Separation Properties and Related Bounds of Collusion-secure Fingerprinting Codes

Abstract: In this paper we investigate the separation properties and related bounds of some codes. We tried to obtain a new existence result for $(w_1, w_2)$-separating codes and discuss the "optimality" of the upper bounds. Next we tried to study some interesting relationship between separation and existence of non-trivial subspace subcodes for Reed-Solomon codes.

Abstract: In this paper, We study upper bounds for separating codes. First, some new upper bound for restricted separating codes is proposed. Finally, we illustrate that the Upper Bound Conjecture for separating Reed-Solomon codes inherited from Silverberg’s question holds true for almost all Reed-Solomon codes.

Abstract: A. Silverberg (IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory 49, 2003) proposed a question on the equivalence of identifiable parent property and traceability property for Reed-Solomon code family. Earlier studies on Silverberg's problem motivate us to think of the stronger version of the question on equivalence of separation and traceability properties. Both, however, still remain open. In this article, we integrate all the previous works on this problem with an algebraic way, and present some new results. It is notable that the concept of subspace subcode of Reed-Solomon code, which was introduced in error-correcting code theory, provides an interesting prospect for our topic.
Upper Bounds on the Number of Codewords of Some Separating Codes

Abstract: Separating codes have their applications in collusion-secure fingerprinting for generic digital data, while they are also related to the other structures including hash family, intersection code and group testing. In this paper we study upper bounds for separating codes. First, some new upper bound for restricted separating codes is proposed. Then we illustrate that the Upper Bound Conjecture for separating Reed-Solomon codes inherited from Silverberg's question holds true for almost all Reed-Solomon codes.
Swan-like reducibility for Type I pentanomials over a binary field

Abstract: Swan (Pacific J. Math. 12(3) (1962), 1099-1106) characterized the parity of the number of irreducible factors of trinomials over $F_2$. Many researchers have recently obtained Swan-like results on determining the reducibility of polynomials over finite fields. In this paper, we determine the parity of the number of irreducible factors for so-called Type I pentanomial $f(x)=x^m+x^{n+1}+x^n+x+1$ over $F_2$ with even $n$. Our result is based on the Stickelberger-Swan theorem and Newton's formula which is very useful for the computation of the discriminant of a polynomial.
The Debate about the Origin of Venereal Disease and VD Control in Modern China : Focusing on Shanghai and Beijing in the First Half of the Twentieth Century

Abstract: This paper examines venereal disease(VD) control in Shanghai and Beijing in the first half of the twentieth century. It focuses on the debate about the origin of VD in which western doctors stressed the importance of prostitution rather than VD itself. While missionary western doctors approached VD and prostitution from a moral perspective, Chinese western doctors adopted a public health approach. Because Chinese western doctors favored the medium of popular magazines and newspapers to publicize VD and enlighten the public, it is difficult to find their writings on VD in the medical journals such as The National Medical Journal of China(NMJ). Therefore, Chinese western doctors had not been indifferent to VD as previously thought. Common people preferred the black market to the open clinic, and abused salvarsan to cure VD in secret. This suggests the sensitive nature of VD as a disease that degrades personal honor. VD control varied depending on the perspective of the origin of VD and the prostitution, and measures taken. While moralists in the debate upheld a position to abolish licensed prostitution, public health enthusiasts propped up licensed prostitution. VD control in Shanghai and Beijing displays a striking contrast. In Shanghai, the power to control VD and prostitutes were separated. The Shanghai Municipal Council(SMC), French Municipal Council(FMC), and Shanghai Municipality(SM) did not cooperate in the control of VD and prostitutes. When SMC devoted its energies to abolish licensed prostitution, FMC and SM enjoyed prostitute's taxes. The Beiping Municipality(1928-1937) practiced multiple forms of control patterns and targets of VD. They adopted a bifurcated policy regarding VD. The targets of diagnosis were divided into prostitute, pregnant women, and normal citizen. The range of the reach of the health administration in Beiping Municipality was gradually magnified.
Defect energetics and electronic structures of As-doped p-type ZnO crystals: A first-principles study

Abstract: First-principles calculations based on density functional theory have been carried out to understand the mechanism of fabricating As-doped p-type ZnO semiconductors. It has been confirmed that AsZn-2VZn complex is the most plausible acceptor among several candidates for p-type doping by computing the formation and ionization energies. The electronic band structures and atomic-projected density of states of AsZn-2VZn defect complex-contained ZnO bulks have been computed. The acceptor level in AsZn-2VZn band structure has found to be 0.12 eV, which is in good agreement with the experimental ionization energy (0.12 ~ 0.18 eV). The hybridization among O 2p, Zn 3d and As 4s states has been observed around the valence band maximum.
Myelophil, a mixture of Astragali Radix and Salviae Radix extract, moderates toxic side effects of fluorouracil in mice

Abstract: AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of Myelophil, an extract containing Astragali Radix and Salviae Radix, for reducing complications induced by 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in a gastrointestinal cancer model.METHODS: We injected 5-FU into mice and then administered Myelophil to examine the ability of the drug to treat the side effects of 5-FU in mice. Peripheral blood counts, histological examinations, and colony-forming assays of bone marrow were conducted, followed by swimming tests and assessment of survival times.RESULTS: Myelophil restored red and white blood cells and platelets in blood, and recovered cell density in bone marrow to levels comparable to those observed within the control group. In addition, Myelophil significantly increased colony-forming unit granulocyte-macrophage (CFU-GM) and CFU-erythroid (CFU-E) compared to the control group. We confirmed that interleukin-3 gene expression was upregulated by Myelophil in spleen cells. Myelophil administration also doubled the survival rate of mice that were severely myelosuppressed as a result of 5-FU injection at a lethal dose of 70%. Finally, the swimming performance of mice significantly improved as a result of Myelophil treatment.CONCLUSION: These results provide experimental evidence in support of clinical applications of Myelophil to minimize 5-FU-induced myelosuppression and improve general post-chemotherapy health.
The Effect of Smartwork Environment on Organizational Commitment and Innovative Behavior in the Global Financial Service Industry  [PDF]

Abstract: This study analyzed how smartwork environment perceived by employees in global financial service industry (GFSI) influences their organizational commitment and innovative behavior. Data were collected through a questionnaire survey from 147 respondents randomly selected from seven global financial service firms in Seoul, Korea, where all three types of smartwork setting (working at home, mobile office, and smartwork center) are utilized. We found that no specific characteristic of smartwork environment (presenteeism, IT complexity, security risks, task interdependence) was significantly related to organizational commitment. For innovative behavior, only IT complexity and security risks of smartwork environment appeared to be significantly related. Contrary to our expectations, it was found that the negative emotion and stress of employees as to the complexity of IC technology and IT security risks can actually inspire their innovative behavior.
Carbon and nitrogen storage in an age-sequence of Pinus densiflora stands in Korea

Abstract: The carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) storage capabilities of Pinus densiflora in six different stand ages (10, 27, 30, 32, 44, and 71 years old) were investigated in Korea. Thirty sample trees were destructively harvested and 12 were excavated. Samples from the above and belowground tree components, coarse woody debris (CWD), forest floor, and mineral soil (0–30 cm) were collected. Tree biomass was highest in the 71-year-old stand (202.8 t ha 1) and lowest in the 10-year-old stand (18.4 t ha 1). C and N storage in the mineral soil was higher in the 71-year-old stand than in the other stands, mainly due to higher soil C and N concentrations. Consequently, the total ecosystem C and N storage (tree+forest floor+CWD+soil) was positively correlated with stand age: increasing from a minimum in the 10 year old stand (18.8 t C ha 1 and 1.3 t N ha 1) to a maximum in the 71-year-old stand (201.4 t C ha 1 and 8.5 t N ha 1). The total ecosystem C storage showed a similar sigmoidal pattern to that of tree C storage as a function of the age-sequence, while N storage in the CWD, forest floor and mineral soil showed no significant temporal trends. Our results provide important insights that will increase our understanding of C and N storage in P. densiflora stands and our ability to predict changes according to stand age in the region.
