Three-Dimensional Thermo-Elastic-Plastic Finite Element Method Modeling for Predicting Weld-Induced Residual Stresses and Distortions in Steel Stiffened-Plate Structures  [PDF]

Abstract: The objective of the present paper is to develop nonlinear finite element method models for predicting the weld-induced initial deflection and residual stress of plating in steel stiffened-plate structures. For this purpose, three-dimensional thermo-elastic-plastic finite element method computations are performed with varying plate thickness and weld bead length (leg length) in welded plate panels, the latter being associated with weld heat input. The finite element models are verified by a comparison with experimental database which was obtained by the authors in separate studies with full scale measurements. It is concluded that the nonlinear finite element method models developed in the present paper are very accurate in terms of predicting the weld-induced initial imperfections of steel stiffened plate structures. Details of the numerical computations together with test database are documented.

Abstract: La philosophie Ric urienne de la religion suit l’anthropologie kantienne, la bonté originaire et le mal radical de la nature humaine. Ric ur, toutefois, considère le problème du mal plus profondément que Kant. Il cherche alors, dans le kérygme religieux, la motivation plus profonde que le motif autonome, alors que Kant, par l’interprétation allégorique, s’adonne à la démystication de la religion historique. Le Dieu nommé s’addresse, au-delà du Dieu conceptuel kantien, au sens super-abondant au millieu du non-sens de la vie et ouvre l’horizon de théonomie. Celle-ci fait du commandement de l’amour un appel non-violent; l’amour qui réunit la forme universelle et la matière particulière de la norme morale. Ric ur’s philosophy of religion follows the anthroplogy of Kant, according to which human nature is originally good and at the same time radically evil. Ric ur, however, considers the problem of evil more profoundly than Kant. He tries to find, in the religious kerygma, a deeper motivation of it than autonomy, whereas Kant, by means of allegorical interpretation, engages in the demystification of religion. The named God refers, beyond the conceptual God of Kant, to a super-abundant meaning in the midst of the meaninglessness of life and thus opens the horizen of theonomy. Theonomy makes the commandment of love into a non-violent appeal. Love combines the universal form and the particular content of the moral norm.

Electrical Lie Algebra of Classical Types

Abstract: We investigate the structure of electrical Lie algebras of finite Dynkin type. These Lie algebras were introduced by Lam-Pylyavskyy in the study of \textit{circular planar electrical networks}. The corresponding Lie group acts on such networks via some combinatorial operations studied by Curtis-Ingerman-Morrow and Colin de Verdi\`{e}re-Gitler-Vertigan. Lam-Pylyavskyy studied the electrical Lie algebra of type $A$ of even rank in detail, and gave a conjecture for the dimension of electrical Lie algebras of finite Dynkin types. We prove this conjecture for all classical Dynkin types, that is, $A$, $B$, $C$, and $D$. Furthermore, we are able to explicitly describe the structure of the corresponding electrical Lie algebras as the semisimple product of the symplectic Lie algebra with its finite dimensional irreducible representations.
What Causes the Differences in Management Practices between US and UK? An Application of Decomposition Analysis on Firms across Countries  [PDF]

Abstract: The aim of this study is to examine what makes the differences of management practices between the United States and the United Kingdom using decomposition analysis. First, this study analyzes the determinants of management practices, and does the empirical research. Determinants of management practices are concluding product market competition, ownership, firm age, human resources (education, working hours, and payment). Essentially we argue that the differences (if any) between US and UK’s management practices can be expanded by product market competition and education. The results demonstrate that education (managers’ degree and employees’ degree) is positively correlated with management practice gap, but the impact of competition on management practices gap is negative. In particular, employees’ degree variables explained approximately 70% of the management gap.
$g_{K N Λ}$ and $g_{K N Σ}$ from QCD sum rules

Abstract: $g_{K N \Lambda}$ and $g_{K N \Sigma}$ are calculated using a QCD sum rule motivated method used by Reinders, Rubinstein and Yazaki to extract Hadron couplings to goldstone bosons. The SU(3) symmetry breaking effects are taken into account by including the contributions from the strange quark mass and assuming different values for the strange and the up down quark condensates. We find $g_{K N \Lambda}/\sqrt{4 \pi} = - 1.96 $ and $g_{K N \Sigma}/\sqrt{4 \pi} = 0.33 $
Fast Detection of GPR Objects with Cross Correlation and Hough Transform

Abstract: A GPR object detection algorithm delivers a promising performance using the Hough transform through a high computational load. This paper presents a fast Hough-based algorithm. To reduce the parameter space of the Hough transform, first, two parameters for a reflection hyperbola were estimated using cross correlation between adjacent A-scans. Next, only a 1D Hough transform is necessary to detect an object compared with the 3D transform, which comprises the traditional Hough-based methods. Our method is compared with three other detection methods using field data. The results show that the proposed method has an encouraging detection ability and high computational efficiency.

Abstract: Under many circumstances, the only important two-body interaction between atoms in ultracold dilute atomic vapors is the short-ranged isotropic s-wave collision. Recent studies have shown, however, that situations may arise where the dipolar interaction between atomic magnetic or electric dipole moments can play a significant role. The long-range anisotropic nature of the dipolar interaction greatly enriches the static and dynamic properties of ultracold atoms. In the case of dipolar spinor condensates, the interplay between the dipolar interaction and the spin exchange interaction may lead to nontrivial spin textures. Here we pay particular attention to the spin vortex state that is analogous to the magnetic vortex found in thin magnetic films.
Magnetic properties of a spin-3 Chromium condensate

Abstract: We study the ground state properties of a spin-3 Cr condensate subject to an external magnetic field by numerically solving the Gross-Piteavskii equations. We show that the widely adopted single-mode approximation is invalid under a finite magnetic field. In particular, a phase separation like behavior may be induced by the magnetic field. We also point out the possible origin of the phase separation phenomenon.
Observing dipolar confinement-induced resonances in waveguides

Abstract: We develop a theoretical framework for the quasi-low-dimensional confinement-induced resonances (CIRs) of particles with the arbitrary three-dimensional two-body interactions, based on the Huang-Yang pseudopotential and the treatment of Feshbach resonances. Using this new approach, we analytically obtain some universal properties of dipolar CIRs in quasi-one-dimensional (1D) waveguides. We also show that the dipolar CIRs can be induced by tuning the angle between the dipole moments and the waveguide, which is experimentally observable in quasi-1D Cr and Dy atomic gases. We expect that these tilting angle induced CIRs will open up a new simpler way to control the resonant scatterings in quasi-low-dimensional systems.
