Non-stimulating tradition: The Effect of Temperament on Painting Art Preferences

Abstract: This study examined the effect of temperament on preferences for painted artwork. Our preferences are determined by different personality traits. The study presented here was a replication of the current study of Terror Management Theory (TMT) with the structures of temperament as individual differences. The results showed significant differences in preferences for traditional and modern art, depending on the degree of harmonization of the temperamental structures. Sanguines and melancholics in the no fear condition evaluated modern art most highly, however in the fear condition they evaluated traditional art most highly. This effect confirms the importance of individual differences and the situational variability of preferences in art.

Abstract: This paper is devoted to the autonomous Lagrange problem of the calculus of variations with a discontinuous Lagrangian. We prove that every minimizer is Lipschitz continuous if the Lagrangian is coercive and locally bounded. The main difference with respect to the previous works in the literature is that we do not assume that the Lagrangian is convex in the velocity. We also show that, under some additional assumptions, the DuBois-Reymond necessary condition still holds in the discontinuous case. Finally, we apply these results to deduce that the value function of the Bolza problem is locally Lipschitz and satisfies (in a generalized sense) a Hamilton-Jacobi equation.
Value Functions for Bolza Problems with Discontinuous Lagrangians and Hamilton-Jacobi Inequalities

Abstract: We investigate the value function of the Bolza problem of the Calculus of Variations $$ V (t,x)=\inf \{\int_{0}^{t} L (y(s),y'(s))ds + \phi(y(t)) : y \in W^{1,1} (0,t; R^n) ; y(0)=x \}, $$ with a lower semicontinuous Lagrangian $L$ and a final cost $\phi$, and show that it is locally Lipschitz for $t>0$ whenever $L$ is locally bounded. It also satisfies Hamilton-Jacobi inequalities in a generalized sense. When the Lagrangian is continuous, then the value function is the unique lower semicontinuous solution to the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi equation, while for discontinuous Lagrangian we characterize the value function by using the so called contingent inequalities.
Uniqueness of solutions to Hamilton-Jacobi equations arising in the Calculus of Variations

Abstract: We prove the uniqueness of the viscosity solution to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation associated with a Bolza problem of the Calculus of Variations, assuming that the Lagrangian is autonomous, continuous, superlinear, and satisfies the usual convexity hypothesis. Under the same assumptions we prove also the uniqueness, in a class of lower semicontinuous functions, of a slightly different notion of solution, where classical derivatives are replaced only by subdifferentials. These results follow from a new comparison theorem for lower semicontinuous viscosity supersolutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation, that is proved in the general case of lower semicontinuous Lagrangians.
Sensitivity relations for the Mayer problem with differential inclusions

Abstract: In optimal control,sensitivity relations are usually understood as inclusions that identify the pair formed by the dual arc and the Hamiltonian, evaluated along the associated minimizing trajectory, as a suitable generalized gradient of the value function. In this paper, sensitivity relations are obtained for the Mayer problem associated with the differential inclusion $\dot x\in F(x)$ and applied to derive optimality conditions. Our first application concerns the maximum principle and consists in showing that a dual arc can be constructed for every element of the superdifferential of the final cost. As our second application, with every nonzero limiting gradient of the value function at some point $(t,x)$ we associate a family of optimal trajectories at $(t,x)$ with the property that families corresponding to distinct limiting gradients have empty intersection.
Effect of Stacking Fault Energy on the Mechanism of Texture Formation during Alternating Bending of FCC Metals and Alloys  [PDF]

Abstract:

Alternating bending shear stresses lead to the formation of twin orientations in the texture of FCC materials with middle and low stacking fault energy (SFE). Only in the stainless steel with a low SFE during alternating bending with different number of cycles components of shear texture {111}; {hkl}<110>; {001}<110> were formed. Copper (middle SFE), along with orientations of twinning and cubic texture formed orientation of deformation {135}<211>. During alternating bending of aluminum (high SFE), a dynamic recovery occurred. The share of initial cubic texture increases with the increase of number of cycles of alternating bending and reaches its maximum after three cycles. Share of component of texture Goss increased slightly. The most significant change of the microstructure and texture occurred during the first 3 - 5 cycles

Pseudo Jahn-Teller Effect in Puckering and Planarization of Heterocyclic Compounds  [PDF]

Abstract: The goal of this brief partly review paper is to summarize the results of the works published over the last few years regarding the origin of the out-of-plane distortions (puckering) of heterocyclic compounds. In all the papers devoted to this problem, it is shown that the instability of planar configurations of heterocyclic molecules leading to symmetry breaking and distortions is induced by the pseudo Jahn-Teller effect (PJTE). Special attention in this work is paid to the mechanism of suppression and enhancement of the PJTE distortions of heterocycles by oxidation, reduction, and chemical substitutions. It is demonstrated that oxidation of 1,4-dithiine containing compounds leads to suppression of the PJTE and to restoration of their planar nuclear configurations. An example of a dibenzo[1,2]dithiine molecule is used to demonstrate the mechanism of enhancement of the PJTE by reduction. It is shown that the reduction of the neutral C12H8S2 molecule up to the dianion (C12H8S2)2- enhances the PJTE, followed by the S-S bond cleavage and significant structural distortions of the system. The change of the PJTE by chemical substitutions, accompanied either by puckering or by planarization of heterocyclic compounds, is discussed using as examples 1,4-ditinine and its S-oxygenated derivatives.
Infection cases in infants and small children with atopic dermatitis – own observations

Abstract: Introduction:The purpose of the work is to estimate the frequency of occurrence of various infections in infants and small children, aged between 0 and 36 months with atopic dermatitis in the practice of a family doctor.Material/Methods:The study has been conducted on the basis of the retrospective analysis of medical documentation of disease among children born in 2005–2008 treated in Outpatient Clinic of the Polish Mother’s Memorial Hospital in Lodz.Results:Children suffering from atopic dermatitis are more prone to develop infectious diseases.Conclusions:Infectious diseases in children with atopic dermatitis are of more chronic nature and more often require antibiotic therapy. Such children often manifest chronic diarrhea and their stool contains Staphylococcus aureus. They are more often hospitalized because of difficulty in setting a diagnosis and applying treatment in outpatient clinics.

Abstract: Since allergic diseases are more and more common nowadays, they are a very important clinical problem. The effective treatment of these diseases in childhood may contribute to decreasing diseases at a later time. The role of general practitioners in diagnosing atopic dermatitis is extremely significant, because they are the first who examine children with atopic lesions. They ought to educate parents about the basic knowledge, identification and elimination contributing factors of atopic dermatitis and systematically control children's health. The treatment should be based on the close cooperation of general practitioners, paediatricians, allergologists and dermatologists because atopic dermatitis may be the starting point of chronic disease process.
