Abstract: Investigaciones brasile as acerca de los factores determinantes para el éxito de programas de formación de lectores se alan la necesidad del empleo de la literatura como objeto estético para que el ni o se aproxime al libro. Esta investigación se propuso estudiar las concepciones de los profesores acerca de la literatura a partir del punto de vista del lector infantil. Se utilizó el chat como mecanismo de recolección de datos, propuesto entre dos clases de la ense anza fundamental, y entrevistas con las profesoras regentes. El análisis de los chats siguió la metodología de Franco (1997), evidenciando que los docentes no consideran al libro como un objeto estético que necesita ser disfrutado. Esta investigación se ala tres ejes básicos para la conquista de un público lector: a) recursos humanos calificados con claridad acerca de la concepción de literatura como fenómeno estético; b) procedimientos metodológicos coherentes con esa concepción; c) acervo bibliográfico ajustado a esa concepción. Brazilian research on the determining factors for the success of programs to teach reading indicates a need to view literature as an aesthetic object that will encourage children to appreciate books. This study proposes investigating teachers' concepts of literature, from the point of view of the children. Chat was used as a data collection mechanism, proposed between two groups of elementary school children and interviews with the teachers. The analysis of the chats followed the methodology of Franco (1997). This study indicates three key areas for winning a reading public: a) qualified human resources, with a clear concept of literature as an aesthetic phenomenon; b) methodological procedures that are coherent with this concept; c) a bibliographical archive that is aligned with this concept.
Generation of Single, Monodisperse Compound Droplets

Abstract: The generation of single, monodisperse compound droplets is shown in these fluid dynamics videos. In an apparatus designed to produce single compound droplets, a piezoelectric diaphragm generates a pressure pulse from a voltage waveform input to eject a droplet. In the method presented, oil is allowed to flow into the water nozzle with the pressure pulse ejecting both fluids as a compound droplet. Experiments were performed to demonstrate how changes in water pressure affect compound droplet compositions. It was found that increasing the water pressure decreased the thickness of the compound droplet's oil layer.

Abstract: Fanconi anaemia (FA) is an inherited disease with congenital and developmental abnormalities, bone marrow failure, and extreme risk of leukemic transformation. Bone marrow surveillance is an important part of the clinical management of FA and often reveals cytogenetic aberrations. Here, we review bone marrow findings in FA and discuss the clinical and biological implications of chromosomal aberrations associated with leukemic transformation.

Abstract: We develop sufficient optimality conditions for a Moreau-Yosidaregularized optimal control problem governed by a semilinear ellipticPDE with pointwise constraints on the state and the control. We makeuse of the equivalence of a setting of Moreau-Yosida regularization to a special setting of the virtual control concept,for which standard second order sufficient conditions have been shown. Moreover, we present a numerical example,solving a Moreau-Yosida regularized model problem with an SQP method.
QF-PCR as a molecular-based method for autosomal aneuploidies detection  [PDF]

Abstract: Objectives: The currently available methods for rapid prenatal diagnosis of common chromosomal aneuploidies are either Interphase-Fluorescence in Situ Hybridisation (I-FISH) or Quanti- tative Fluorescent Polymerase Chain Reaction (QF-PCR). QF-PCR represents a rapid, high throughput, cost-effective alternative for Interphase-FISH. The objective of the study was to evaluate the performance of QF-PCR, as a molecular-based technique for the detection of chromosome 21, 18 and 13 copy numbers. Study design: A retrospective cohort of 163 samples referred for screening of common chromosomal aneuploidies was blindly tested for chromosome 21, 18 and 13 copy numbers using QF-PCR and the results were compared with those of conventional cytogenetic analysis. Results: QF-PCR demonstrated optimal sensitivity and specificity (100%) for non mosaic trisomies. QF-PCR was able to consistently detect maternal cell contamination and mosaic trisomies when the trisomic cell line was present at an adequate level (23% or more). However, QF-PCR was unable to detect chromosomal rearrangements for which the primers were not designed. Conclusion: QF- PCR proved its superior performance as a molecular-based method for autosomal aneuploidy detection concerning both sensitivity and specificity.

Here, we review bone marrow findings in FA and discuss the clinical and biological implications of chromosomal aberrations associated with leukemic transformation. 1. Introduction Fanconi anemia (FA) is an inherited disease with bone marrow failure, variable congenital and developmental abnormalities, and extreme cancer predisposition. The most common malignancies in FA are myeloid leukemia and squamous cell carcinoma. On a cellular level, FA is characterized by chromosomal instability and cross-linker sensitivity, which is the diagnostic hallmark of FA. For diagnostic testing, this is determined by demonstration of hypersensitivity to mitomycin C (MMC) or diepoxybutane (DEB) of patient derived peripheral blood cells or fibroblasts [1–3]. FA cells also display hypersensitivity to proapoptotic stimuli of certain cytokines, such as TNF-α and IFN-γ, which has been implicated in haematological manifestations of FA [4–6]. Cell cycle analysis of FA cells shows a characteristic arrest in the G2 phase, which is exacerbated by exposure to MMC [7–9]. This clinical and cellular phenotype results from a defect in a DNA damage response (DDR) pathway (FA/BRCA pathway), in which FA and associated proteins interact. So far, 15 FA genes (FANCA, FANCB, FANCC, FANCD1/BRCA2, FANCD2, FANCE, FANCF, FANCG, FANCI, FANCJ, FANCL, FANCM, FANCN/PALPB2, FANCO/RAD51C, and FANCP/SLX4) have been identified that can be mutated in FA [2, 10–12], of which FANCA, FANCG, and FANCC are the most commonly mutated genes in studied FA populations [2]. Importantly, the discovery that mutations in BRCA2 causes FA in the subgroup FA-D1, which comprises less than 5% of all FA patients, linked the FA DNA damage response pathway to hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) [13, 14]. Hematopoiesis in the bone marrow (BM) is the most commonly affected organ system in FA, and most FA patients will develop clinically relevant hematological complications in their first or second decades of life [15]. BM complications of FA can manifest with hypoplasia, often initially being limited to thrombocytopenia in peripheral blood counts, or general aplasia. Abstract: El artículo presenta los resultados de unade las etapas de la investigación titulada: Autores, obras e acervos literários catarinenses em meio digital, en colaboración con veintidós docentes del sistema educativo de Santa Catarina, Joinville (Brasil). El objetivo del proyecto fue indagar sobre los posibles usos en la clase de textospublicados en medios electrónicos, para ampliar las prácticas de lectura. La metodología seguida fue un curso dado a los docentes de Lengua y Literatura portuguesa de escuelas estatales de Joinville, estructurado en torno a la exploración de la biblioteca digital Nupill y el cd producido por el mismo grupo: “Relógio de Ouro –Machado de Assis”. En este artículo proponemos examinar algunas de las posibilidades pedagógicas de estos materiales y discutir algunas de las estrategias de ense anza empleadas por los docentes con sus estudiantes de escuela media, las que fueron estructuradas en tres ejes: lectura, investigación y producción.
Modifying Cadzow's algorithm to generate the optimal TLS-solution for the structured EIV-Model of a similarity transformation

Abstract: In 2005, Felus and Schaffrin discussed the problem of a Structured Errors-in-Variables (EIV) Model in the context of a parameter adjustment for a classical similarity transformation. Their proposal, however, to perform a Total Least-Squares (TLS) adjustment, followed by a Cadzow step to imprint the proper structure, would not always guarantee the identity of this solution with the optimal Structured TLS solution, particularly in view of the residuals. Here, an attempt will be made to modify the Cadzow step in order to generate the optimal solution with the desired structure as it would, for instance, also result from a traditional LS-adjustment within an iteratively linearized Gauss-Helmert Model (GHM). Incidentally, this solution coincides with the (properly) Weighted TLS solution which does not need a Cadzow step.

Abstract: Neste artigo a habilidade das redes neurais perceptron multicamada eminterpolar foi utilizada para analisar duas classes de problemas de contorno. A primeira classe é formada por equa es diferenciais em que a solu o pode apresentar gradientes elevados e a segunda classe é formada de equa es diferenciais definidas em domínios arbitrários. As metodologias propostas por Lagaris et al. (1998) foram estendidas para casos de equa es diferenciais sujeitas às condi es de Cauchy e condi es de contorno mistas. Os resultados fornecidos pelo método da rede neural se apresentam precisos quando comparados com os resultados analíticos ou por métodos numéricos de resolu o deequa es diferenciais. A precis o alcan ada nos resultados e a facilidade no manuseio do método para resolver estes problemas de contorno encorajaram a continuidade da pesquisa, particularmente no tocante à convergência e estabilidade numérica. In this paper, the ability of the multilayer perceptron neural network (MLP) in interpolation was used to analyze two classes of boundary value problems. The first class is formed by differential equations, with solutions which can have high gradients and the second are partial differential equations, defined on arbitrary shaped domain. Also, the methodologies proposed by Lagaris et al. (1998) were enlarged for differential equations subjected to Cauchy and mix boundary conditions type. The results of the artificial neural network method are very precise when comparison to the analytical ones or those of classical numerical methods to solve differential equations. The precision achieved in the results and the ability to handle the method, to solve those boundary value problems, were encouraging to keep the research, particularly on an important direction, concerning convergence and numerical stability.
