Abstract: his interpretation of “Ideias íntimas”, a poem from the book Lira dos vinte anos, from álvares de Azevedo, proposes to investigate the elements that give a dramatic course to the text, considering the well-known approximation of the poet to the preface Do grotesco e do sublime, from Victor Hugo, which debates, besides aesthetic categories, the ideal dramatic conception from the romantic point of view, besides the pathos present in the poem and the movement of the character by the house and his feelings for objects. Based on Cilaine Alves’ interpretation which considers the poem as a “miscellaneous poem”, a mixture of literary styles, and on Camilo’s interpretation which considers the text as meditative, our interpretation considers the poem as a revision of many poetic postures and the search of the poet for a unique posture which legitimates the poetry in the XIX century, configuring, in this way, a short “drama”.

Abstract: Insects of the genus Sitophilus are among the most destructive pests in rice storage, and the best strategy to control it is to use resistant genotypes. In this study, 26 upland rice elite lines were evaluated for Sitophilus weevil reaction on grain weight. The seeds were placed in plastic recipients stored in a room with temperature and lightning simulating a warehouse environment. The number of living weevils and the grain weight were obtained in two evaluations, one 35 days after storage, and the other 35 days after infestation. The lines differed statistically for number of living weevils and for grain weight in both evaluations. The correlations between these two characters were -?0.99 and -?0.47 for the first and the second evaluation (P < 0.05), respectively. The lines BRS Pepita, AB 112089 and AB 112090 were the most susceptible. Seventeen of the twenty-six elite lines were resistant in both evaluations and could be successfully used in upland rice breeding programs.

Abstract: The records of 1153 dogs that underwent inhalant general anesthesia at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of S o Paulo State University (UNESP, Campus of Jaboticabal, S o Paulo, Brazil) from July 2000 until January 2003 were reviewed. We aimed at determining the mortality and morbidity rates, as well as their correlation with inhalation agents used for anesthetic maintenance, and the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification of the patients. The overall morbidity rate was 9.19%, whereas mortality rate was 1.13%. Although the data analysis showed the occurrence of complications and death in patients initially thought to be risk free and in patients where safe anesthetic agents were used, no statistical correlation was determined to exist between morbidity or mortality and either the ASA classification of the animals or the anesthetic agent.

Abstract: Background Neuromuscular electrostimulation has become a promising issue in cardiovascular rehabilitation. However there are few articles published in the literature regarding neuromuscular electrostimulation in patients with heart failure during hospital stay. Methods This is a randomized controlled pilot trial that aimed to investigate the effect of neuromuscular electrostimulation in the walked distance by the six-minute walking test in 30 patients admitted to ward for heart failure treatment in a tertiary cardiology hospital. Patients in the intervention group performed a conventional rehabilitation and neuromuscular electrostimulation. Patients underwent 60 minutes of electrostimulation (wave frequency was 20 Hz, pulse duration of 20 us) two times a day for consecutive days until hospital discharge. Results The walked distance in the six-minute walking test improved 75% in the electrostimulation group (from 379.7 ± 43.5 to 372.9 ± 46.9 meters to controls and from 372.9 ± 62.4 to 500 ± 68 meters to electrostimulation, p<0.001). On the other hand, the walked distance in the control group did not change. Conclusion The neuromuscular electrostimulation group showed greater improvement in the walked distance in the six-minute walking test in patients admitted to ward for compensation of heart failure.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the equations adopted by the nrc and detmann to estimate the energy content of agricultural and agroindustrial byproducts. it was evaluated byproducts of pineapple, cocoa, palm oil, beans, sunflower, guava, cassava bark, cassava stem, raw cassava, papaya, mango, passion fruit, turnip and corn gluten meal. all animals received corn silage and the mixture urea/ammonium sulfate (9:1) so rations with the two levels of each byproduct remained isonitrogenous. among the models for digestible crude protein prediction (cpad), detmann 2 model presented difference by the hypotheses test for joint null while estimates by the nrc and detmann 1 models were similar to those obtained by in vivo observations. for digestible ether extract (eead), digestible non-fibrous carbohydrates (nfcad) and digestible neutral detergent fiber (ndfd), the estimates obtained by the model proposed by the nrc differed, by the test of significance of hypotheses of joint null, to in vitro observations and the best adjustment was obtained by the model suggested by detmann, having as a consequence, the value. however, among all the digestible fractions, ndfd presented the greatest dispersion of points regarded to equality line. nrc and detmann models can be considered as efficient in predicting total digestible nutrients (tdn) and digestible energy (de) because the estimates do not differ from the observed values, however they also present great dispersion of the points regarded to equality line. it is recommended to use the models proposed by detmann for predicting digestible fractions of crude protein, ether extract and non fibrous carbohydrates on agriculture and agroindustrial byproducts.

Abstract: it was evaluated in this work the effects of levels of inclusion and exposure times of sugarcane to calcium oxide on the performance of nellore heifers, digestibility of dietary components and synthesis of ruminal microbial protein and it was compared titanium dioxide to chromium oxide to estimate the individual intake of concentrate. it was used 30 nellore females at approximately 24 months of age and average body weight of 285 ± 31 kg and age of 24 months housed in six pens (50 m2 approximately), each one of them with five animals (feeding group). the diets were allocated in a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement, containing three levels of calcium oxide (0; 0.5 and 1.0% of sugarcane fresh matter) and two levels of exposure time (0 and 3 days). there were no effects of calcium oxide exposure time on the intake of microbial nitrogen, dry matter (dm), organic matter (om), crude protein (cp) and total digestible nutrients (tdn) and daily weight gain, but, it affected the intake of ether extract (ee), neutral detergent fiber corrected for ash and cp contamination (ndfcp), and nonfiber carbohydrate (nfc). the levels of whitewash decreased linearly the intake of om, ndfap, nfc, and adg. however, it was not observed effects of the markers (titanium dioxide and chromic oxide) nor interactions among exposure time and level of whitewash on intakes of dm, cp, ee, ndfap, nfc and tdn. significant interactions between exposure time and level of inclusion of whitewash were observed for total aparent digestibility of dm, om, and ndf and for content of tdn. titanium oxide and chromic oxide are equally effective for estimating individual intakes of concentrate by bovine fed in group. supply of sugar cane stored for three days without whitewash does not change performance of growing heifers.

Abstract: Heme is a ubiquitous molecule that has a number of physiological roles. The toxic effects of this molecule have been demonstrated in various models, based on both its pro-oxidant nature and through a detergent mechanism. It is estimated that about 10 mM of heme is released during blood digestion in the blood-sucking bug's midgut. The parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, the agent of Chagas' disease, proliferates in the midgut of the insect vector; however, heme metabolism in trypanosomatids remains to be elucidated. Here we provide a mechanistic explanation for the proliferative effects of heme on trypanosomatids. Heme, but not other porphyrins, induced T. cruzi proliferation, and this phenomenon was accompanied by a marked increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation in epimastigotes when monitored by ROS-sensitive fluorescent probes. Heme-induced ROS production was time-and concentration-dependent. In addition, lipid peroxidation and the formation of 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (4-HNE) adducts with parasite proteins were increased in epimastigotes in the presence of heme. Conversely, the antioxidants urate and GSH reversed the heme-induced ROS. Urate also decreased parasite proliferation. Among several protein kinase inhibitors tested only specific inhibitors of CaMKII, KN93 and Myr-AIP, were able to abolish heme-induced ROS formation in epimastigotes leading to parasite growth impairment. Taken together, these data provide new insight into T. cruzi- insect vector interactions: heme, a molecule from the blood digestion, triggers epimastigote proliferation through a redox-sensitive signalling mechanism.

Einstein (S?o Paulo) , 2010,
Abstract: Objective: To identify the concept of humanization and raise aspects that contribute towards and that hinder humanization of hospital care, according to the opinion of oncology patients. Methods: This is a descriptive-exploratory survey, with a qualitative-quantitative approach. The sample was made up of 10 patients hospitalized for more than 30 days at the Oncology Unit of Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, who, after satisfying ethical and legal procedures, were interviewed and answered three questions in reference to humanization in oncology. Results: The factors that contributed more towards humanization were warmth in giving care, friendliness, and smiles, and the factors that hindered it were bad moods, noise, and not being promptly attended. Conclusions: Hospital humanization should be experienced and felt by all those who work at hospital and needs to be reflected in the care offered to the client and his/her family members. These aspects become vital in oncology in order to understand the difficult period the patient is going through during the hospital stay, showing an interest in his/her problems and struggles with an attitude of empathy and cordiality, always acting ethically and with professional responsibility.
