Familial Relationship of Migrants and Remittances Behavior: Theory and Evidence from Ecuador  [PDF]

This paper develops a simple analytical model with altruistically motivated remittances to analyze the determinants of remittances using household data from Ecuador. The model predicts that migrant remittance behavior and household migration size are non-monotonically correlated. The empirical work suggests that migrant remittances are a non-increasing function of the number of migrants within the household. If there is a positive selection of migrants, then one would expect that the forgone household income due to migration is higher than when there is a negative selection. According to the Ecuadorian data of households with at least 1 migrant, prior to migration the individuals who left had a higher education level than those relatives left behind. The average years of schooling of the migrants are 3.5 years, higher than the non-migrants. It seems that when migration size changes from 2 to 3 and from 3 to 4 migrants within the same household, the forgone household income due to migration might have a positive effect on altruistically motivated remittances, which compensates for the negative effect of the increased number of migrants on the individual amount of remittances (Nash assumption). The results of allowing a non-linear relationship between migrant remittance behavior and household migration are partially distinguished from those reached when there is a linear relationship and also contrast with the predictions of rent-seeking literature. Moreover, it shows that Ecuadorian migrants who moved to Spain were less likely to remit and remit less than those migrants whose destination country was the United States.

Abstract: the theories developed on teaching models and instructional designs have been analyzed by academics who are interested in research on education and by teachers who are dedicated to the complex task of imparting instruction. in this respect, teaching models and instructional designs are theoretical products that always offer the possibility of delving further into the problems of education. the purpose of this study is to arrive at a comparative analysis of teaching models and designs through two manuscripts: models for teaching by b. joyce, m. weil and e. calhoun, and instructional design by charles m. reigeluth. to compare them, the author has developed a series of criteria that make it possible to distinguish the essential characteristics of each work and to identify connections between fundamental elements, such as content, methodology, resources, the teacher and actual circumstances in the classroom. although not intended as a conclusive document, since education is a field that is constantly changing and being updated, the article does attempt to provide new elements to develop educational experiences.

Abstract: the reproductive system of plusiotis costata blanchard is described. the male system consist of two testes, each testis with six follicles, two vasa deferentia, two accessory glands, ejaculatory bulb, ejaculatory duct, and complex aedeagus. the female system is formed by two ovaries, each with six ovarioles and two lateral oviducts, the common oviduct, bursa copulatrix, spermatheca with its gland, and genital chamber with four pairs of genital plates. information on copulation behavior and biannual life cycle of p. costata in captivity is also included.

Abstract: the cost of capital is a key input to obtain the fundamental value of an asset or project. in this paper, the cost of capital for the chilean wine sector was estimated through the capital asset pricing model (capm). we briefly discuss the difficulties that arise when this equilibrium model is used in practice, and the most recent empirical literature dealing with the estimation of the systematic risk coefficient (beta). from a sample of chilean wine enterprises, using historical and market information, we found that the cost of capital for the wine sector activities in chile was of 8.9% per year in real terms

Abstract: contemporary historiography on independence has prioritized the analysis of political culture in the passage from the societies of the ancien régime to nineteenth-century political modernity. this renewed interest focuses primarily on analyzing the press, the configuration of public spaces, and networks of communication. this article examines the political discourse of the elite and the image that they constructed of the popular sectors. it does so by using the daily peruvian newspaper, el investigador, between the years 1813 and 1814 as its main primary source. the systematic reading and analysis of this newspaper allows us to show the elite's fear regarding the popular sectors, the conflicts between church and state, and the conflicts within the state apparatus over the degree to which authority should be centralized, all of which reflected the break down of the viceroyal order.

Abstract: this study evaluated didactic strategies that help to promote logic mathematic thought in initial schools. it was done in a country school of trujillo, venezuela,?? during october 2005 and june 2006. the methodology was action research, with and exploratory description of teachers pedagogical skills related to logic mathematic thought. an exclusive plan to perform and evaluate several strategies was designed. these strategies were based on piaget theories. beyond the strategies applied, there were verbal actions, games and reversibility strategies. the development of processes of classification, numerical conservation, increase in vocabulary, use or argumentative forms in problem solution, satisfaction for cooperative work and development of autonomy in the school activities were shown.

Abstract: this article is the result of different experiences and reflections and of having been part of several teacher training and educational research projects, within the unam and in other institutions. it tackles the problem of teaching as one of the universities’ most important functions. starting from an overall view of teaching, its conditions and possibilities, the author describes its main features, with a special emphasis on its complexity and professionality. the author also analyzes the link between teaching and research in seizing or building knowledge, based on specific types and perspectives of educational research. he then draws up a teaching proposal featured as research work as a possible -and desirable- option for higher education. in short, this work focuses on the need and relevance of research as a way to bring up changes withing teaching in higher education.

Abstract: this article has as purpose to document and to question the nature of educational assessment and of the learning in classroom work, and of its consequences in curriculum and institutional development; to uncover the intentions and duties that should fulfill assessment at school taking into account the complexity and the transcendence of its application for the teaching duty, but also its educational and social implications. the author also explores an aspect that has been rarely taken into account in the studies about assessment: the psychopedagogical conditions that determine its role for the perfect working of every educational act. the author also deals with the pedagogical nature of the student's portfolio as a tool for learning assessment, and also its concrete actualization within and out of the classroom. those pedagogical postulates are experienced substantially in a teaching experience following the modality of didactics laboratory, the focus of this paper.

Abstract: strong politicization of society that emerged by the spanish crisis and the discussions that were then generated in cádiz put in evidence the importance of the press and political discourse in full revolutionary situation. a thorough analysis of the journal of courts allows us to observe the existence of exclusion of americans in cádiz, even, this trend can be found at speeches exposed in the press in lima between 1810 and 1814. in this regard, this research seeks to warn these discussions of popular in the meetings of the courts and various newspapers circulated in the peru problems. this study concludes the disseminate a reformist discourse elites sought only the maintenance of its legitimacy and obvious social and political exclusion of popular sectors.
