Stability diagram of colliding beams
X. Buffat,W. Herr,N. Mounet,T. Pieloni
Physics , 2014, DOI: 10.5170/CERN-2014-004.57
Abstract: The effect of the beam-beam interactions on the stability of impedance mode is discussed. The detuning is evaluated by the means of single particle tracking in arbitrarily complex collision configurations, including lattice non-linearities, and used to numerically evaluate the dispersion integral. This approach also allows the effect of non-Gaussian distributions to be considered. Distributions modified by the action of external noise are discussed.
Living with “problem” animals
Coralie Mounet
Revue de Géographie Alpine , 2009, DOI: 10.4000/rga.560
Abstract: The presence and recent spread of the wolf and the boar in the mountains of the French Alps are upsetting the organisation of territorial “vivre ensemble” (cohabitation) projects. This article examines how this new situation is being dealt with at the local level and attempts to redefine local life between men and animals. The macro-social approach often adopted in analysing conflicts surrounding “problem” animals is considered to be insufficient and the article attempts to complement this by proposing a micro-geographical perspective that seeks to determine the logic underpinning actors’ behaviour, which until now has been inaccessible. It thus focuses on the role of variability in local situations.

This article interrogates the consequences of the growth of natural sports in their relationship to the environment. Their recent evolution raises the problem of their durability seen under the angle of the environmental conservation within spaces protected as within the common nature. The controversy concerning their environmental impact seems to exclude the authoritarian solutions. The implemented of a participative democracy is different as it is about spaces protected in strong statutory privileges or not, or about common nature, defining strong or weak mediators. However, the participation remains limited to the spokesmen by leaving aside the very numerous sport followers outside any organization.
High-accuracy first-principles determination of the structural, vibrational and thermodynamical properties of diamond, graphite, and derivatives
Nicolas Mounet,Nicola Marzari
Physics , 2004, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.71.205214
Abstract: The structural, dynamical, and thermodynamical properties of diamond, graphite and layered derivatives (graphene, rhombohedral graphite) are computed using a combination of density-functional theory (DFT) total-energy calculations and density-functional perturbation theory (DFPT) lattice dynamics at the GGA-PBE level. Overall, very good agreement is found for the structural properties and phonon dispersions, with the exception of the c/a ratio in graphite and the associated elastic constants and phonon dispersions. Both the C_33 elastic constant and the Gamma to A phonon dispersions are brought to close agreement with available data once the experimental c/a is chosen for the calculations. The thermal expansion, the temperature dependence of the elastic moduli and the specific heat have been calculated via the quasi-harmonic approximation. Graphite shows a distinctive in-plane negative thermal-expansion coefficient that reaches the minimum around room temperature, in very good agreement with experiments. Thermal contraction in graphene is found to be three times as large; in both cases, ZA acoustic modes are shown to be responsible for the contraction, in a direct manifestation of the membrane effect predicted by Lifshitz over fifty years ago.
Les sports de nature en débat
Yohann Rech,Jean-Pierre Mounet
Faced with different problems raised by the management of outdoor recreation, some protected areas try to establish a participatory management that better involves practitioners and the various stakeholders. Based on a case study realized in the regional natural Park of Chartreuse (France), this article questions the way the ordinary practitioners perceive a participatory device under development and that is intended for them. The study of arguments developed by ordinary practitioners offers a contrasted representation of participatory management. A typology designs the various approaches to conceive public action in this kind of area as well as the role that each citizen agrees to play there. The analysis shows that participatory management comes up against different perceptions of human impacts on natural environment that is sometimes "renaturalized" by practitioners.
OUTDOOR RECREATION THROUGH THE PRISM OF ACTOR-NETWORK THEORY: CHALLENGES AND PROSPECTS
Yohann Rech,Jean-Pierre Mounet
Citius Altius Fortius , 2009,
Abstract: Actor-network theory (ANT) shows how scientific and technical innovations may take the form of a socio-technical network, by the aggregation of humans and non-humans (Callon, 1986; Latour, 1989). This article reflects on the contributions and limits of ANT to examine a particular object of research presenting regular innovations: the outdoor recreation. Firstly, the integration of non-humans to the analysis (Latour, 2006) is relevant in the study of nature sports because physical entities transform the action and involve specific associations. Then it is a particular epistemological positioning that shakes the dichotomies up and givesimportance to the reflexive activity of actors. Finally, understanding the development of collectives is useful for the study of nature sports. The construction of a social coexistence between different activities (sports activities and other activities) strongly questions the political transformation of contemporary democracy, including the establishment of a participatory management.
Canyoning et gestion de l’espace naturel.
Clémence Perrin-Malterre,Jean-Pierre Mounet
EspacesTemps.net , 2009,
The goal of this study is to understand how the canyoneering activity is organized in the regional natural parks of Vercors and of the massif of Bauges. To analyze this organization, the concepts developed by Friedberg for the analysis of organized action are used. We also want to question the relevance of the theory. Results highlight that the various contexts of action are not organized in the same way. There is a coexistence of more or less structured systems, according to the problems and actors involved. The management of a sport of nature is complex: private at the beginning, it may slide toward public administration or mixed management. In addition, we showed that, while Friedberg’s theory allows a fine analysis of the degree of organization of each context of action, it finds its limits when it comes to analyzing the way in which these contexts are articulated. We are confronted with the limits of a theoretical approach that focuses on one local order connected to a single problem, whereas the sports of nature are not reducible to that with regard to their management.
Implementation of a Higher Quality dc Power Converter  [PDF]
N. N. Barsoum
Journal of Electromagnetic Analysis and Applications (JEMAA) , 2010, DOI: 10.4236/jemaa.2010.22012
Abstract: Many single and three-phase converters are well developed, and covered up in most of electric markets. It is used in many applications in power systems and machine drives. However, an exact definite output signal from the dc side still not recognized. The waveforms of output voltage and current demonstrate an imperfect dc signal and constitute losses, harmonic distortion, low power factor, and observed some ripples. An approximately perfect rectifier bridge is the aim of this research. Perhaps it gives the ability to identify the parameters of the converter to obtain, as much as possible, a perfect dc signal with less ripple, high power factor and high efficiency. Design is implemented by simulation on Power Simulator PSIM, and practically, a series regulator LM723 is applied to provide regulating output voltage. Comparisons of both simulation and hardware results are made to observe differences and similarities.
Estimation of Sensitivity of the DS/AHP Method While Solving Foresight Problems with Incomplete Data  [PDF]
N. Pankratova, N. Nedashkovskaya
Intelligent Control and Automation (ICA) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ica.2013.41011
Abstract:

The paper provides mathematical analysis of sensitivity of different combination rules in the DS/AHP method when an alternative is added to the set of decision alternatives while solving foresight problems. Different cases of rank reversals are defined and two sets of conditions for these cases using the method DS/AHP are considered. Rank reversals are illustrated when the DS/AHP method is used to solve practical problem of critical technologies of energy conservation and power efficiency evaluation in Ukraine. It is shown that the DS/AHP method is not sensitive to exclusion (or addition) of an irrelevant decision alternative from (or to) the set of decision alternatives.
