Modeling the Black Hole Recoil from the Nucleus of M83  [PDF]

Abstract:

GEMINI + GMOS and Chandra emission-line spectroscopy reveal that the Fanaroff-Riley II radio-source J133658.3-295105 is a local object behind the barred-spiral galaxy M83 that is projected onto the galaxy’s disk at about 60\" from the galaxy’s optical nucleus. J133658.3-295105 and its radiolobes are aligned with the optical nucleus of M83 and two other radio-sources neither of which are supernova remnants or HII regions. The optical nucleus of M83 is off-centered by 2.7\" (≈60 pc) with regard to the kinematic center. Its mass is within the range (1 -4) × 106 \"\" and the velocity dispersion at its center points to a non-resolved mass concentration of ≤106 \"\". In this paper we study the circumstances in which the radio source would have been ejected from the central region of M83. We analyze different types of collisions of binary and triple systems of super-massive black holes (SMBHs) by numerical simulations using a Post-Newtonian approximation of order 7/2 (~1/c7). We developed an N-body code specially built to numerically integrate the Post-Newtonian equations of motion with a symplectic method.

Abstract: from a socioepistomological view, the intertwined social practices and self-generated social representations, establish a dialog different from the prevailing school discourse. in this report, we reflect about mathematics majors' argumentations about the geometric construction of the quadratic and logarithm functions using a geometric dynamic system. this work has been developed using the engineering didactic as a research method hence we include some reflections from the mathematical school discourse, from the epistemology of the logarithm function, and a brief state of the art about these notions.

Abstract: El artículo presenta un recurso sobre mediación y orientación familiar que forma parte del conjunto de instancias disponibles para la atención y la protección de la infancia y la adolescencia en Catalu a. Este recurso de mediación (SOMIA) es uno de los tres servicios pioneros e innovadores en mediación familiar en el Estado espa ol. Su finalidad fundamental es llevar a cabo una acción preventiva que ayude a propiciar la escucha y a mejorar la comunicación entre los miembros de la familia. Las nuevas formas de conflicto que genera la complejidad de la sociedad actual afectan también al contexto familiar. Aprender a desarrollar estrategias para gestionar y resolver conflictos desde una perspectiva positiva, ayudará a analizar las causas que generan las situaciones de conflicto y de violencia al tiempo que mejorará el clima familiar. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ L’article présente une ressource sur la médiation et l’orientation familiale qui fait partie de l’ensemble d’instances disponibles pour l’attention et la protection de l’enfance et l’adolescence en Catalogne. Consolidation of flaw-tolerant layered structures by the insertion of reactive layers

Abstract: The processing parameters to obtain a laminate consisting of very thin alumina-aluminium titanate crack deflecting layered structures sandwiched between relatively thick load bearing alumina layers are described. The optimum processing conditions for the insertion of reactive layers to improve joining during sintering have been established. Pre-sintered alumina tapes were used as the load bearing components while the internal structures were shaped by a combination of electrophoretic deposition (EPD) and dipping. The dipped layers acted as reactive layers during sintering. The thickness of the dipped layers has to be controlled in order to avoid the disappearance of the EPD structure during sintering as well as the cracking of the coating during drying or handling. The specimens were mechanically tested in three points bending with the applied load perpendicular to the layers and the fracture surfaces were observed by scanning electron microscopy. The obtained structure presents crack deflection at the microstructural scale during fracture which confers it flaw tolerance. Se describen los parámetros de procesamiento mas adecuados para obtener laminados constituidos por capas finas de alúmina-titanato de aluminio deflectoras de grietas alternadas con capas gruesas de alúmina resistentes a las cargas. Estas últimas se han fabricado a partir de láminas obtenidas por colaje en cinta y presintetizadas. Las estructuras con capacidad para la deflexión de las grietas se conformaron mediante una combinación de deposición electroforética e inmersión. Se han establecido las condiciones óptimas para que las capas obtenidas por inmersión actúen como capas reactivas durante la sinterización, sin que desaparezca la estructura EPD durante la sinterización ni se produzca el agrietamiento durante el secado y la manipulación de la estructura. El comportamiento mecánico de las estructuras laminadas obtenidas se analizó mediante ensayos de flexión en tres puntos, con la carga aplicada en la dirección perpendicular a la superficie de las capas, y observaciones fractográficas. La estructura óptima obtenida es tolerante a las grietas debido a la deflexión de éstas por las capas internas durante la fractura.

The $^{51}$Cr neutrino source and Borexino: a desirable marriage

Abstract: Exposure to a $^{51}$Cr neutrino source as that used in Gallex will provide an excellent overall performance test of Borexino, which should collect about 1400 source induced events, with an initial rate of about 35 counts per day. This will be particularly important if MSW-small-angle turns out to be the solution of the solar neutrino problem. In addition, if an independent, accurate calibration is available, one will have an interesting experiment on neutrino properties: as an example, a neutrino magnetic moment of the order $5\cdot10^{-11}\mu_B$could be detected/excluded at the 90\% C.L.
CC-distance and metric normal of smooth hypersurfaces in sub-Riemannian Carnot groups

Abstract: In this paper we study the main geometric properties of the Carnot-Carath\'eodory (abbreviated CC) distance $\dc$ in the setting of $k$-step sub-Riemannian Carnot groups from many different points of view. An extensive study of the so-called normal CC-geodesics is given. We state and prove some related variational formulae and we find suitable Jacobi-type equations for normal CC-geodesics. One of our main results is a sub-Riemannian version of the Gauss Lemma. We show the existence of the metric normal for smooth non-characteristic hypersurfaces. We also compute the sub-Riemannian exponential map $\exp\sr$ for the case of 2-step Carnot groups. Other features of normal CC-geodesics are then studied. We show how the system of normal CC-geodesic equations can be integrated step by step. Finally, we show a regularity property of the CC-distance function $\delta\cc$ from a $\cont^k$-smooth hypersurface $S$.
Opal-Based Photonic Crystal Heterostructures  [PDF]

Abstract: The fabrication of photonic crystal heterostructures is important for the applications in the fields of integrated photonic crystal chips and multi-frequency optical Bragg filters or mirrors; here we report on the fabrication and characterization of opal-based photonic crystal heterostructures. These heterostructures are created by using multilayer deposition of silica and polystyrene spheres. In the specific the fabricated structures involved both different lattice constant and dielectric function. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and VIS-NIR transmittance and reflectance spectroscopy are used to characterize the systems. The SEM images show good ordering of the two-layer colloidal crystals constituting the heterostructures. The transmittance and reflectance spectra measured from the (111) plane of the heterostructure show that the composite colloidal photonic crystals have double photonic stop bands that matches the stop bands of the individual photonic crystals. This behaviour can be seen as a superposition of the properties of each individual layer.

Abstract: Background: Autoantibodies (Aabs) are the hallmark of numerous systemic autoimmune pathologies (SAPs), for instance anti-Ro/SS-A Aabs are usually found in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and Sjogren’s Syndrome. Cutaneous photosensitivity (CP) is found in most forms and subsets of LE and consists of a skin rash as a result of unusual reaction to sunlight. There are many theories which relate specifically the presence of circulating anti-Ro/SS-A Aabs with the CP phenomenon, though there are several studies which are in disagreement. Results: In this study we analyzed the relationship between CP and anti-Ro Aabs by means of two approaches. The first one included an in vitro model where we evaluated by flow cytometry the binding capacity of affinity-purified Aabs to autoantigens relocalized on apoptotic keratinocyte’s surface. We found that there was no relationship between the binding capacity of serum from 10 selected patients or their corresponding purified anti-Ro52 and anti-Ro60 Aabs, and the presence or absence of CP, neither with the SAPs. The in vivo model consisted of Hairless SKH:1 mice which were induced to produce anti-murine Ro52 and/or Ro60 Aabs and were subsequently irradiated with UVB light. We evaluated the skin histology and also the epidermal production of TNF-α. We found no differences between the groups in neither of the parameters evaluated. Conclusions: These results agree with some studies on the role of the Aabs in CP, considering anti-Ro Aabs not as the only responsible for the manifestation; and disagree with many other authors, who believe in the strong association between these two events.
Water-balance response of Rhinella arenarum (Hensel, 1867) tadpoles to graduated increase in environmental osmolarity

Abstract: the water balance and the upper limit of osmotic tolerance of premetamorphic rhinella arenarum larvae (gosner's stage 26) was evaluated after semistatic incubation in electrolyte (nacl) and non-electrolyte (mannitol) media following a protocol of progressively increased osmotic pressure. wet and dry weights were measured to calculate the water content as a derived variable indicative of the hydric balance. statistical analysis was performed using univariate and integrated multivariate analysis. tadpoles survived in electrolyte and non-electrolyte solutions up to 200 mosm. the discriminant function was the best tool to describe the responses of the animals to external environmental stress under experimental conditions. the results were compared with those obtained in previous studies using a protocol of acute exposure to the same media used in this study. it was concluded that a) multivariate analysis is an appropriate approach to describe the responses of tadpoles to changes in the environmental physicochemical parameters, and b) progressive and acute acclimation to the experimental solutions induced similar responses.
