Colombia Forestal , 2009,
Abstract: the floristic composition and the structure of a humid hill forest were determined. the forest is located in the northernmost area of the colombian central mountain range. the methodology proposed by isa-jaum was employed in this study, from a 0.1 ha sample. moreover, plant material was collected from clear spots, stubbles and grasslands. a total of 421 vascular plants species were found. two hundred and thirty eight of these come from the 0.1 ha sample and only 150 had dbh> 2.5 cm, which highlights the benefits of the sample method employed, since it was possible to record a large number of epiphytic and herbaceous elements in the forest. in general, the composition matches what was previously reported in similar areas. the families melastomataceae (32), lauraceae (31), rubiaceae (29) and araceae (15) were the ones holding the largest number of species. new chorological records for the state of antioquia were reported in this study; for instance, colombobalanus excelsa (fagaceae). high density of individuals (388) was found at structural level. the patterns of height and diametrical classes followed the typical distribution of disetaneous tropical forests, in which the largest amount of individuals occur in the lowest classes and few species with individuals having the greatest diameters and heights account for the major ecological weight in the forest. despite the great diversity documented, these forests are currently subject to an intensive process of fragmentation and loss of coverage.

Abstract: Tissue samples from 44 patients with breast cancer were used to assess telomerase activity using the TRAP method and the expression of ERα, ERβ and bcl-2 by means of immunocytochemical techniques.Telomerase activity was detected in 59% of the 44 breast tumors examined. Telomerase activity ranged from 0 to 49.93 units of total product generated (TPG). A correlation was found between telomerase activity and differentiation grade (p = 0.03). The only significant independent marker of response to treatment was clinical stage. We found differences between the frequency of expression of ERα (88%) and ERβ (36%) (p = 0.007); bcl-2 was expressed in 79.5% of invasive breast carcinomas. We also found a significant correlation between low levels of telomerase activity and a lack of ERβ expression (p = 0.03).Lower telomerase activity was found among tumors that did not express estrogen receptor beta. This is the first published study demonstrating that the absence of expression of ERβ is associated with low levels of telomerase activity. The mechanism for maintaining telomere integrity is controlled by telomerase, a ribonucleoprotein enzyme that specifically restores telomere sequences lost during replication by means of an intrinsic RNA component as a template for polymerization. Telomerase has 2 core functional components that are required for its activity the catalytic subunit of human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT), and a telomerase RNA template (hTR). It is activated in most immortal cell lines in culture and in most malignant tumors [1] and is detected in 85–90% of human cancer specimens [2]. Telomerase activity is found in most tumor types including colorectal, breast, prostate, ovarian carcinomas and others. It also is increased in pre-invasive lesions of the breast, such as ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), suggesting that telomerase activity is activated early in breast carcinogenesis [3]. Among the telomerase subunits, TERT is concomitantly expressed with the
Coulomb Stress Perturbations Related to the Al Hoceima (Morocco) Earthquakes of 1994 and 2004  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper exposes the results of the study of the stress perturbations caused by the Al Hoceima (Morocco) earthquakes of 1994 and 2004 by means of Coulomb modeling. Modeling was based on the compilation of all the studies carried out after both events, including seismological (location and depth of the main shocks and aftershocks), seismotectonic (source parameters, stress field), geodetic (GPS), tomographic and geological ones. It shows that the first earthquake is likely to have induced the second one when adopting appropriate epicenter locations, source and receiver fault planes. In detail, the model shows that motion along the N23E oriented Bousekkour-Aghbal fault in 1994 activated the eastern segment of a previously unknown NW-SE fault located at its southern end, which in turn originated the 2004 earthquake. The model also provides a suitable explanation for the distribution of the aftershock clusters. Finally, an attempt of prediction of the next event shows that it is likely to occur on NE-SW planes located to the NW (Bokkoya and offshore) and SE (reaching the Nekor fault) of the NW-SE fault, while Al Hoceima city should remain in a shadow zone.

Abstract: This paper shows results using an amusement park premises, in order to improve appropriation of such physics concepts such as; circular motion, work and energy, among others. I assumed the park as an experimental lab. That’s the reason why I performed and applied a guidance material, taking it as a learning object. These guides have the objective to relate theory and experience by the analysis about some mechanical attractions. The experiment was carried out with students in the subject “mechanical physic” in a public university, from Bogota, Colombia. I developed both, sessions in the classroom and in the amusement park, also was assessed on three times (before, during and after to the park visit). Analysis of results and conclusions, allow us to see the level of skills development, dimensions of knowledge and strengths of the process, showing an improvement about significance and construction on concepts discussed.

Abstract: This article shows the results of a research project in the area of Artificial intelligence, specifically in the field of the representation of the human knowledge. It presents a conceptual or theoretical model of the behavior of automobile drivers, whose development is based on the representation paradigm called Context-based Reasoning (CxBR). The model is based on the profile of a Costa Rican automobile driver with certain characteristics, constituting itself thus in a model example to develop future simulations of vehicular traffic in other countries. The article presents a description of the paradigm Context-base Reasoning and then it exposes the conceptual model of automobile drivers’ behavior.
