Blood and other substances: new reproductive technologies and adoption in popular groups in southern Brazil
Nascimento, Pedro;
Vibrant: Virtual Brazilian Anthropology , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1809-43412011000200012
Abstract: based on ethnographic research in a public hospital that offers assisted reproduction services and in low income communities in the city of porto alegre, in southern brazil, this article focuses on cases in which the use of conceptive reproductive technologies for couples is related to the type of relationship established with public health services. the paper also discusses how the fact that people seek medical attention does not invalidate adoption as a way of establishing kinship ties. the aim is to question discourses about the spread of new reproductive technologies, which are generally based on vague definitions of what is called a desire for biological children. in addition, the article reflects on the specific nature of adoption among the working classes in the context of dissemination of such reproductive technologies.

Journal of Software Engineering and Applications (JSEA) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/jsea.2015.86029
Abstract: Important in many different sectors of the industry, the determination of stream velocity has become more and more important due to measurements precision necessity, in order to determine the right production rates, determine the volumetric production of undesired fluid, establish automated controls based on these measurements avoiding over-flooding or over-production, guaranteeing accurate predictive maintenance, etc. Difficulties being faced have been the determination of the velocity of specific fluids embedded in some others, for example, determining the gas bubbles stream velocity flowing throughout liquid fluid phase. Although different and already applicable methods have been researched and already implemented within the industry, a non-intrusive automated way of providing those stream velocities has its importance, and may have a huge impact in projects budget. Knowing the importance of its determination, this developed script uses a methodology of breaking-down real-time videos media into frame images, analyzing by pixel correlations possible superposition matches for further gas bubbles stream velocity estimation. In raw sense, the script bases itself in functions and procedures already available in MatLab, which can be used for image processing and treatments, allowing the methodology to be implemented. Its accuracy after the running test was of around 97% (ninety-seven percent); the raw source code with comments had almost 3000 (three thousand) characters; and the hardware placed for running the code was an Intel Core Duo 2.13 [Ghz] and 2 [Gb] RAM memory capable workstation. Even showing good results, it could be stated that just the end point correlations were actually getting to the final solution. So that, making use of self-learning functions or neural network, one could surely enhance the capability of the application to be run in real-time without getting exhaust by iterative loops.
Modeling Environmental Susceptibility of Municipal Solid Waste Disposal Sites: A Case Study in S?o Paulo State, Brazil  [PDF]
Victor Fernandez Nascimento, Anahi Chimini Sobral, Pedro R. Andrade, Jean Pierre Henry Balbaud Ometto, Nazli Yesiller
Journal of Geographic Information System (JGIS) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/jgis.2017.91002
Abstract: The large excess of solid waste generated in cities is a result of population growth and economic development. Properly managing this municipal solid waste (MSW) is a challenge, mainly in underdeveloped and developing countries where financial concerns are an added problem. From the environmental point of view, a major issue is properly disposing MSW taking into consideration a wide range of factors, and working with different spatial data. In this study, we used geographic information system (GIS) to perform multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) conducted by analytical hierarchy process (AHP). The development of the environmental impact susceptibility model (EISM) for municipal solid waste disposal sites (MSWDS) applied to the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil considered factors such as geology, pedology, geomorphology, water resources, and climate represented by fifteen associated sub-factors. The results indicated that more than 82% of Sao Paulo’s territory is situated in areas with very low, low, and medium environmental impact susceptibility categories. However, in the remaining 18% of the state land area, 85 landfills are located in areas with high and very high environmental impact susceptibility categories. These results are alarming because these 85 landfills receive approximately 17,886 tons of MSW on a daily basis, which corresponds to 46% of all municipal solid waste disposed in Sao Paulo state. Therefore, decision makers, urban planners and policymakers could use the findings of the EISM towards mitigating the environmental impacts caused by MSWDS.
What do general neurologists need to know about neuropathic pain?
Schestatsky, Pedro;Nascimento, Osvaldo José M.;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2009000400039
Abstract: neuropathic pain (np) is defined as pain caused by lesion or dysfunction of the somatosensory system, as a result of abnormal activation of the nociceptive pathway (small fibers and spinothalamic tracts). the most common causes of this syndrome are the following: diabetes, post-herpetic neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia, stroke, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, hiv infection, cancer. in the last few years, the np has been receiving special attention for two main reasons: (1) therapeutical refractoriness of a variety of pain syndromes with predominant neuropathic characteristics and (2) the development of diagnostic tools for neuropathic pain complaints. the present review article provides relevant information on the understanding and recognition of np, as well as evidence-based therapeutic approaches.
Licenciamento Ambiental e amplia o da cidadania: o Caso da Hidrelétrica de Tijuco Alto [Environmental Licensing and citizenship increasing: the Tijuco Alto Hydroelectric case]
Alexandre do Nascimento Souza,Pedro Roberto Jacobi
--- Environmental Licensing and citizenship increasing: the Tijuco Alto Hydroelectric case --- Abstract --- This article presents a reflection on social practices around an environmental conflict. It searches to identify and to describe the context of conflicting relations between social movement representing affected people on one side, and state-owned IBAMA (which stands for Brazilian Environment Institute) and CBA/NEC (private stakeholders) on the other, along the enduring environmental licensing process of the use of Tijuco Alto – SP hydroelectric potential. The writing is based on empirical and documental researches and has as theoretical concept the notion of Habermas’ public sector structural changes. Our hypothesis is that democratization brings to light new social actors with new demands and that the licensing processes did not keep up with the increase of the social participation turns. A gap is seen between the experience of these social actors in the political participation turns, of deliberative nature and their actual experiences in environmental licensing processes.

Souza, Pedro Caetano;Rocha, Marcos Augusto;Nascimento, Juarez Vieira do;
Revista Brasileira de Cineantropometria & Desempenho Humano , 2012, DOI: 1980-0037.2012v14n5p554
Abstract: the surf contests worldwide have presented a high and homogeneous level of performance by the athletes. thus, the hypothesis that the bottom turn (bt), curve on the base of the wave which is essential to the construction of subsequent maneuvers, might influence the results in high performance competitions. the objective of this study was to quantify the time taken in the execution of the bt by the athletes and correlate it to the scores awarded. the research sample was composed of four contests of the surfing world tour. four heats of each contest were assessed, in a total of sixteen heats studied. the analysis of each bt was performed by using the video split feature available in the sony vegas pro 10.0 software. the statistic analysis was performed with the software spss 18.0. the pearson correlation coefficient was calculated with a significance level of p<0.01. according to the correlations, there was an association between the variables for 87.5% of the cases. results show that the increase of the curve in the base of the wave (bt) can maximize the performance potential of the surfers, suggesting that bt is a fundamental technical aspect in the construction of subsequent maneuvers that suit the judging criteria of this category.

An Empirical Analysis of the Financing Policies Adopted by Brazilian Public Companies
Fernando Nascimento Oliveira,Pedro Góes Monteiro de Oliveira
Revista Brasileira de Finan?as , 2009,
Abstract: The Static Tradeoff and Pecking Order models speci ed in Shyam-Sunder and Myers (1999) were employed to analyze the nancing policies adopted by Brazilian public rms. At a rst glance, it seems that both models correctly describe the way in which rms in the sample nance their investments, although the Pecking Order model explains a greater percentage of the time series variance in the debt level. But when the power to reject the alternative hypothesis of each of the two models is considered, we conclude that the adopted policy is actually of the pecking order type. The factors that in uence the decision to issue debt or equity to nance cash de cits, for the rms in the sample, were also studied with the help of two nonlinear probability models of the “Probit” type. The results show that equity is issued when market conditions are favorable, and not only when there is a substantial risk of default, pointing to a pecking order policy of the “complex” type.
