An Economic Analysis of Talinum triangulare (Jacq.) Production/Farming in Southern Nigeria

Abstract: This study takes a curious looks into the production systems, cost structure and profitability of Talinum triangulare production and farming in South-Eastern Agro ecological zone of Southern Nigeria. In this study area, about 70% of the entire population are peasant farmers cultivating arable crops and vegetables, few deals on Cash crops like oil palm and cocoa. Among the vegetables cultivated by these peasant farmers is Talinum triangulare. Talinum farming practice is done in extensive mode, casually cultivated in scattered areas and only a few farmers (20%) cultivate semi intensively in fadama areas. The costs and returns of extensive and semi-intensive farming systems are compared. Based on the Cobb-Douglas production function model, return to scale indicates that there is scope to increase production and income from Talinum farming in extensive and semi-intensive systems. By applying more inputs like improve cuttings, water irrigation, good cultivation tools and fertilizers in the study area, all farmers would made profit. Considerable variations in production costs and profitability were observed depending on the farming seasons, cycle and practice.
Mild Steel Corrosion Mitigation in Sulphuric Acid via Benign Isolated Phytochemicals from Viscum album  [PDF]

Abstract: We present the evaluation of four Eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors for the corrosion mitigation of mild steel in acid media. The corrosion inhibition of mild steel by ethanol extracts from Viscum album (EEVA) and some of its isolated phytochemical components; phytates extract (PEVA), saponins extract (SEVA), and flavonoids extracts (FEVA) have been studied using gravi-metric and gasometric techniques. The results of the study reveal that these ecofriendly and benign extracts function as good inhibitors for mild steel corrosion in sulphuric acid. Inhibition efficiency of the extracts increases with inhibitor concentration and temperature rise. The trend of inhibition efficiency in lower inhibitor concentration is EEVA > PEVA > SEVA > FEVA and at higher concentration, the order was SEVA > PEVA > EEVA > FEVA. The presence of the plant extracts decreases the corrosion activation energy in the solution which indicates chemical adsorption mechanism. The adsorption of the components of the extracts is consistent with Temkin isotherm. The interaction between the isolated extracts is synergistic at lower inhibitor concentration and antagonistic at higher concentrations. The Kads values for PEVA and SEVA are higher than those of EEVA and FEVA. This implies that PEVA and SEVA are more efficiently adsorbed on the mild steel surface.

Abstract: Background: The association of right coronary artery (RCA) stenosis in patients undergoing myocardial revascularization for left main coronary artery (LMCA) stenosis affects the prognosis. This study aimed to compare immediate results of patients with isolated LMCA stenosis and those with combined RCA stenosis. Patients and methods: We retrospectively evaluated 107 consecutive patients with LMCA disease who underwent coronary artery bypass grafts. The patients were divided into two groups: isolated LMCA stenosis (n = 36) and LMCA stenosis + RCA stenosis (n = 71). Different variables (preoperative, intra operative and post operative) were compared. Results: Patients with LMCA stenosis + RCA stenosis experienced higher prevalence of diabetes mellitus (p = 0.024) and smoker (p = 0.032). Also left ventricular EF was reduced (p = 0.004). Myocardial revascularization was more complete in patients with LMCA stenosis + RCA stenosis (p = 0.033), but in-hospital mortality rate was higher (12.6% vs 5.5%) in isolated LLMCA stenosis, but it did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.32). Except low output syndrome (LOS) that was frequent in presence of RCA stenosis (p = 0.026), no significant difference was found between groups for other complications. Conclusion: The presence of RCA stenosis in patients undergoing CABG for LMCA disease increases 30 day mortality but without significant impact on overall morbidities.
Genetic Variability and Heritability Studies of Desirable Metric Characters in Talinum triangulare Land-races in South Eastern Nigeria

Abstract: The present study seeks to estimate the genetic variability and heritability of desirable metric characters of Talinum triangulare (Jacq.) Willd. Forty two F1 population of Talinum triangulare (Jacq) Willd were planted in the field at the teaching and research farms of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Nigeria and studied for variation and heritability. Variance analysis indicated that phenotypic characters were significant (p<0.01) for such metric characters as final plant height, total number of leaves per plant, leaf area and fresh shoots yield. Partitioning the variance component revealed that the environment showed major effects on the performance of characters like total number of leaves per plant, leaves at flowering, final plant height and basal diameter. While total number of branches per plant and flowering, plant height at flowering, number of days to 50% flowering, leaf area and fresh shoots yield were genetically influenced. Considering the wide variability and high heritability estimates obtained, progress could be expected from selection based on plant height at flowering, number of branches per plant, days to 50% flowering, leaf area and fresh shoots yield.
Numerical differentiation methods for the logarithmic derivative technique used in dielectric spectroscopy

Abstract: In dielectric relaxation spectroscopy the conduction contribution often hampers the evaluation of dielectric spectra, especially in the low-frequency regime. In order to overcome this the logarithmic derivative technique could be used, where the calculation of the logarithmic derivative of the real part of the complex permittivity function is needed. Since broadband dielectric measurement provides discrete permittivity function, numerical differentiation has to be used. Applicability of the Savitzky-Golay convolution method in the derivative analysis is examined, and a detailed investigation of the influential parameters (frequency, spectrum resolution, peak shape) is presented on synthetic dielectric data.

Abstract: As a part of the framework of the development of ceramic products, scientific research continues this idea that clays are essential vehicles for local development in Africa; and therefore they deserve to be made profitable. This scientific work has the advantage of providing a solution to the housing of the Sahel area. On the other hand, this study can effectively serve as the basis of data in the formulation of ceramics from clay Maroua, in the region of the Far North Cameroon, for a large-scale industrial operation. Thus, two samples of materials respectively KO1 and IP2 have been the subject of a preliminary chemical and mineralogical size rheological study. Once formed, the tubes containing the KO1 and PI2 materials have undergone heat treatment at successive temperatures of 900°C, 1000°C and 1100°C. The baked products obtained have also been the subject of a study of resonance, coloring density, loss on ignition, water absorption, linear shrinkage, porosity and mechanical compression.

Abstract: A novel method for calculating resonances in three-body Coulombic systems is presented. The Faddeev-Merkuriev integral equations are solved by applying the Coulomb-Sturmian separable expansion method. To show the power of the method we calculate resonances of the three-$\alpha$ and the $H^-$ systems.

Abstract: The rebellion of Kabak Mustafa which broke out in May 1807 not only put an end to the process of renovation named as “Nizam- Cedit” but also drove the country into an atmosphere of chaos and crisis. In the process whereby the Ottoman Empire was trying to adapt to the European diplomatic system the Porte—which was squeezed among Britain, Russia and France—surrendered its foreign policy to France totally. Despite the opposition and resistance from the dominant staff in the reign of Mustafa IV, thanks to the chaos which the Ottoman Empire was in and France’s rising to the position of single dominant power in Europe, French Ambassador Sebastiani, who retained his superiority, established control over the domestic affairs of the Ottoman Empire ranging from the treaties between the Ottoman Empire and Britain or Russia, appointment of mayor to Baghdad, killing of the Diwan translator; even the exile of statesmen. In this study centering on the foreign policy of the Ottoman Empire, which was pivoting around France, the great change that the Ottoman Empire underwent in the realm of diplomacy will be dealt with.
Continued fraction representation of quantum mechanical Green's operators

Abstract: In this work we have presented a rather general and easy-to-apply method for discrete Hilbert space representation of quantum mechanical Green's operators. We have shown that if in some discrete Hilbert space basis representation the Hamiltonian takes an infinite symmetric tridiagonal, i.e. Jacobi-matrix form the corresponding Green's matrix can be calculated on the whole complex energy plane by a continued fraction. The procedure necessitates only the analytic calculation of the Hamiltonian matrix elements, which are used to construct the coefficients of the continued fraction. This continued fraction representation of the Green's operator was shown to be convergent for the bound state energy region. The theory of analytic continuation of continued fractions was utilized to extend the representation to the whole complex energy plane. The presented method provides a simple, easily applicable and analytically correct recipe for calculating discrete basis representation of Green's operators.
Mapping of functionalized regions on carbon nanotubes by scanning tunneling microscopy

Abstract: Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) gives us the opportunity to map the surface of functionalized carbon nanotubes in an energy resolved manner and with atomic precision. But this potential is largely untapped, mainly due to sample stability issues which inhibit reliable measurements. Here we present a simple and straightforward solution that makes away with this difficulty, by incorporating the functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) into a few layer graphene - nanotube composite. This enabled us to measure energy resolved tunneling conductance maps on the nanotubes, which shed light on the level of doping, charge transfer between tube and functional groups and the dependence of defect creation or functionalization on crystallographic orientation.
