeon. one month following surgery, both the positioning of the iol haptics and the distances between the iols and the cornea were assessed by ubm. results were statistically studied. results: of the 32 intraocular lenses haptics fixed to the sclera, eight were placed in the ciliary sulcus and 24 were placed out of the ciliary sulcus. there was no statistical difference in the distances measured between the intraocular lenses and the cornea for the haptics placed out of the ciliary sulcus as compared to the haptics placed in the ciliary sulcus, suggesting that other factors, besides the distance to the limbus, may be relevant in the positioning of haptics in the ciliary sulcus. the same measurements performed at 3, 6, 9, and 12 hours, on the periphery of the lenses, were also similar, suggesting that 2-point fixation is sufficient to avoid tilting of the lenses in the eye. conclusions: further factors (e.g. the ciliary sulcus opening angle), other than the distance of the limbus where the sclera is transfixed, are important for the placement of the lenses in the ciliary sulcus. two fixation points are sufficient to avoid tilting of the iol in the eye.

Abstract: post-harvest shelf life of fruits and vegetables is direct related to storage temperatures of these products. at controlled conditions of temperature and humidity, the speed of metabolic reactions can be reduced, allowing better conservation of the products. the evaluation was carried out in the terminal market of s?o paulo- ceagesp, to identify the condition of cold chambers used for storage of fruits and vegetables. the parameters investigated were: air temperature, relative humidity, refrigerated conditions, type of floor, chamber and door dimensions. data were used to calculate thermal load. apples and pears were the most stored commodities (63.25%) in ceagesp, followed by bananas (24.10%). based on the average commercialization volume, it was observed that 73.91% of the motors were super dimensioned.

Abstract: in de past 50 years, maternal mortality rates have declined, in contrast, the number of deaths due to injury during pregnancy is on the rise. the authors report a case of 24° week pregnant woman victim of penetrating abdominal trauma by gunshot who sustained a grade i11 transfixing injury of the uterine fundus. treatment was conservative regarding the fetus. hysteroraphia of the injuries was executed with closure of both penetrating orifices. obstetrical-gynecological evaluation and echogram documented letal viability in the post-operative period. post-operative follow-up was performed with periodical echograms up to delivery on the ninth month. clinical findings, treatment and follow-up will be discussed.

Abstract: this work presents a study to compare the orange valência (citrus sinensis o.) cooling with forced-air cooling and hydrocooling. the forced-air cooling system operated with air flow of 1933m3/h, at 1oc, rh= 88,4 ± 2,0% and air velocity around 1m/s. the experiments with immersion hydrocooling systems with capacity of 0,23m3 of water at 1oc, approximately. the half-cooling time and seven-eighths cooling time, they are determinate with the temperature data, made two repetitions. the results showed that the cooling the bed fruits, with air cooling, is not homogeneous, and obtained cooling time average, between 107min and 170min, depending on the position the fruit in the package. in the hydrocooling system, the cooling of the bed fruits happens uniformly in the bed, with average cooling time of 57min.
