Abstract: a cross-sectional descriptive study of 340 persons assigned to two groups, with and without family history of diabetes mellitus type 2 (dm2), was carried out. the objective was to detect whether those persons with family history of dm2 had more hyperinsulemia, metabolic syndrome, associated cardiovascular risk factors and target organ lesions, expressed in left ventricle hypertrophy, than subjects without diabetes family history. the result was that hyperinsulemia was present in 96 patients with family history of dm2 (56,5 %) and significance level of p= 0,001. metabolic syndrome was more frequent in subjects with family history of dm2 (90) for 52,9 % of cases and p= 0,000. hypertriglyceridemia was both the most noticeable marker of the metabolic syndrome and the most statistically significant risk factor in subjects with family history of dm2 (96 , 52,9 % of cases and p= 0,000). left ventricle hypertrophy was associated as target organ lesion expression to subjects with family history of dm2 (36: 21,2 % and p=0,043). it was concluded that subjects with family history of dm2 are more likely to have hyperinsulinemia, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular risk factors and target organ lesions than those persons without such a family history of dm2.

Abstract: background: intersectorial action in health has been the methodology proposed for reducing inequality in health. the objectives of this study are to ascertain what experiences, expectations and needs are perceived to exist among the professionals working at provincial organizations in order to propose a framework for analyzing and carrying out intersectorial work. methods: with a qualitative design, 21 semi-structured individual surveys were conducted in july 2005 of professionals from provincial justice, education, health, equality and welfare organization and from law enforcement officials in granada and seville. an intentional ?snowball? sampling was used, in which it was possible to complete the profile table by way of two individuals answering the survey. results: the professionals identified needs which it would be necessary to cover with the intersectorial work as well as the grounds for the same. they highlighted a number of personal traits and some organization-related ones and identified factors which have been divided among, political, social and operative factors. conclusions: a consensus exists as to pointing out intersectorial action as a way of guaranteeing the reduction of social inequality, given that it prevents doubling resources and unifies the response being provided. it was thought to be fundamental for some profound changes to first be made in the provincial organizations culture in or for the intersectorial work to comprise part thereof. these changes must go along with clear-cut guidelines at the upper levels of social movements which will clearly highlight the need for a certain intersectorial action in particular.

Abstract: relationship between antophyte foliar morphology and abiotic factors in the main rainforests of eastern cuba. the foliar morphology of representative antophytes in four rainforest types of eastern cuba was studied in relation to the main abiotic factors. although there are several leaf types in these forests, the microphyll type is the most important among endemic species in the ophiolites complex and the montane rainforest. at the lowland rainforest (metamorphic complex) the mesophyll leaf was the most important. most foliar epidermis had structures normally found in mesomorphic plants, but xeromorphic and higromorphic morphologies were also present. rev. biol. trop. 57 (1-2): 235-256. epub 2009 june 30.

Abstract: a study about distribution of spermatophytes living on rainforest of oriental region of cuba was performed with the objective to know their relationships to other sectors and districts of cuba, as well as other fioristic provinces from caribbean region, mainly. the distribution of species was obtained by bibliographical revision while in those considered endemic species were consulted in addition a data base. each endemism were classified according to lópez et al. (1994a) and were located on different phytogeographic units of cuba according to samek (1973). the classifications of disjunctions were carried out according to borhidi (1991). for non-endemic species a separation among taxa belonging rainforest of grupo orográfico sagua-baracoa sub-region and those of sierra maestra sub-region were done, according to nunez & vi?a (1989). each taxon was located in kingdoms and regions of the world according to schmidt (1969), while in the caribbean region were according to borhidi y mu?iz (1986), ratified by borhidi (1991, 1996). evolutionary centers of families were definite from gentry (1982). dendrograms were obtained making tree matrix, one of them for all endemism and the two remainder for non-endemic species of caribbean region, which are on rainforest of both nor oriental and south oriental sub-sector. the classifications of rainforest were carried out according to reyes & acosta (2005) and reyes (2006). the endemic species are mostly distributed on cuba oriental sector and among several districts in it. in addition to this sector, the nearest relationships are with escambray district in central cuba and secondly to sierra del rosario district, in western cuba. these endemic species show three types of disjunction, but those that have bisectorial distribution and trisectorial distribution are found to be the greatest. the non-endemic species from rainforest have the nearest relationships to caribbean region, antillean sub-region, la espa?ola province, within neotrop
ESTUDIO Y EVALUACIóN DE LAS COMUNIDADES VEGETALES EN LA PLAYA SANTA LUCíA (CUBA), ANTES Y DESPUéS DEL PASO DEL HURACáN IKE
MARTíNEZ-QUESADA,EDDY;
Caldasia , 2011,
Abstract: a study and evaluation of the plant communities from santa lucia beach, north of camagüey province (cuba), before and after the step of hurricane ike was done. the results showed that some communities disappeared; others reduced or extended their range. others, however, are new. the species diversity did not change considerably, but the dominance of these did. most of the species are widely distributed and easy to adapt to several types of substrata, which together with the absence of a barrier, favors the resettling of the habitat by almost the same composition of species that previously occupied the area. the predominance of the hemicriptophytes is a direct consequence of the structural characteristics of the communities, determined by the dominant climatic and edaphic conditions.
CARACTERIZACIóN DE LA FLORA VASCULAR EN LA MESETA DE SAN FELIPE, PROVINCIA CAMAGüEY (CUBA), PARA SU CONSERVACIóN
MARTíNEZ-QUESADA,EDDY;
Caldasia , 2010,
Abstract: for conservation purposes, the vascular flora of san felipe table-land, an important locality within ophiolitic outcrup of camagüey province was studied. a total of 585 infrageneric taxa were recorded, mainly of magnoliophyta, 97 of which are endemism, most of them with a large distribution range; 19 species are new records, some of them with phytogeographic significance, for which critically endangered (cr) category of provincial interest is proposed. these species, as well as those considered critically endangered (cr) and endangered (en) are identified as priority conservation objects. the conservation of endemic and threatened flora on the table-land has to be in situ.

A study about distribution of spermatophytes living on rainforest of Oriental Region of Cuba was performed with the objective to know their relationships to other sectors and districts of Cuba, as well as other fioristic provinces from Caribbean Region, mainly.
