Abstract: We know that every human being needs to live with other people, joining to society. But not always it happens with elderly that live in Long Stay Institution (LSI). Many times these elderly aresurrounded by their selves emotions and limitations, get stuck to their selves thoughts of isolation, miss, rejection, fear, fragility, feelings that prevent them from making the most of life and enjoying it like something precious. They feel inferior and less important because they don’t have sense and happiness that make them see the life with other eyes. One of the factors that induce to emptiness, depression and fear of the death it’s can not count on relatives and friends in all moments, principally during the physicand psychic disease. In face of the reality lived by 52 elderly (30 women and 22 men) resident in Três Cora es – MG, it’s arisen the need to promote the healthy aging, improving the quality of life and selfesteem through social contact and participation in activities directed to the work and leisure in the institution, by means of professional able to identify protecting, maintenance and recovery factors for health of elderly that live in LSI.

Engelhardt, Eliasz;Moreira, Denise M.;Laks, Jerson;Cavalcanti, José Luiz Sá;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2005000200001
Abstract: objective: to compare magnetic resonance proton spectroscopic with clinical data and to propose a spectroscopic staging of alzheimer's disease (ad). method: subjects (n=46), normals (12) and with ad (34), paired to age (cdr0-cdr3); ad diagnosis according to dsm-iv/nincds-adrda criteria; 1h-mrs with signa horizon lx-ge, 1.5t; single voxel at hippocampal region/hcr and posterior cingulate area/pca. results: statistically significant decrease (p<0.01) only of naa/cr - at hcr among the cdr0, cdr1+cdr2, and cdr3, and at pca between cdr0 and cdr1+cdr2 in relation to cdr3. conclusion: the hcr is the first to show naa reduction (cdr1). the pca suffers later (cdr3). these values decline progressively according to the severity stages. considering the disparities between the hcr and pca it is possible to suggest a spectroscopic (metabolite) staging (ms) of ad, as follows: ms0 (~cdr0)=both normal hcr and pca, ms1-2 (~cdr1-2)=abnormal hcr and normal pca, and ms3 (~cdr3)=both abnormal hcr and pca. these results make possible the early diagnosis, to follow the degenerative process throughout the course, and to suggest a spectroscopic staging related to the clinical stages of ad.

Business Management Dynamics , 2012,
Abstract: The objective of this study is to characterize and analyze the farmers and commercial personnel's actions with relation to the social responsibility of pesticides' commercialization in the South Region of Brazil, specifically in the region of Caxias do Sul. Companies whose principles are based on the social responsibility and social environmental consciousness are usually more respected by customers, suppliers and the society in general. The research method is exploratory and the data was obtained by 90 questionnaires applied to farmers and 30 to employees of pesticides supplier companies in Caxias do Sul. The results have shown that despite some positive factors, many negative factors still prevail with respect to social responsibility, such as a deficiency in the companies' human resources management

Abstract: melkersson-rosenthal syndrome (mrs) consists of persistent or recurrent orofacial edema, relapsing facial palsy and fissured tongue. the complete triad of symptoms is uncommon, varying from 8 to 25%. the presentation of only one symptom is more common. the most frequent complaint is facial edema and enlargement of the lips. we describe a case of a 17-year-old brazilian girl with limited edema of the lower lip and fissured tongue due to mrs. her complaints had started two years before. she referred previous clinical treatments without success. we proposed intralesional injection of triamcinolone at 20 mg every 15 days associated with oral clofazimine at 50 mg/day for three months. the lip became normal after four triamcinolone injections. recent studies have considered mrs a granulomatous disease, and possibly the initial presentation of crohn?s disease in orofacial area of some patients. mrs patients, therefore, should be screened and monitored for gastrointestinal symptoms. corticosteroid treatment seems to be effective in reducing lip enlargement. we discus the clinical features of this disease, the treatment, and the importance of corticosteroid therapy in cases of mrs-related facial palsy.

Abstract: the guava weevil, conotrachelus psidii marshall, is a severe pest of guava fruits in brazil. the mated females lay eggs in small unripe fruits. as the fruits develop, so do the larvae. mature larvae abandon the ripe fruits and pupate underground. larval feeding causes extensive damage to the fruit. we conducted this study to understand the weevil biology under laboratory conditions. weevil-infested ripe guava were collected in orchards and placed inside cages with moist sand. after emergence, the adults were individually placed in acrylic boxes with food and water. recently emerged adults were also placed inside plastic boxes for mating, after which the females were isolated. the eggs were placed on moist filter paper in petri dishes containing slices of ripe guava fruit. egg-hatching was monitored daily and the number of larval instars established by measuring the width of their head capsules. the egg incubation period lasted 3.9 ± 0.58 days. the larval period was 16.0 ± 3.80 days and four instars were identified. after burrowing in the soil, the mature larvae (pre-pupa) remained underground for 142.0 ± 32.00 days and then pupated. the pupal period lasted 16.0 ± 0.90 days, but the adults remained underground for a further 34.0 ± 18.00 days. after emerging from the soil, adults lived 148.0 ± 89.00 days. fecundity varied from 539 to 793 eggs/female, and the percent egg hatch was 96.5%.

Abstract: the objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of temperature on the reduction in the soaking period of soybean seeds for the electric conductivity test. seeds were harvested at the r8 stage and 15, 30 and 45 days after r8 and stored in a cold room until physiological quality tests were performed. the electric conductivity test was carried out using the traditional methodology, with four replications of 50 seeds imbibed in water at 25oc for 24 hours, and two other methodologies consisting of 20 replications of 10 seeds imbibed for 10, 30, 60 and 120 minutes at 32oc or 40oc. the results indicated that the increase in the soaking temperature decreases the soaking period to identify soybean seeds with different vigor levels; the electric conductivity test at 32 or 40oc for 10, 30, 60 and 120 minutes is efficient for rapid evaluation of soybean seed quality and the soaking period of 10 minutes at 32 or 40oc already permits classification of seed lots according to theirs vigor level by the electric conductivity test.
