Removing Heavy Metals from the Soil with Phytoremediation

Abstract: Environmental pollution is one of the most critical factors adversely affecting human health. Improvement in living standards, the rapid increase of urban populations, and widespread industrial production, all result in the generation of huge amounts of environment-polluting waste. Various methods are used to remove the pollutants generated by industrial activity but most of these methods require advanced technologies, involving a large financial investment and qualified personnel. Taking these costs and overheads into consideration, some economically developed countries have recently started working with phytoremediation (plantbased remediation) which, compared with the alternatives, is a much more environment-friendly waste treatment system. Also known as plant-based remediation, phytoremediation is defined as the use of various plants to stabilize or reduce contamination in the environment. Compared with other remediation technologies, phytoremediation offers the advantages of on-site treatment, aesthetic value, and low costs. Hyperaccumulators such as Indian Mustard (Brassica juncea), Red Fescue (Festucarubra), and Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) are known to absorb heavy metals, releasing them into the atmosphere in the form of gas. This study examines phytoremediation technology, the plant species that could be used for this purpose, and the feasibility of using phytoremediation in Turkey.

Abstract: Metaplastic carcinoma accounts for less than %1 of all malignant breast lesions. It has a more aggressive behaviour and worse prognosis than other breast carcinomas. Clinically metaplastic carcinomas are more common in women more than 50 years old and usually present as palpable masses. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mammographic, sonographic and magnetic resonance imaging findings of metaplastic carcinoma of the breast and to correlate the radiologic features with clinical and histopathologic findings. We present the clinical and radiological findings of 35 year old woman whose histopathologic diagnosis is metaplastic carcinoma.

Abstract: Generalizations of the Van der Pol system with polynomial interactions involving additional parameters are studied in order to understand qualitative properties such as stability and additional bifurcations in these generalized Van der Pol systems. The generalizations include the one known as the Duffing-Van der Pol system which has properties similar to those of the Maxwell-Bloch system. 1. Introduction Dynamical systems underlying many oscillatory real life problems that arise in applied sciences can be considered as generalizations of the Van der Pol (henceforth referred to as VP) system [1]. Due to its wide area of applications in a number of scientific areas such as electronics and geology, the VP system stands as an important example of dynamical systems. It was first developed by the Dutch physicist Balthasar Van der Pol (1889–1959) to model power amplifiers in vacuum tube radios exhibiting negative resistance [1]. Methods referred to by names such as averaging by Guckenheimer and Holmes [2] and two-variable expansion by Rand and Armbruster [3] have been applied to this system. Related types of averaging methods have also been applied by Strogatz [4], Verhulst [5, 6], Sanders et al. [7], Kuznetsov [8], Jordan and Smith [9], and Hale and Ko?ak [10] to similar oscillatory problems. We use standard averaging in the rest of this paper [2, 5, 7]. Oscillatory solutions to dynamical systems using the center manifold and normal form methods, and bifurcation and stability analysis have been extensively studied by Cao and Xiao [11–13]. This paper aims to look at possible generalizations of VP and Duffing-like systems and to study their bifurcation schemes in order to clarify our understanding. The methodology, some of the observed bifurcation scenarios, and attractor structures resemble those reported by Cao and Xiao in other systems [11–13]. Section 2 discusses quadratic generalizations of the VP system including the one known as the Duffing-Van der Pol (henceforth referred to as DVP) system and compares the averaging results with the averaged versions of some commonly known similar dynamical systems. Section 3 introduces a new generalization for the DVP system and investigates results obtained by methods discussed in previous sections. In Section 4, generalizations that introduce higher nonlinearities are studied in the same manner. Overall results are compared and discussed in Section 5. Abstract: Nowadays organizations strive to find the ways to communicate with their target audiences by using varied advertising mediums because of the developments on the information communication technologies and the globalization. In this context, like the other institutions, the distance education institutions has to execute communication activities by using different advertising mediums to create a positive position in their consumers minds. In this sense, the increase on the ownership of mobile phones and the new specialties of mobile phone technologies like accessing to the internet made mobile marketing efforts important on the advertising investments of distance education institutions. Especially with the mobile marketing, distance education institutions can create personalized informative and promotion messages for their target audiences. Mobile marketing approach has lots of advantages for the institutions and the most important advantages that helps the institutions are; the formats of the approach are forming according to the newest technological developments and it gives chance to create messages for specific target audiences. But mobile marketing has also disadvantages like; the target audience’s mobile phones can be incompatible with the messages and the target audience can ignore these messages. However much the approach has some disadvantages, the distance education institutions- which are based on the technological developments also like the mobile marketing approach- has to invest on mobile marketing according to send personalized and effective advertising messages about their programs’ contents, benefits etc.
INTERNALIZATION STRATEGIES AND VALUE IMPLICATIONS OF LATIN AMERICAN EMERGING MARKET MULTINATIONALS

Abstract: This study investigates the Internationalization strategies and their value implications ofLatin American Emerging Market Multinationals (LAEMMs). We examine 66 mergers andacquisitions (M&A) announcements, 20 joint venture (JV) announcements and 9 StrategicAlliance (SA) announcements associated with LAEMMs during the sample period of 1991-2005. First, the paper explores the effects of cross-border expansion patterns on firm valuecreation. Second, it examines market reaction to the announcements of cross-borderexpansion patterns. Third, it evaluates firm performance in relation to the cross-borderexpansion activities. This study finds that most LAEMMs do not earn significantly positiveabnormal returns during the event windows defined in this study. However, it is generallyevident that there is value creation in international expansion activities. According to theevent-study results, value creation is mostly associated with SAs. This finding is consistentwith previous research. It is also indicated that most SA announcements are received by themarket positively. JVs also experience value creation during the event windows utilized inthis study. However, value creation of JVs is not to the extent that of SAs. Market reaction toJV announcements is also positive, but not to the degree of SAs.

Abstract: The present paper is concerned with two novel approximate analytic solutions of the undamped Duffing equation. Instead of the traditional perturbation or asymptotic methods, a homotopy technique is employed, which does not require a small perturbation parameter or a large parameter for an asymptotic expansion. It is shown that proper choices of an auxiliary linear operator and also an initial approximation during the implementation of the homotopy analysis method can yield uniformly valid and accurate solutions. The obtained explicit analytical expressions for the solution predict the displacement, frequency and period of the oscillations much more accurate than the previously known asymptotic or perturbation formulas.
Osteoma of mastoid process obstructing external auditory canal: A case report  [PDF]

Abstract: Objective: To discuss the surgical treatment of recurrent osteoma of the mastoid process of the temporal bone, that obstructed external auditory canal causing unilateral conductive hearing loss. Setting: The study was carried out in ENT Clinic, University Clinical Center of Kosovo, Prishtina, Kosovo. Design: Retrospective review of a clinical case. Patient, Intervention and Result: We treated surgically with success a 14-year-old boy with osteoma of mastoid process, obstructing the external auditory canal of the left ear and causing conductive hearing loss. Axial and coronal computed tomography scans revealed an compact bone lesion that obstructed the canal. Complete removal of the lesion was achieved by a retroauricular approach. Conclusion: In order to achieve complete removal of the osteoma, drilling of the lesion must be performed not through the tumor, but around the osteoma, in the surrounding bone tissue.

Abstract: Time evaluation of wave functions for any quantum mechanical system/particle is essential nevertheless quantum mechanical counterpart of the time dependant classical wave equation does simply not appear. Epistemologically and ontologically considered time dependant momentum operator is initially defined and an Alternative Time Dependant Schrodinger Wave Equation (ATDSWE) is plainly derived. Consequent equation is primarily solved for the free particles, in a closed system, signifying a good agreement with the outcomes of the ordinary TDSWE. Free particle solution interestingly goes further possibly tracing some signs of new pathways to resolve the mysterious quantum world.

Abstract: Minimal or moderate breast ptosis can be treated with Benelli mastopexy technique in experienced hands. Tightening of the periareolar tissue, inappropraite suture usage, excessive tissue removal lead to severe complications in some patients. Patients with these complications is more than difficult to treat breast ptosis. It needs extra tissue to reduce the tensions in patients with wide circumareolar scar tissue and wide areolary complex. Vertical scar mastopexy technique can be used to treat these type of complications as a scar reduction methods.
