Variación altitudinal en diversidad de Arctiidae y Saturniidae (Lepidoptera) en un bosque de niebla Colombiano

Abstract: the richness and diversity of organisms is associated with environmental changes and factors such as altitude, determining the configuration of patterns of distribution of groups and species. in this study we compared the distribution and the richness of arctiidae and saturniidae (lepidoptera) along an altitudinal gradient (1448-2068 m elev) in a cloud forest of the department of cauca, colombia. these lepidopterans possess richness and life histories that are considerably different. we selected three altitudinal stations and in each one seven sampling events of six days each were conducted, between 6:00p.m. and 6:00a.m. we captured 70 species, 55 arctiidae and 15 saturniidae. the richness of saturniidae decreased significantly with increasing altitude (kruskal-wallis p = 0.009), while the greatest richness of arctiidae was at the middle altitude (kruskal-wallis p = 0.002). alpha diversity had similar tendencies to that of richness for both families. beta diversity in saturniidae showed greater similarity between stations than the arctiidae. factors like resistance to environmental changes and the breadth of host plants of each group could explain the difference in the altitudinal distribution of diversity in these families.

Abstract: Each of the Al atoms in the title compound, [Al2(CH3)5(C15H15FNO)], is four-coordinated in a distorted tetrahedral geometry. The dimethylaluminium centre is bound by the N and the O atoms of the (2-dimethylaminophenyl)(2-fluorophenyl)methanolate ligand. The second Al atom is bound by the methanolate O atom and by three methyl C atoms. The crystal studied was a racemic twin with a 0.4 (2):0.6 (2) domain ratio.

Abstract: La riqueza y diversidad de organismos está asociada a cambios ambientales y a factores como la altitud, determinando el surgimiento de patrones de distribución de grupos y especies. En este estudio se comparó la distribución de la riqueza de Arctiidae y Saturniidae (Lepidoptera) en un gradiente altitudinal (1448-2068 msnm) de un bosque nublado del departamento del Cauca, Colombia. Estos lepidópteros poseen riqueza y características en sus historias de vida marcadamente diferentes. Se seleccionaron tres estaciones altitudinales y en cada caso se realizaron siete sesiones de muestreo de seis días cada una, entre las 6:00p.m. y las 6:00a.m. Se capturaron 70 especies, 55 de Arctiidae y 15 de Saturniidae. La riqueza de Saturniidae disminuyó significativamente con el aumento de la altitud (Kruskal-Wallis P = 0,009), mientras que en Arctiidae la mayor riqueza se presentó en la altitud media (Kruskal-Wallis P = 0,002). La diversidad alfa presentó tendencias similares a las registradas con la riqueza para las dos familias. La diversidad beta para Saturniidae mostró mayor similitud entre estaciones que en Arctiidae. Factores como resistencia a cambios ambientales y la amplitud de plantas hospederas, podrían explicar la diferencia en la distribución altitudinal de la diversidad en estas familias. Abstract: When evaluating medical tests or biomarkers for disease classification, the area under the receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve is a widely used performance metric that does not require us to commit to a specific decision threshold. For the same type of evaluations, a different metric known as the average precision (AP) is used much more widely in the information retrieval literature. We study both metrics in some depths in order to elucidate their difference and relationship. More specifically, we explain mathematically why the AP may be more appropriate if the earlier part of the ROC curve is of interest. We also address practical matters, deriving an expression for the asymptotic variance of the AP, as well as providing real-world examples concerning the evaluation of protein biomarkers for prostate cancer and the assessment of digital versus film mammography for breast cancer screening.
On the underestimation of model uncertainty by Bayesian K-nearest neighbors

Abstract: When using the K-nearest neighbors method, one often ignores uncertainty in the choice of K. To account for such uncertainty, Holmes and Adams (2002) proposed a Bayesian framework for K-nearest neighbors (KNN). Their Bayesian KNN (BKNN) approach uses a pseudo-likelihood function, and standard Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques to draw posterior samples. Holmes and Adams (2002) focused on the performance of BKNN in terms of misclassification error but did not assess its ability to quantify uncertainty. We present some evidence to show that BKNN still significantly underestimates model uncertainty.

Abstract: general practitioners are frequently confronted with disturbances of the hepatic tests. it is therefore very important to be able to rule out the more usual alteration causes through basic tests such as biochemical determinations, serological tests and ultrasound examination of the liver. other causes such as the effects of certain drugs or the presence of a coincidental pathology must be taken into account as well. having a full-made account of the patient′s clinical history as well as performing the due physical explorations is therefore most useful to this purpose. we show a case of hyperthyroidism related to amiodarone treatment as the responsible for the disturbances of the hepatic tests.

Abstract: The two Al atoms in the title compound, [Al2(CH3)5(C23H20NO)], are four-coordinated in a distorted tetrahedral environment. The coordination of one Al atom includes three methyl-C atoms and the O atom from the ligand, whereas the second Al atom is surrounded by the O atom and one N atom from the ligand as well as by two methyl-C atoms. In the ligand, the dihedral angle between the two phenyl rings in the 9,10-dihydrophenanthren unit is 20.64 (12)°.

The molecule displays an E configuration about the imine C=N double bond, with the dihedral angle between the two benzene rings being 86.5°. The packing is stabilized by three different C—H...π interactions.
