Optimal Timing of Fungicide Applications for the Control of Podosphaera leucotricha, the Causal Agent of Peach Rusty Spot in Serbia

Abstract: Peach rusty spot has regularly occurred in Serbia in recent years, causing significanteconomic losses in the production of late maturing cultivars (Summerset, Suncrest, Fayetteand O’Henry). Concerns regarding the etiology of this disease have been solved using molecularidentification and cross-pathogenicity tests, which have proved that peach rustyspot is caused by Podosphaera leucotricha. The usual recommended strategy for its control,by multiple treatments starting from petal fall phenophase, has not proved satisfactory inagro-ecological conditions in Serbia. After testing the fungicide efficacy, a three-year studywas carried out to determine the precise treatment terms and make the control of P. leucotrichamore efficient.The investigation was conducted in the conditions of natural infection in a Summersetcultivar orchard at the locality of Bela Crkva, during the period 2006-2008. Nine differentvariants of both single and mixed treatments were tested, covering six defined peachgrowth phenophases - from green top, until the phenophase of second fruit falling. In theconditions of high levels of natural infection in the control plots, in all three investigationyears the most efficient was the variant in which kresoxim-methyl was applied three times:in green top, pink bud and full bloom phenophases (91.69 - 91.92%), followed by the variantof treatments in the phenophases of rose bud, full bloom and petal fall (86.3-87.87%)and the variant of two treatments, performed in the phenophases of pink bud and full bloom(79.3-83.09%). The other tested variants showed significantly lower efficiency. The resultsobtained could significantly contribute to better peach fruit production, without lossescaused by peach rusty spot which is commercially very important disease in Serbia.
Pseudomonas syringae – Pathogen of Sweet Cherry in Serbia

Abstract: Characteristics of pathogenic Pseudomonas bacterial strains isolated from cherry inSerbia are presented in the article. Two types of symptoms were observed on cherry treesat few localities with intensive production in Serbia (Belgrade, a ak, Topola, abac, NoviSad). The first symptom is bud necrosis and the second bacterial canker of cherry branch.Gram negative, fluorescent, oxidative bacterial strains were isolated from the margin ofnecrotic tissue. All investigated strains were levan and HR positive, while negative resultswere recorded for oxidase, pectinase and arginin dihydrolase tests (LOPAT+- - - +).Based on pathogenicity tests and differential GATT tests, investigated strains weredivided in two distinct groups: the first group consisted of strains isolated from necroticcherry branch which caused necrosis on artificially inoculated cherry, pear and lemon fruits,syringae leaves and bean pods, were gelatin and aesculin positive, and tyrosinase and tartratenegative (typical characteristics of P.s. pv. syringae). Contrary, second group strainswere isolated from necrotic cherry buds, showed negative results in mentioned pathogenicitytests, gelatin and aesculin tests were negative, while tyrosinase and tartrate werepositive (typical characteristics of P.s. pv. morsprunorum).REP PCR analyses showed that strains isolated from necrotic cherry buds belong to P. spv. morsprunorum compared to referent strain. In contrast, isolates obtained from necroticcherry branches had unique fingerprint profiles but different from all reference strains.According to the obtained results it was concluded that both pathovars of P. syringae(syringae and morsprunorum) cause necrosis of cherry trees in Serbia.
Characteristics of Bacterial Strains from Pseudomonas Genera Isolated from Diseased Plum Trees

Abstract: Characteristics of Pseudomonas syringae strains isolated from diseased plum trees are presented is this paper. Based on pathogenic, biochemical and physiological characteristics, isolated starins were divided into two groups: First group of strains, isolated from diseased plum branches with symptoms of suden decay, was simillar to Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae; second group of strains, isolated from necrotic flower buds on plum trees, exhibited characteristics simillar to Pseudomonas syringae pv. morsprunorum. In addition, phytopathogenic fungi belonging to genera Phomopsis, Botryosphaeria and Leucostoma, were also isolated from diseased plum trees. Further study of these pathogens and their role in the epidemiology of suden plum trees decay is in progress.
First Report of Tumorigenic Agrobacterium radiobacter on Raspberry in Serbia

Abstract: During the spring of 2003, gall symptoms on the roots and crowns of young raspberry plants cv. Vilamette were observed near Valjevo. Phytopathogenic bacteria were isolated from diseased plant samples. Based on the pathogenic, morphological, differential biochemicaland physiological characteristics, the isolated strains were identified as tumorigenic Agrobacterium radiobacter (biovar 1 Agrobacterium). In order to confirm the identity of isolated strains by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers complementary to tms2 genelocated on the Ti plasmid were used. In the first PCR protocol using a tms2F1 + tms2R2 primer pair, 617 bp products specific for tumorigenic Agrobacterium strains were amplified. The second PCR protocol, using a tms2F1 + tms2B primer pair, amplified the expected 458 bp products. On the basis of multiplex PCR with primers complementary to chromosomal gene coding for 23S rRNA, the isolated strains were classified as biovar 1 Agrobacterium (A. radiobacter). This is the first report of tumorigenic A. radiobacter on raspberry in Serbia.
Morphological and Molecular Identification of Colletotrichum acutatum from Tomato Fruit

Abstract: Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Colletotrichum acutatum, Colletotrichum coccodes, and Colletotrichum dematium are the four main species of Colletotrichum that cause tomato anthracnose. In Serbia, the occurrence of anthracnose on tomato fruit has been recorded during the last several years. Typical fruit symptoms include dark, sunken, and circular lesion with orange conidial masses. Pathogen isolates were obtained from a diseased tomato fruits, on PDA medium forming a white to gray colonies. The cultures developed black acervuli around the center of the colony. Conidia were hyaline, aseptate, and fusiform or rarely cylindrical. Appressoria were smooth, simple, clavate to ovate, and variedfrom light to dark brown. Pathogenicity tests with representative isolates were conducted on symptomless, detached tomato fruits. All tested isolates caused anthracnose lesions on tomato fruit after 7 days of incubation. Koch’s postulates were fulfilled by reisolationfrom inoculated tomato fruits. PCR analysis (using species-specific primer pair, CaInt2/ITS4) of genomic DNA from tomato isolates resulted in an amplification product of 490 bp, specific for C. acutatum, further confirming the identity of the pathogen. Based onmorphological and molecular characteristics, the isolates from tomato fruit were determined as C. acutatum.
Behavioral-Cognitive Inhibition Theory: Conceptualization of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Other Psychopathology Disorders  [PDF]

Abstract: A comprehensive and behaviorally formulated theory for psychopathology disorders termed as behavioral-cog- nitive inhibition theory is presented. It constitutes an integration and re-formulation of several influential psy- chological theories of psychopathology and empirical findings in imagery research. According to the behavioral-cognitive inhibition theory the development of PTSD and other psychopathology disorders are due to the development of dysfunctional respondent-functional-appraisal memories. The maintenance of psychopathology disorders is due to a continuous retrieval of dysfunctional respondent-functional-appraisal memories, to inhibit- tion of incompatible respondent-functional-appraisal memories, and to current dysfunctional appraisals and behaviors. Dysfunctional and incompatible respondent-functional-appraisal memories consist of respondent, discriminative, behavioral response, appraisal and consequence memory elements. It is proposed that the recovery from PTSD and other psychopathology disorders is accomplished when (a) strong enough matching incompatible respondent-functional-appraisal memories are retrieved in the same circumstances as dysfunctional respondent-functional-appraisal memories, (b) dysfunctional respondent-functional-appraisal memories become inhibited by incompatible respondent-functional-appraisal memories, and (c) new incompatible or functional contingencies are encoded, stored and become effective incompatible respondent-functional-appraisal memories. Concrete examples of respondent-functional-appraisal memory elements in emotional and personality disorders are presented. In addition, incompatible respondent-functional-appraisal memory elements are presented. Fur- thermore, central hypotheses of the behavioral-cognitive inhibition theory are formulated and important issues are discussed.
Exposure Inhibition Therapy as a Treatment for Chronic Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Controlled Pilot Study  [PDF]

Abstract: Exposure inhibition therapy as a treatment for chronic posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is evaluated in a randomized treatment outcome pilot study. The exposure inhibition therapy is based on crucial parts of the behavioral-cognitive inhibition theory (Paunovi?, 2010). In this treatment primary incompatible respondent memories are utilized in order to 1) directly counter numbing and depressive symptoms, 2) incorporate the primary trauma memory into primary incompatible memories, and 3) inhibit primary respondent trauma memories. Twenty-nine crime victims with chronic PTSD were randomized to a group that received exposure inhibition therapy immediately (N = 14), or a wait-list control group (N = 15) that waited for 2.5 months and then received the treatment. The group that first received treatment improved significantly on PTSD symptoms, (CAPS, IES-R, PCL) depression (BDI), anxiety (BAI), posttraumatic cognitions of self, others and guilt (PTCI), and coping self-efficacy (CES) compared to the wait-list control group. The treatment efficacy was high for PTSD symptoms, depressive and anxiety symptoms, as well as on most cognitive measures. When the wait-list control group received treatment similar results were observed. Results were maintained at a 3-months follow-up in the treatment group, and on some measures improvement continued. Three empirically derived cut-off criteria (44, 39 27) were used for the CAPS, and one cut-off level for the BDI (10), in order to assess the clinical significance of the results. The majority of clients no longer fulfilled PTSD as a result of the treatment regardless of the level of cut-off criteria, and similar results were observed on the BDI. In conclusion, exposure inhibition therapy was an effective treatment for chronic PTSD in this study. A proposal is made to compare exposure inhibition therapy with the state-of-the-art therapy for chronic PTSD, i.e. exposure therapy. Several hypotheses are presented; e.g. that exposure inhibition therapy may be more effective for some symptoms, and involving less emotional pain in the therapeutic process.

Abstract: The need for planning, as a process through which the future can be influenced to a certain extent, gave a new form of this activity, that has characteristics of generalization, flexibility and adaptability in time and in space which it refers to. That is strategic planning, which tends to coordinate the variety of development components and has for its aim successful implementation based on planning objectives. In the practice of spatial planning in Serbia, important differences can be recognized in perception of the term "strategy" as a planning document, and in consequence differences in perception of its form, content and aim. In that sense, this paper is dedicated to the interpretation of different approaches in strategic spatial planning in Serbia and it points out strengths and weaknesses of those approaches.
Conceptualization of Hypersexual Disorder with the Behavioral-Cognitive Inhibition Theory  [PDF]

Abstract:

Hypersexual disorder is conceptualized with the behavioral-cognitive inhibition (BCI) theory. The current article focuses on the following aspects: (a) triggers of dysfunctional sexual behaviors and fantasies, (b) dysfunctional beliefs of excessive sexual behaviors and fantasies, (c) negative interpretations of triggers of sexual behaviors and fantasies, (d) excessive sexual behaviors and fantasies as avoidance behaviors, (e) consequences of excessive sexual behaviors and fantasies vs. healthy coping strategies, (f) sexual behaviors as inhibitors of distressing memories associated with negative beliefs, (g) sexual fantasies and other valued memories as inhibitors of dysfunctional memories associated with negative beliefs, and (h) behavioral activation of valued activities as inhibitors of sexual behaviors and distressing memories. Some important issues are discussed.
