Muslim diversity: Islam and local tradition in Java and Sulawesi, Indonesia

Abstract: Based on some historical and anthropological accounts, this article examines a dynamic interplay between Islam and local tradition in Indonesia with special reference to Java and Sulawesi. It explains how local Muslims differed in their interpretation and application of Islam. It looks at processes of religious change as a world religion interacts with local forces. The “localization” of Islam was a constant feature in the expansion of Islam beyond the Arab homeland, including Southeast Asia. Based on the framework of ‘practical Islam’ , rather than ‘normative Islam’ , and on the framework of both accommodation and conflict between shari’ah and adat as a whole system, rather than as separate entities, it provides a greater variety of Islamic beliefs and experiences. Comparatively , Javanese people have been more diverse than Sulawesi people in terms of religious spectrum; Muslims in Java have incorporated animism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam into their culture system. Stories about the nine saints show how early Islamic preachers sought to accommodate Islam with local traditions. In Sulawesi, Dato ri Bandang and the other teachers, representing the elite aristocracy who attempted to Islamize the kingdoms and the people alike and Syeikh Yusuf , representing a strict kind of Islam, show diversity but tends to suggest a less diverse picture, when compared to Java. Despite internal diversity in Java as well as in Sulawesi, Java has remained more open and tolerant with cultural diversity, whereas Sulawesi has increasingly become more legalistic.

Abstract: Quality factors for protons and helium particles has determined for cell inactivation using linear energy transfer. The quality has also been investigated as a function for other physical parameters, such as mean free path and effective charge for protons and helium particles, for a better interpretation to the effectiveness of these charged particles in V79 cells. Explanation of quality is clearly illustrated in terms of the average dis-tance of energy deposition events in biological systems.
Knowledge-Based Banking: the Bankers’Experience on OKS (Online Knowledge Sharing)

Abstract: This paper outlines the results from a web-based survey of first time users of a bankers online knowledge sharing. Palmer′s web metrics were used to investigate the effects of key website characteristics on intention to return, satisfaction and self-efficacy. Partial least squares estimation was used to estimate both the measurement and structural parameters in our structural equation model. Statistical significance of the main relationships provided strong empirical support for author conceptual framework.
A Comparative Analysis on Bankers’Perceptions on Islamic Banking

Abstract: This research was conducted to gauge the perceptions of employees, in both Islamic banks and conventional banks, of Islamic products and services, of the training and experience gained in Islamic banking, as well as of the future potential of Islamic banking in Malaysia. Questionnaires were distributed to bankers dealing with Islamic banking in the northern part of Malaysia. The results revealed that bankers in Islamic banks have more positive perceptions on the above issues. Interestingly, most of the bankers did not possess a relevant academic background or relevant experience in Islamic banking before embarking on this career. The bankers also claimed that they have very limited knowledge in this area prior to working with the banks, thus the issue of the availability of well-trained and skilled employees must be addressed critically by the government, industry players and educationists for the sustainable growth of Islamic banking in Malaysia, and to meet the set target by the year 2010.
Detection of Formaldehyde in Water: A Shape-Effect on the Plasmonic Sensing Properties of the Gold Nanoparticles

Abstract: The effect of morphology on the plasmonic sensing of the presence of formaldehyde in water by gold nanostructures has been investigated. The gold nanostructures with two different morphologies, namely spherical and rod, were prepared using a seed-mediated method. In typical results, it was found that the plasmonic properties of gold nanostructures were very sensitive to the presence of formaldehyde in their surrounding medium by showing the change in both the plasmonic peaks position and the intensity. Spherical nanoparticles (GNS), for example, indicated an increase in the sensitivity when the size was increased from 25 to 35 nm and dramatically decreased when the size was further increased. An m value, the ratio between plasmonic peak shift and refractive index change, as high as 36.5 nm/RIU (refractive index unit) was obtained so far. An expanded sensing mode to FD was obtained when gold nanostructures with nanorods morphology (GNR) were used because of the presence of two plasmonic modes for response probing. However, in the present study, effective plasmonic peak shift was not observed due to the intense plasmonic coupling of closely packed nanorod structures on the surface. Nevertheless, the present results at least provide a potential strategy for response enhancement via shape-effects. High performance plasmonic sensors could be obtained if controlled arrays of nanorods can be prepared on the surface.
DGA Interpretation of Oil Filled Transformer Condition Diagnosis

Abstract: DGA is one of the most recent techniques developed to diagnose the fault condition on oil filled insulationtransformers. There are more than 6 known different methods of DGA fault interpretation technique and so thereis the likelihood that they may vary in their interpretations. A series of combined interpretation methods that candetermine the power transformer condition faults in one assessment is therefore needed. This paper presents acomputer program- based system developed to combine four DGA assessment techniques; Rogers Ratio Method, IECBasic Ratio Method, Duval Triangle method and Key Gas Method. An easy to use Graphic User Interface was designedto give a visual display of the four techniques. The result shows that this assessment method can increase the accuracyof DGA methods by up to 20% and the no prediction result had been reduced down to 0%.
Biodiesel Production from Rubber Seed Oil Using A Limestone Based Catalyst  [PDF]

Abstract:

This paper presents the potential of limestone based catalyst for transesterification of high free fatty acid (FFA) rubber seed oil (RSO). Pre-calcinated limestone known as clinker was activated using methanol and transesterification was performed under reflux with constant stirring. Mineral composition of the catalyst was analysed using x-ray fluorescence (XRF) with in build x-ray diffraction (XRD). The rubber seed oil was obtained using both microwave and soxhlet extraction using hexane as solvent. FFA content and fatty acid methyl ester content were determined using gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results showed an efficient conversion (up to 96.9%) of high FFA rubber seed oil to biodiesel. The results suggest that the catalyst employed in this work is not negatively affected by moisture and free fatty acids and can be recycled very easily without significant loss in its activity. The highest conversion of 96.9% was achieved from catalyst activated at 700°C, with catalyst loading of 5 wt. %; methanol to oil molar ratio of 5:1; reaction temperature of 65°C and reaction time of 4 hours. The biodiesel produced in this work is within the limits of specification described by American standard test method (ASTM D6751).


Epistemological Belief and Learning Approaches of Students in Higher Institutions of Learning in Malaysia

Abstract: This is an investigation of the students’ beliefs about the nature of knowledge or epistemological beliefs, and the relation of these beliefs on their learning approaches. Students chosen as samples of the study were from both public and private higher institutions of learning in Malaysia. The instrument used in the study consists of 49 items measuring students’ epistemological beliefs and 20 items on their learning approaches. Items on epistemological belief were adapted and modified from Schommer’s Epistemological Questionnaire (1990) and Schraw, Bendixen and Dunkle (2000) Epistemic Beliefs Inventory that assesses students' beliefs about simple knowledge, certain knowledge, quick learning, and fixed ability to learn. Items on learning approaches were adapted from Bigg’s forty-two-item Study Process Questionnaire (SPQ), designed for tertiary-level students. The instrument was administered to 1405 students of higher institutions of learning both public and private. Differences in epistemological beliefs among students of these higher institutions, ethnic and between genders were examined.
A simple route to vertical array of quasi-1D ZnO nanofilms on FTO surfaces: 1D-crystal growth of nanoseeds under ammonia-assisted hydrolysis process

Abstract: A simple method for the synthesis of ZnO nanofilms composed of vertical array of quasi-1D ZnO nanostructures (quasi-NRs) on the surface was demonstrated via a 1D crystal growth of the attached nanoseeds under a rapid hydrolysis process of zinc salts in the presence of ammonia at room temperature. In a typical procedure, by simply controlling the concentration of zinc acetate and ammonia in the reaction, a high density of vertically oriented nanorod-like morphology could be successfully obtained in a relatively short growth period (approximately 4 to 5 min) and at a room-temperature process. The average diameter and the length of the nanostructures are approximately 30 and 110 nm, respectively. The as-prepared quasi-NRs products were pure ZnO phase in nature without the presence of any zinc complexes as confirmed by the XRD characterisation. Room-temperature optical absorption spectroscopy exhibits the presence of two separate excitonic characters inferring that the as-prepared ZnO quasi-NRs are high-crystallinity properties in nature. The mechanism of growth for the ZnO quasi-NRs will be proposed. Due to their simplicity, the method should become a potential alternative for a rapid and cost-effective preparation of high-quality ZnO quasi-NRs nanofilms for use in photovoltaic or photocatalytics applications. The Credibility of Television in Disseminating Agricultural Information to Farmers in Malaysia

Abstract: Agriculture and television are two different things that can be combined in many ways. Television has been utilized to further intensify agricultural development in Malaysia. This study attempts to discover the credibility of television when disseminating agricultural information to Malaysian farmers. A total of 400 farmers from four states in Malaysia were chosen as the respondents in this study. It was found that farmers view television as a credible source for disseminating clear and understandable agricultural information. In addition, it was considered credible due to its ability to provide up-to-date, unbiased and factual agricultural information. However, television is seen as less credible in terms of providing information at the right time, and is unable to provide all the necessary information.
