Hidden markov model for the prediction of transmembrane proteins using MATLAB

Abstract: Since membranous proteins play a key role in drug targeting therefore transmembrane proteins prediction is active and challenging area of biological sciences. Location based prediction of transmembrane proteins are significant for functional annotation of protein sequences. Hidden markov model based method was widely applied for transmembrane topology prediction. Here we have presented a revised and a better understanding model than an existing one for transmembrane protein prediction. Scripting on MATLAB was built and compiled for parameter estimation of model and applied this model on amino acid sequence to know the transmembrane and its adjacent locations. Estimated model of transmembrane topology was based on TMHMM model architecture. Only 7 super states are defined in the given dataset, which were converted to 96 states on the basis of their length in sequence. Accuracy of the prediction of model was observed about 74 %, is a good enough in the area of transmembrane topology prediction. Therefore we have concluded the hidden markov model plays crucial role in transmembrane helices prediction on MATLAB platform and it could also be useful for drug discovery strategy.
Studies on Chromate Removal by Chromium-Resistant Bacillus sp. Isolated from Tannery Effluent  [PDF]

Abstract: A chromate-removing strain was isolated from spent chrome effluent and identified as Bacillus circulans strain MN1. The isolated strain was studied for resistance to Cr (VI) and its ability to remove Cr (VI). The strain was found to tolerate Cr (VI) concentration as high as 4500 mg/L, but the cells growth was heavily influenced when initial Cr (VI) concentration was increased between 1110 mg/L and 4500 mg/L while Cr(VI) at 500 mg/L to 1110 mg/L did not suppressed the cells growth. The experiments also demonstrated that the cells removed toxic Cr (VI) more efficiently at 30?C compared with that at 25?C and 35?C. The optimum initial pH for Cr (VI) removal was 5.6 and final pH values of 5.1-5.6 were observed for initial pH 5.2-5.7.

Abstract: History of breast cancer dates back to at least 1600 B.C. and treatment methods have undergone significant progress over the last hundred years. We are moving away from frighteningly radical, and towards increasingly more conservational breast cancer surgery. And while mastectomy is no longer a first-line choice for all breast cancers, it is still an important and, really, an essential procedure to discuss and research about. Different types and techniques exist and evidence regarding each is vast-with novel techniques appearing even nowadays. For example, robotic surgery is increasingly more common in many surgical specialties and procedures, and mastectomy is no exception. With several high-profile celebrities recently discussing their experiences of breast cancer and mastectomies, this article covers a multitude of essential aspects relevant to this topic, in turn, hopefully, helping patients and doctors deal with the diagnosis and plan the treatment accordingly. Current breast cancer care and mastectomy trends are also discussed here, giving the readers an up-to-date overview of how breast cancer can and should be managed.
Postoperative pain and its management

Abstract: Postoperative pain is both distressing and detrimental for the patient. The management of postoperative pain involves assessment of the pain in terms of intensity at rest and activity associated pain, treatment by pharmacological and non pharmacological means as well as monitoring induced side-effects. Besides being physically and emotionally disabling, the pain is associated with various physiological effects involving the increased perioperative stress response. The pain causes the patient to remain immobile, thus becoming vulnerable to DVT, pulmonary atelectasis, muscle wasting and urinary retention. Poor control of postoperative pain could be due to various reasons which may include uniformed prescribing without taking into consideration the individual patient′s physical status, the surgery that has been performed or the site and intensity of pain. Besides, the poor compliance of orders in administrating the analgesics prescribed and the fact that optimal pain relief is not aimed for may also contribute to the inadequate management of the pain occurring in the postoperative period. Thus, despite all efforts, there continues to be inadequate pain relief in a large majority of patients. The introduction of multimodal analgesia including opioids and non-opioids, delivered through various routes, neuraxial use of local anesthetics, either alone or in combination with other drugs, nerve blocks, antihyperalgesics and techniques such as patient controlled analgesia and pre-emptive analgesia have greatly improved the efficacy of pain-control while minimizing the side-effects of any one modality. The recent recommendation of planning the pain services in an organized manner and implementation of Acute Pain Services (APS) has proven to be beneficial and rewarding.

Abstract: Electric Fans are very commonly used in the industries, domestic applications and in tunnels for cooling and ventila-tion purposes. Fan parameters estimation is an important task as far as the reliable operation of a fan system is con-cerned. Basically, a fan is mainly consisting of a single phase induction motor and therefore fan system parameters are essentially the electrical parameters e.g. resistances, reactances and some load parameters (fan blades).These parame-ters often change under varying operating conditions and the knowledge of these parameters is necessary to have opti-mum and efficient operation of the system. Therefore, fan system parameters are required to be estimated. Further, fan system parameters estimation is required to ensure the smooth system operation and to avoid any malfunctioning of the system during abnormal working conditions. In this paper, Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) approach has been used for parameter estimation of a fan system. The simulated and experimental results are compared.
Inhibitory Response of Raphanus sativus on Lipid Peroxidation in Albino Rats

Abstract: In the present study, inhibitory effect of the methanol extract of Raphanus sativus root on lipid peroxidation has been carried out in normal rats. Graded doses of methanol extract of root of the plant (40, 80 and 120 mg kg−1 body weight) were administered orally for 15 days to experimental treated rats. Distilled water was administered to experimental control rats. At the end of experiment, rats were killed by decapitation after ether anesthesia. Blood and liver were collected to measure thiobarbituric acid reactive substance, reduced glutathione and activity of catalase. Results indicated that the extract of R. sativus root reduced the levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substance significantly in all experimental treated groups (P < 0.05) as compared to the experimental control group. It also increased the levels of reduced glutathione and increased the activity of catalase. In vitro experiments with the liver of experimental control and experimental treated rats were also carried out against cumene hydroperoxide induced lipid peroxidation. The extract inhibited in vitro cumene hydroperoxide induced lipid peroxidation. R. sativus inhibits lipid peroxidation in vivo and in vitro. It provides protection by strengthening the antioxidants like glutathione and catalase. Inclusion of this plant in every day diet would be beneficial.
Safety and diagnostic value of medical arthroscopy: retrospective analysis of 100 medical arthroscopies performed by a rheumatologist

Abstract: To evaluate the safety and diagnostic value of medical arthroscopy performed by a rheumatologist.Decisions for performing arthroscopy were taken when a detailed clinical history and relevant rheumatological investigations failed to arrive at a definite diagnosis. Initial assessment included detailed clinical history and relevant diagnostic tests for rheumatic diseases. Routine blood count, bleeding time, clotting time and biochemical parameters were also determined. After obtaining written consent, arthroscopies were performed as an outpatient department procedure using a 4 mm arthroscope with 0° and 30° viewing. All the procedures of arthroscopy were performed by a single rheumatologist. Procedures were done in a minor operating theatre under local anesthesia using strict aseptic precautions. Xylocaine 2% and bupivacaine 0.5% were used as local anesthetic agents for skin portal and intraarticular anesthesia, respectively. A tourniquet was not used during the procedures and the skin portal was not stitched. Synovial biopsies taken during procedures were subjected to only histopathological examination. All the procedures were recorded on a video-cassette.See Tables 1 and 2. None of the patients developed any complications during the procedure or after 6 months of follow-up. None of the patients experienced any discomfort during the procedure except for a mild stretching sensation experienced by male patients. Females tolerated the procedure better than males.Arthroscopy using a 4 mm scope in the hands of rheumatologists is a safe daycare procedure. It can be performed without a tourniquet. The local anesthetic agent bupivacaine provides an excellent local anesthesia. Females tolerate the procedure better than males. In a few cases arthroscopy helped in arriving at a final diagnosis but many patients remained undiagnosed. Both the rheumatologists and the pathologists require further experience in this field.

A Survey of Routing Protocols for Ad Hoc Wireless Home Networks

Abstract: Ad hoc networks are wireless mobile networks that do not rely on preexisting infrastructure and these networks allow a more flexible model of communication than traditional networks since the user is not limited to a fixed physical location. In order to facilitate communication within the network, a routing protocol is used to discover routes between nodes. The primary goal of such an ad hoc network routing protocol is correct and efficient route establishment between a pair of nodes so that messages may be delivered in a timely manner. Route construction should be done with a minimum of overhead and bandwidth consumption. In this paper, we present routing protocols designed for these ad hoc networks by describing the operation of each of the protocols. The remainder of the paper is organized as follows. The next section presents a discussion of two subdivisions of ad hoc routing protocols. Another section discusses current table driven protocols, while a later section describes those protocols which are classified as ondemand. The paper then presents qualitative comparisons of table-driven protocols, followed by demand-driven and on-demand protocols; and finally, the last section concludes the paper.
