The influence of ageing on the morphological and optical properties of thin TPD films

Abstract: This paper presents the influence of ageing on the morphological and optical properties of TPD (N, N’ - Bis (3 - methylphenil) - N, N’ diphenylbenzidine) thin films. Understanding of the nucleation mechanism and growth dynamics of molecular thin films is pivotal for controlling their morphology and the film interfacial properties, while the influence of ageing is essential for the potential commercial utilization. Initially, thin films were prepared using a combinatorial physical vapour deposition (CPVD) method, following a cosine-like distribution profile of thickness along monocrystal silica substrate. Morphology of thin films was investigated by using optical (OM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The link between optical properties and the resulting thin film morphology was made by spatially correlated morphological (AFM and OM) and optical (absorption and photoluminescence) measurements. The changes in the absorption and photoluminescence spectra are strongly connected to the ageing-induced changes in the microstructure of thin films. Regardless of morphological and differences in the film thickness (two orders of magnitude), all films show amorphous arrangement just after the deposition. Ageing of these films in regular atmosphere conditions results in morphological and changes in optical properties induced by the crystallization. The crystallization of initially amorphous samples was also confirmed by the differentional scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements. All results indicate the limited possibility of using TPD films in organic electroluminescent devices.
The structure and glass transition behavior of PLLA under the influence of gamma radiation

Abstract: The influence of gamma radiation on the structure and glass transition behavior of poly-L-lactide (PLLA) has been studied. Since PLLA exposed to high-energy radiation in the presence of air is prone to chain scission reactions and large degradation, changes in molecular weight were obtained by the gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Alterations in the glass transition behaviour were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The apparent activation energy, ΔH*, for the glass transition was determined on the basis of the heating rate dependence of the glass transition temperature, Tg. Our findings support the fact that chain scission is the main reason for the decrease of Tg and ΔH* with the absorbed dose. At low doses, despite large changes in molecular weight, only small alterations are observed in the glass transition temperature and apparent activation energy. Further increase in the absorbed dose introduces not only significant changes in the molecular weight but also in the glass transition temperature and the activation energy. Such glass transition behaviour is a manifestation of a well-known effect of molecular weight on Tg, postulated by the Fox-Flory equation. However, all the observed alterations are small and tolerable at absorbed doses required for sterilization (up to 25 kGy in most circumstances). Furthermore, this study reveals that the radiation-induced changes in the molecular weight and the glass transition temperature occur in a predictable and fairly accurate manner. Therefore, gamma radiation can be used not only for sterilization but also for tailoring desirable end-use properties of PLLA based implants.
Oxidation of hydroxide ions at platinum modified zeolite electrode

Abstract: NaX zeolite was modified by platinum via impregnation/thermal decomposition technique, using Pt(II)-acetylacetonate in acetone as an impregnating solution. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and cyclic voltammetry methods. The mixture of modified zeolite and 10 wt % of carbon black, in a form of thin layer, was pasted to a glassy carbon surface. With this mixture as the electrode material hydroxide ions oxidation was studied by cyclic voltammetry. The response of modified zeolite electrodes was compared with bare platinum electrode and platinum electrode covered with Nafion film.

Abstract: Fluctuation poses an extremely important problem in the field of sales management and, therefore, it is necessary to research continually its impact on the company as a whole. The aim of this paper is to determine the frequency of fluctuation among the sales staff and sales managers through empirical research while also determining the key factors contributing to a decision to leave the company. Results of research conducted on a sample of sales managers show their belief in the honesty of reasons reported by the sales staff for leaving the company, the importance of financial factors as well as numerous material and non-material instruments of motivation employed in order to keep the fluctuation under control because it creates expenses for the company and increases their own workload, among other reasons. Most sales staff reported a wish for career advancement as their primary motivation for changing jobs, claiming that they are prepared to inform their superiors of that decision without hiding the real reasons etc. From this research it is possible to observe both perspectives – that of sales managers as well as that of the sales staff they manage. Their perspectives contain certain differences, which are understandable considering their respective position within the organization but also reflect human bias.

Abstract: The loss of proper contact of the adjacent teeth, which usually occurs as a result of caries or tooth extraction, can lead to serious consequences on oral tissues health as well as on the function of complete oral system, unless timely repaired. It often happens that the irregular contact of the tooth due to inadequate filling remains unnoticed by the patient and dentist. Also, if the loss of contact caused by caries or after tooth extraction is not treated, it often leads to inclination of adjacent teeth and their traumatic contact in relation to the antagonists. If this situation remains for a long time, it can cause significant disorder for which rehabilitation, complex therapy and long period of time are required. The aim of this study was to point out the proper procedure for the treatment of complex lesions of teeth and adjacent tissues, caused by extraction of the second lower right premolar and impaired contact between the first molar and first premolar.

Abstract: Influence of weather conditions and seed age on fresh and dry biomass production, field germination, seed yield and 1000 seed weight of field pea were investigated in field trials during two years at two locations of East Croatia (Osijek and Vinkovci). Seed of Timo“ cultivar 9 and 21 month old was used for sowing. In the investigation of the years influence, significantly higher (p=0.01) average green mass yield (57,035 t/ha), dry matter yield (9.796 t/ha) and 1000 seed weight (129.7 g) was found in the first year of the investigation. On theaverage for years, significantly higher field germination (87.0%) and seed yield (2.173 t/ha) at p=0.01, and green mass yield (55.728 t/ha) and 1000 seed weight (130.1 g) at p=0.05 were found at location Osijek. Seed of 21 month old had higher (p=0.01) average green mass yield (64.376 t/ha), dry matter yield (10.934 t/ha) and 1000 seed weight (134 g) but significantly lower field germination (76.4%) at location Vinkovci in the investigation of seed age and location influences during 2005 year..

Abstract: The research of light and substrate role in leaf photosynthetic pigments, free proline content and flower quality indices in two gerbera cultivars (Vino and Ruby Red) showed that flower stems were longer in additional lighting treatment, coco’s peat amended with rice chaff and cultivar Ruby Red. Chlorophyll b concentration was in negative relation to leaf proline content and correlated to longer flower stems. In general, the higher leaf total chlorophyll concentration was related to longer stems, and such stems have had larger flower heads. Flower head diameter did not differ significantly between cultivars; it depended on light regime, substrate and their interaction.
Effects of Genotype, Seed Age and KNO3 on Germination of Radicchio (Cichorium intybus L.) and Endive (Cichorium endivia L.) Seed

Abstract: After purchasing seed it often happens that all the seed is not used during one season, but they are stored for a couple of years. The aim of this study was to examine whether germination of radicchio and endive is still high enough after longer storage. We also wanted to define seed vigor in relation to the year of production and variety, and whether pretreatment with KNO3 could improve germination of older seed of radicchio and endive.The seed of three varieties of radicchio (‘Pallarossa’, ‘Verona’ and ‘Pandizucchero’) and three varieties of endive (‘Dje ja glava’, ‘Pankalierka’ and ‘Escariol uta’), from five seasons of certification (06/07, 07/08 08/09, 09/10 and 10/11) was tested.The following seed traits were analyzed: 1000 seed weight, moisture, germination rate, standard germination test, seed electrical conductivity, and the amount of absorbed water per gram of seed for 24 hours. Seed was germinated in two soaking treatments: in tap water with cooling pre-treatment, and KNO3. Based on the results, it was concluded that treatment with KNO3 significantly increases the standard germination of radicchio, as compared with water, and does not improve the germination of endive seed, but on the contrary, it has a negative effect. In both plant species, conductivity does not increase with seed age, because the oldest seed did not show the highest EC.In order to fully assess the impact of aging on seed vigor in tested plant species it is necessary to conduct further research.
