Open Journal of Psychiatry (OJPsych) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojpsych.2013.32019
Abstract:

Orthorexia nervosa (ON) describes a fixation for proper nutrition and healthy foods that leads to die-tary restrictions and nutritional deficiencies over time. Given symptom overlap among ON, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and anorexia nervosa (AN), this study examines whether ON has a unique neuropsychological profile. Participants completed symptom checklists and neuropsychological tests chosen for their sensitivity to AN and OCD. Results showed that, across the full sample, ON is independently associated with self-reported weaknesses in Set-Shifting, Emotional Control, Self-Monitoring, and Working Memory. After controlling for AN and OCD variables, high- and low-ON groups differed in total correct trials on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. These areas of executive functioning, which are explained in the context of ON symptomatology, represent what would be considered the neuropsychological overlap among OCD and AN profiles.

Differential Relationships among Facets of Alexithymia and BDNF- and Dopamine-Related Polymorphisms  [PDF]

Neuroscience & Medicine (NM) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/nm.2012.31002
Abstract: Alexithymia refers to a cluster of emotion-related deficits such as difficulty attending to and identifying one’s feelings. Although not a diagnosable psychiatric condition, alexithymia is considered a personality risk factor for multiple pathologies, including somatoform, substance use, eating, and mood disorders. Evidence suggests heritability, but few studies have examined the influence of specific genes on alexithymic traits. Candidate genes explored thus far include those involved in modulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and dopamine, two neurotransmitters whose functions have been implicated in human emotion processing. This study investigated the relationship between the C270T polymorphism of the BDNF gene, facets of alexithymia, and possible interactions with the COMT, DAT1, and ANKK1 genes in a sample of 130 healthy adults. Given the multidimensionality of the alexithymia construct and its overlap with the related constructs of emotional intelligence and mood awareness, we used principal components analysis to derive Clarity of Emotion and Attention to Emotion as specific facets of alexithymia. Results showed that the C270T C/C genotype group had lower Clarity of Emotion scores relative to the C/T genotype group, even after covarying for COMT, DAT1, and ANKK1 genotypes. Dopamine-related genes had no association with alexithymia dimensions, nor did they interact with the C270T polymorphism to predict Clarity of Emotion. Although the molecular mechanisms by which this polymorphism influences BDNF are unknown, this study suggests a role for BDNF in modulating aspects of alexithymia. We discuss these results in the context of BDNF’s trophic effects in the nervous system.

ACIMED , 2007,
Abstract: the syndication of contents through rss channels is a contemporary method of content distribution in the web that enables the users to access only to the contents of their interest with no need to surf from one page to another. for content suppliers, it constitutes a method to personalize their services and to attract users to their websites. general aspects on the rss channels, as well as their origin and evolution, are analyzed. examples of their present applications in magazines, mass media, educational environments, commercial centres and information institutions are given. some recent trends in its use, not only to distribute texts, but also other multimedia contents such as audio and video, are stated. the tendency towards the expansion and diversification of its use is emphasized.
Sánchez Tarragó,Nancy;
ACIMED , 2007,
Abstract: the open access movement is based on two fundamental strategies to guarantee the access and dissemination without legal or economic restrictions of the scientific-technical information: the open access magazines and the thematic and institutional repositories. these repositories are fundamentally based on the fact that the own authors place their papers (self-archiving). diverse studies have revealed that the open access articles receive double citation, but only 15% of them were self-archived spontaneously. other studies illustrate that near 95% of the authors are willing to comply with the self-archiving system if there would be some policy or resolution issued to that effect. therefore, the existence of an institutional or national policy compelling the authors to self-archive their works constitutes a means to maximize the impact of the investigation through open access. an analysis is made of some factors that originated the open access movement and the current situation of the more prominent national and institutional policies that favour the self-archiving is reviewed. the importance of the creation of a policy of this type for cuba is enunciated.
