Abstract: Objectives: A step to provide national standard of birth weight of Pakistani neonates. Design: A Prospective and comparative study.Setting: This study was conducted at Sheikh Zyed, Fatima Memorial, Ganga Ram Hospitals Lahore and Sandeman Civil Hospital Quetta.Subject & Methods: 1028 neonates of healthy mothers were weighed. Birth weight was taken with in one hour after birth of naked neonatesby means of Tanita baby weighing scale. Results: The neonates from mothers belonging to good socio economic status and multiparousmothers were significantly heavier than mothers belonging to poor socioeconomic status and primiparous mothers respectively. Maleneonates were significantly heavier than female babies. No effect of high altitude and consanguinity was noticed on birth weight. Birth weightof neonates of present study was equal to Indian neonates but lower than those of Chinese and Malayan living in Singapore, but far awayfrom British Standards. Conclusion: Most of our females are unaware of importance of pregnancy, so there is need for improving maternalawareness to take balanced diet, adequate rest, specially during third trimester and suitable interval between successive pregnanciesthrough information campaign by electronic and print media as well as in Maternal and Child Health centers.
Xilinx System Generator® Based Implementation of a Novel Method of Extraction of Nonstationary Sinusoids  [PDF]

Model based implementation of a novel nonlinear adaptive filter for extraction of time varying sinusoids using Xilinx system generator has been presented in this work. The practicality of this filter model along with its performance makes it one of the foremost candidates to be applied on nonlinear systems for the purpose of estimation and extraction using reconfigurable hardware like FPGA. A design implementation and verification approach has been discussed for more efficient implementation. Timing and power analysis has been performed and the architecture has been optimized for speed and power to perform at higher frequency when integrated on a Xilinx FPGA. The proposed hardware oriented architecture has been successfully implemented and simulated. The simulation results to track a noisy input have also been shown to demonstrate the exceptional performance of the hardware based architecture developed.

Modular Network SOM (mnSOM): A New Powerful Tool in Neural Networks

Abstract: In this paper, a new powerful method in artificial neural networks, called modular network SOM (mnSOM) is introduced. mnSOM is a generalization of Self Organizing Maps (SOM) formed by replacing each vector unit of SOM with function module. The modular function could be a multi layer perceptron, a recurrent neural network or even SOM itself. Having this flexibility, mnSOM becomes a new powerful tool in artificial neural network.
Investigation of Managers' Perception about Employees' Learning Aptitude

Abstract: Corporate sector is facing a cut throat competition these days. This competitive environment gives very less time to managers and supervisors to train their employees and make them learnt to meet their job requirements. Secondly business world is changing every day; people observe new technology, new products, fluctuation in demand, globalization, diverse work force and competent colleagues in their organizations. Employees have to take self-initiative for learning technology, systems, procedures and behaviors to meet the challenges of this competitive corporate environment. That shows a dire need of learning aptitude in employees of corporate sector. Managers have different perceptions about employees' learning aptitude. The study is conducted on corporate sector of three cities in Sultanate of Oman. Findings revealed that corporate mangers of this region of the country have not positive perception about employees' learning aptitude. Data analysis concluded that many managers have an ample disagreement or they are neutral that employees have learning aptitude. The lack of learning aptitude is a constraint to organizational performance. A large number of employees are not interested in learning by self initiative. That causes a hurdle in their career growth and a decreasing trend in their job performance. A social awareness and use of active learning methods in colleges and universities are desirable to create a better learning aptitude in employees.
Sentence based semantic similarity measure for blog-posts

Abstract: Blogs-Online digital diary like application on web 2.0 has opened new and easy way to voice opinion, thoughts, and like-dislike of every Internet user to the World. Blogosphere has no doubt the largest user-generated content repository full of knowledge. The potential of this knowledge is still to be explored. Knowledge discovery from this new genre is quite difficult and challenging as it is totally different from other popular genre of web-applications like World Wide Web (WWW). Blog-posts unlike web documents are small in size, thus lack in context and contain relaxed grammatical structures. Hence, standard text similarity measure fails to provide good results. In this paper, specialized requirements for comparing a pair of blog-posts is thoroughly investigated. Based on this we proposed a novel algorithm for sentence oriented semantic similarity measure of a pair of blog-posts. We applied this algorithm on a subset of political blogosphere of Pakistan, to cluster the blogs on different issues of political realm and to identify the influential bloggers.

Abstract: Text mining is becoming vital as Web 2.0 offers collaborative content creation and sharing. Now Researchers have growing interest in text mining methods for discovering knowledge. Text mining researchers come from variety of areas like: Natural Language Processing, Computational Linguistic, Machine Learning, and Statistics. A typical text mining application involves preprocessing of text, stemming and lemmatization, tagging and annotation, deriving knowledge patterns, evaluating and interpreting the results. There are numerous approaches for performing text mining tasks, like: clustering, categorization, sentimental analysis, and summarization. There is a growing need to standardize the evaluation of these tasks. One major component of establishing standardization is to provide standard datasets for these tasks. Although there are various standard datasets available for traditional text mining tasks, but there are very few and expensive datasets for blog-mining task. Blogs, a new genre in web 2.0 is a digital diary of web user, which has chronological entries and contains a lot of useful knowledge, thus offers a lot of challenges and opportunities for text mining. In this paper, we report a new indigenous dataset for Pakistani Political Blogosphere. The paper describes the process of data collection, organization, and standardization. We have used this dataset for carrying out various text mining tasks for blogosphere, like: blog-search, political sentiments analysis and tracking, identification of influential blogger, and clustering of the blog-posts. We wish to offer this dataset free for others who aspire to pursue further in this domain.
Converting Standard HTML Input Controls to Urdu

Abstract: Urdu being a widely spoken language of the world deserves a fair share on the internet. There are many web sites that show information in Urdu using images or character based display but dynamic internet applications accepting input in Urdu and displaying customized web pages are still hard to find. The fundamental requirement for Urdu-enabled web applications are the standard input controls that would work for Urdu in ordinary HTML documents as they do for English. This paper proposes an algorithm to convert the standard HTML input controls to work for Urdu as well. Some essential issues before the conversion process are also handled. These issues include display of Urdu inside input controls, dynamic association of keyboard buttons to Urdu alphabets and use of proper character coding scheme. The algorithm was successfully tested with standard server side scripts which displayed dynamic Urdu text generated by the code or retrieved through connected database.
Evaluation of Pear Varieties for Physiochemical Traits Grown under Climatic Conditions of Soon Valley, Pakistan  [PDF]

Abstract: The study carried out aimed at characterizing the pear cultivars and to explore the specific cultivar most suitable to be commercially grown in Soon valley region. Nine pear varieties (Leconte, Bagugosha, Bartlet pear, Concord, Pear selection-1, Pear Red, Pear White, Kashmiri Nashpati and Kashmiri Nakh) were tested for their physiochemical quality attributes. The observations made during the study revealed that variety Bagugosha scored maximum (7.95, 8.10) in taste and flavor respectively. The same variety produced maximum fruit size (5081 mm2), fruit weight (205 g), soluble solid contents (15%) and total sugars (9.56%). However, fruit yield per plant was maximum (98.80 kg) in Bartlet pear variety and Bagugosha produced fruitweight of 60.20 kg. Titratable acidity was determined maximum (0.44%) in Kashmiri Nakh. Number of seeds were maximum (8.20) in Bartlet Pear as well as in Bgugosha. The exploration of this research study revealed that the Bagugosha is the prime quality cultivar to be suggested for commercial cultivation in Soon valley compared to all nine evaluated varieties.
Relationship of Some Morpho-physiological Traits with Grain Yield in Maize

Abstract: Maize is sensitive to drought and suffers a serious setback in yield due to high temperature stress. There is need to evaluate maize inbred lines, which are resistant to drought conditions. Ten maize inbred lines namely MO-17, DK-656, IZI-7103, SYP-31, AYP-17, H-93, B-73, A-6660, IZI-4001 and KLI-2301 were exposed to water stress in drought chamber. Genotypic and phenotypic correlation coefficients of various plant morpho-physiological traits with grain yield were ascertained. Survival rate treat. II, root-shoot ratio, stomatal frequency and photosynthetically active rations showed significant correlation at genotypic level with grain yield. The study emphasized that these morpho-physiological traits have underlying genetic basis. Once these basis are understood precisely, breeders will be able to tailor maize varieties with better yield potential.
A Study on Effect of Demographic Factors on the Achievement of Secondary School Students in the Punjab, Pakistan

Abstract: This paper investigates the effect of demographic factors on the achievement of secondary school students in the Punjab. The demographic factors of the students that are considered inthe study were gender (male/female), urban/rural, family size and income level. The study was conducted in Punjab, 30 boys and 30 girl’s secondary schools were selected and from each 15 urban and15 rural schools were selected. The sample of student consisted of 25 male and 25 female from each secondary school. The instruments used for data collection were questionnaires and results of S.S.Cexamination 2007. The researcher visited all the sampled secondary schools and collected the data. It was tabulated, analyzed and interpreted by using SPSS software version 16 for chi-square, Pearson’s correlation and T-test techniques. The major conclusions of the study drawn from the analysis of data were: (i) Female students excelled from the male students. (ii). Students of urban secondary schools secured more positions in S.S.C examination 2007 than rural secondary schools in the Punjab. (iii) The number of students passed in the S.S.C annual examination 2007 of urban secondary schools was better than the rural secondary schools. (iv). Family size affected the achievement of the students. (v). Financial pressure left disappointing effects on the performance of hard up learners. All the null hypotheses of the study were rejected showing that the demographic factors have significant relationship with thestudents’ achievement.
