Yüksek??retim ve Bilim Dergisi , 2012,
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate the norms in graduate education based on gender, education level, institution and departments. Th e study group of the present study is composed of 294 graduate students who are currently enrolled in graduate schools from 12 universities (Hacett epe University, Ankara University, Gazi University, Anadolu University, Akdeniz University, Eski ehir Osmangazi University, Dumlup nar University, anakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Pamukkale University, Mersin University, Bülent Ecevit University [formerly Zonguldak Karaelmas University], and Atatürk University) in Turkey. Th e instrument entitled “Norms in Graduate Education” developed by Anderson & Louis (1994) was used. Cronbach's alpha coeff icient for the LEN was 93. Construct validity of mentoring scale was tested with confirmatory factor analysis. Th is analysis was performed with LISREL, and it was found that the model with three primary domains and 10 sub-constructs fits. LEN had dimensions such structured feedback, formality, collaboration, group size, humane, solidarity, value congruence, technical, strategic and personal. Moreover, MANOVA, ANOVA, and corelation analysis were used this study. Th ese dimensions are parts of structure, climate and mentoring. Findings indicated that educational level and department had some infl uence on structure while the institution had an infl uence on climate. Further, significant relationships were found among the study variables.

Natural Science (NS) , 2010, DOI: 10.4236/ns.2010.212173
Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the effects of making Science, Technology, Society and En-vironment relations on students’ comprehen-sion of chemistry topics through teaching che-mistry using STSE approach at secondary level. The study made use of the research model where pre and post tests were administered to control and treatment groups. The Chemistry Achievement Test (CAT) was used in the study. The sampling consisted of Grade 9 students studying at Anatolian High School and Voca-tional High School. Since the sampling had not been equated, in order to determine students’ logical and spatial thinking skills, they were administered Logical Thinking Skill Test and Mental Rotation test as pretests. Students were chosen randomly to take part in two control and two treatment groups. This experimental study was applied to the treatment group in teaching of “Separation of Mixtures” topic in Grade 9 Chemistry course during a four-week period. Students in the control group were taught through the traditional teaching methods. The data obtained were analyzed through the SPSS Software. As a result of the study, statistically significant increases were observed in the achievement levels of treatment group which received instruction using STSE relations. The change observed in the achievement levels of the control group was not statistically signifi-cant. The difference between the achievement levels of control and treatment groups in the posttests were favoring the treatment groups.
Inflammatory pseudotumor of the spleen: A case report
Türk Patoloji Dergisi , 2008,
Abstract: Inflammatory pseudotumors, also known as inflammatory miyofibroblastic tumors, are rare benign tumors of the spleen. The diagnosis of these tumors may be difficult, because they simulate some hematopoetic malignancies, leiomyosarcomas, inflammatory malignant fibrous histiocytoma and inflammatory fibrosclerosing lesions. They frequently occur at lung. But they are reported at gastrointestinal system, orbit, liver, bladder, lymph nodes, heart, brain, mesentery, omentum and spleen. Histologically they are composed of an admixture of cells like lymphocytes, plasma cells, foamy histiocytes, neutrophils and eosinophils with fibrosis, sclerosis and plump fibroblasts. Immunohistochemical stains show diffuse staining of tumor cells with vimentin and less common with myogenic markers like smooth muscle actin, muscle specific actin and desmin. CD 68 and focal cytokeratin immunoreactivity are found. We present a case of 53 year old female. Laboratory investigations were normal. Abdominal ultrasonography showed a heterogenous, hypoechoic nodular mass measuring 30x27 mm in the superior portion of the spleen parenchyma. Splenectomy was performed. Histologically the lesion was composed of inflammatory cells and miyofibroblasts. The case was diagnosed as inflammatory pseudotumor (Inflammatory miyofibroblastic tumor) with histological and immunohistochemical findings.

Türk Patoloji Dergisi , 2011,
Abstract: Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate the importance of consumption of the epidermis as an additional diagnostic criteria for malignant melanoma and to evaluate its relationship to clinicopathological findings.Material and Method: The age, gender, localization of the lesion and the histopathological parameters such as tumor type, Breslow thickness, ulceration, Clark's level, mitosis/mm2, lymphocytic infiltration were noted in 40 malignant melanoma cases. Consumption of the epidermis was evaluated in tumor sections. Consumption of the epidermis (COE) due to thinning of the epidermis and loss of rete ridges was noted as (+) or (-). Furthermore, COE was compared with clinical and histopathological parameters. The Shapiro Wilk and Logistic Regression tests were used for statistical analysis. The results were accepted as significant if the p value was <0.05.Results: COE was detected in 60% (24/40) of malignant melanoma cases. A positive correlation was present between COE and head and neck localization (p=0,698), superficial spreading melanoma (p=0,341), ulceration (p=0,097) and brisk lymphocytic infiltration (p=0,200) but the results were not statistically significant. COE was frequently detected in males but the difference was not statistically significant (p=0.796). There was no correlation or significant statistical association between COE and age, Breslow thickness, Clark's level or the mitotic index. Conclusion: The detection of COE in most of the patients suggests that COE could be a histopathological criterion in the diagnosis of malignant melanoma. The frequent association between COE and the presence of ulceration could also direct attention to COE as regards prognostic importance.
The Expression of p53 and Cox-2 in Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Actinic Keratosis Cases
Türk Patoloji Dergisi , 2012,
Abstract: Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate p53 and COX-2 expressions in basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and actinic keratoses, and to determine a possible relationship.Material and Method: 50 basal cell carcinoma, 45 squamous cell carcinoma and 45 actinic keratosis cases were evaluated. The type of tumor in basal cell carcinoma and tumor differentiation in squamous cell carcinoma were noted and the paraffin block that best represented the tumor was chosen. Immunostaining by p53 and COX-2 was performed on sections of the paraffin blocks. Results: p53 expression was observed in 98% of basal cell carcinoma, 88.9% of squamous cell carcinoma and all actinic keratosis cases. p53 expression was also noted in non-dysplastic appearing epithelium in actinic keratosis cases. COX-2 expression was seen in 90, 100 and 88.9% of the basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and actinic keratosis groups, respectively. Skin appendages, inflammatory cells and vascular structures were also stained by COX-2 besides tumor tissue. COX-2 expression increased by the p53 expression increase in basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. p53 and COX-2 expressions were not related in terms of tumor type in the BCC and were not related in terms of differentiation in SCC.Conclusion: The existence of p53 expression in actinic keratosis cases has supported the idea that p53 plays a role in the early steps of carcinogenesis in skin cancers. The fact that the expression of COX-2 increases in line with the increase of p53 expression in basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma cases indicates that COX-2 expression may be affected by p53

N?ropsikiyatri Ar?ivi , 2012,
Abstract: Ob-jec-ti-ve: The aim of this study was the management of emotional problems associated with chronic renal disease by using group psychotherapy in hemodialysis patients. Met-hods: 5 age- and education-matched subjects with emotional problems associated with their disease were included in the study. Group therapy has been conducted as “transactional group image therapy”, for 1.5 hours, once a week, for a total of 11 sessions.Re-sults: It was observed that the patients in the group therapy were going through either one or more stages of “denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance”. The stages were taken into consideration and the patients examined their own feelings and were able to talk about their disease. It was observed that the patients started to be able to cope with difficulties faced in daily life due to the disease, and that the compliance with treatment and their quality of life increased. As a result, it can be concluded that group psychotherapy was effective for patients with chronic renal disease in solving their emotional problems. Conc-lu-si-on: It should be considered that enabling the widespread use of group therapy and conducting the therapy process with a longer duration would help these patients to cope with their disease easier. We assume that a structured scale would be a helpful tool in future studies on the effectiveness of group psychotherapy. (Arc-hi-ves xx Neu-ropsy-chi-atry 2012;49: 63-7)

Marmara Medical Journal , 2011,
Abstract: Objective: Pityriasis lichenoides is a papulosquamous inflammatory skin disease. Narrowband ultraviolet B, a commonly used phototherapeutic modality, has an important place in its treatment. Treatment and follow-up results of pityriasis lichenoides patients treated with narrowband ultraviolet B in our phototherapy unit are presented here. Methods: The treatment records of 25 pityriasis lichenoides patients who completed narrowband ultraviolet B treatment were retrospectively evaluated. Ultraviolet B treatment was performed 3 days a week until complete resolution or minimal residual activity was achieved. Treatment response was determined as complete, marked, moderate or mild improvement or as no response. The appearance of new skin lesions during the follow-up period after treatment was defined as a relapse. Results: The mean age of the patients was 22 (min-max:3-49) and the mean disease duration was 30.2 (min-max:3-120) months. After a mean of 24.6 (min-max:12-45) treatment sessions, 17 patients (68%) achieved complete, 4 patients (16%) marked, 1 patient moderate (4%) and 1 patient (4%) mild improvement whereas 2 patients (8%) showed no response. Eight patients (32%) had mild to moderate erythema at least once during the treatment. None of the patients gave up treatment due to side effects. In all 9 patients who were followed up, relapse was seen after a mean time of 10.1 months (min-max 1- 24 months). Conclusion: The results of the present study show that narrowband ultraviolet B is an effective and safe method in the treatment of pityriasis lichenoides.
Call Centers as Opportunities in Development of Less Developed Regions*
Ebru SEKN,Ay?e Nur ?KTEN
Megaron , 2009,
Abstract: At the end of the economic reconstruction process experienced since the 1980s, social scientists have discovered new industry areas, concepts such as flexible production and spatial division of labor, and they began focusing increasingly on services. During this era, many professions in the production and service sector were eliminated as a result of automation. There has been a growing tendency towards the spatial separation of routine and non-routine office activities in advanced economies. Routine activities that are defined as back office activities, mainly involving data processing (e.g. payroll, accounting, subscriptions, billing, credit card services, claims processing and word processing), so-called “call centers”, are moved to less developed regions with cheap and skilled labor. Call centers are offices established by organizations to deliver services remotely by telephone, replacing the need for face-to-face interaction with customers. This paper considers the implications of call center work on economic development in regions in Turkey facing relative economic disadvantage.
Changes in Physiological Parameters and Some Antioxidant Enzymes Activities of Soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) Leaves Under Cadmium and Salt Stress
Aksoy M.,Sekn (D?nler) B.
Journal of Stress Physiology & Biochemistry , 2012,
Abstract: The combined effect of cadmium stress (0,5 mM Cd(NO 3)2) and salt stress (100 mM NaCl) on growth, lipid peroxidation and activities of some antioxidant enzymes were studied in soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) leaves. Shoot lenghts were not changed under all groups. But fresh and dry weight were decreased under salt treatment alone and Cd treatment alone. The decrease was more in the group of combined of Cd and salt treatment. Although APX activity increased under salt treatment alone and combined of Cd and salt treatment, GR activity increased under Cd treatment alone and combined of Cd and salt treatment. Nevertheless DHAR activity increased only in combined of Cd and salt stress. MDA content increased under all groups but it was more in the combined of Cd and salt stress which indicates that salinity is more harmful with cadmium stress in soybean plants. Thus, it was concluded that some of antioxidant enzymes (APX, GR, DHAR) increased their activity under combined of Cd and salt treatment but they were not efficient to protect oxidative damage from soybean plants by alleviating the lipid peroxidation.
