Land Productivity Changes in a Trade Liberalization Environment: Mexico under NAFTA  [PDF]
Diego de la Fuente Stevens
Theoretical Economics Letters (TEL) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/tel.2014.43030
Abstract:

The focus of this research is the understanding of a fundamental aspect of the Mexican agricultural sector: the evolution of land productivity and the sources behind its changes. The study takes place in a period that runs from 1990 to 2011, a period of large structural transformations in the Mexican economy. The research offers answers regarding how the sector has adapted in terms of crop selection. Results show that a large share of total agricultural land productivity changes happened due to intrinsic changes in crop productivity; while these changes have different sources, most of them were the result of changes in production patters across states. Furthermore, around one quarter of total productivity, changes resulted from a better selection of crops in terms of productivity levels.

Immunization against Lamb Haemonchosis with a Recombinant Somatic Antigen of Haemonchus contortus (rHcp26/23)

Veterinary Medicine International , 2010, DOI: 10.4061/2010/852146
Abstract: Haemonchosis, caused by the abomasal nematode Haemonchus contortus, is a common parasitic disease of sheep. Our previous results showed that a soluble fraction from adult stages of the nematode (p26/23) induced partial protection against challenge. Recombinant DNA technology was applied to obtain a synthetic protein (rHcp26/23). Immunological assays (ELISA, Western blotting, and immunolocalization), using sera from lambs immunized with p26/23, confirmed the identity of the recombinant protein and demonstrated that the synthetic protein is equivalent to the purified protein employed in the previous immunoprophylaxis studies. Vaccination of lambs with 300 g of rHcp26/23 and Freund's adjuvant elicited a notable specific antibody response. Immunization did not induce any significant protection after challenge with 16000 infective larvae of H. contortus, and comparable values for parasite faecal egg output, packed cell volume, and abomasal parasite burdens were found in vaccinated and control animals.
A New Crested Pterosaur from the Early Cretaceous of Spain: The First European Tapejarid (Pterodactyloidea: Azhdarchoidea)

Abstract: Background The Tapejaridae is a group of unusual toothless pterosaurs characterized by bizarre cranial crests. From a paleoecological point of view, frugivorous feeding habits have often been suggested for one of its included clades, the Tapejarinae. So far, the presence of these intriguing flying reptiles has been unambiguously documented from Early Cretaceous sites in China and Brazil, where pterosaur fossils are less rare and fragmentary than in similarly-aged European strata. Methodology/Principal Findings Europejara olcadesorum gen. et sp. nov. is diagnosed by a unique combination of characters including an unusual caudally recurved dentary crest. It represents the oldest known member of Tapejaridae and the oldest known toothless pterosaur. The new taxon documents the earliest stage of the acquisition of this anatomical feature during the evolutionary history of the Pterodactyloidea. This innovation may have been linked to the development of new feeding strategies. Conclusion/Significance The discovery of Europejara in the Barremian of the Iberian Peninsula reveals an earlier and broader global distribution of tapejarids, suggesting a Eurasian origin of this group. It adds to the poorly known pterosaur fauna of the Las Hoyas locality and contributes to a better understanding of the paleoecology of this Konservat-Lagerst?tte. Finally, the significance of a probable contribution of tapejarine tapejarids to the early angiosperm dispersal is discussed.

Abstract: the activities of health professionals, whether from the aspect of the student, and later in clinical practice, research or education, are intensive in information. internet has become the most dynamic means to find and retrieve biomedical information since the emergence of computerized databases. there are two factors driving this development of informational competence: the first one is the need to perform successfully in the "information and knowledge scene", the second one is the emergence of the practice of medicine and evidence-based nursing. informational competence has a repercussion on the quality of documentary production and quality of care. the present article describes the basic elements that make up informational competence for health professionals grouping them into three sections: knowledge, skills and attitudes.
Haemonchus contortus-Sheep relationship: A review
Angulo-Cubillán,Francisco J; García-Coiradas,Leticia; Cuquerella,Montserrat; de la Fuente,Concepción; Alunda,José M;
Revista Científica , 2007,
Abstract: haemonchosis, caused by the abomasal nematode haemonchus contortus, is among the most relevant parasitic diseases of small ruminants all over the world. the infections are responsible for anemic and bad digestion/absorption syndromes causing the death of severely infected animals in acute cases and the reduction of production scores in the chronic forms of the disease. the keys for the appearance of the disease include the biological behavior of the helminth and mechanisms of pathogenesis, besides the host?s response. the updated knowledge of these aspects would result in a higher efficiency of diagnostic and control methods, thus reducing the risks of appearance of the disease. in the present review, several aspects of the sheep - h. contortus relationship are analyzed with the aim of reducing the impact of this parasitosis on livestock health and productivity.
Más de treinta a?os de drogas ilegales en Espa?a: una amarga historia con algunos consejos para el futuro

Abstract: the phenomenon of illicit drug use in spain during the last thirty years has been marked by the extremely serious consequences of heroin use (mainly injecting). more than 300.000 persons were treated for heroin dependence, 20.000-25.000 died from overdose, 100.000 became infected with hiv through drug injection and quite more with hepatitis virus. some of these consequences can be attributed to the delay in the implementation of effective interventions, such as methadone maintenance treatment (mmt). currently, the decreasing number of injectors and the positive effects of interventions, mainly mmt, have led to an important decline of the mentioned health problems. however, overdose mortality remains very high (more than 700 deceased per year), prevalence of both hiv and hcv are still high among injectors, and consequences of chronic liver diseases are emerging. in the last years the use of cocaine and associated problems have increased a lot. nowadays there are more than 100.000 weekly cocaine users, 25.000 persons are annually treated from cocaine abuse or dependence, and cocaine has an important impact on medical emergency services, while its impact on mortality is unknown. both cannabis use and related problems are increasing too (there are half a million of daily users). we propose to maintain and to strengthen harm reduction programs (mmt, syringe exchange, save-use and injection rooms, hepatitis a and b vaccination, etc.), to urgently develop specific strategies targeted to reduce overdose mortality and cocaine related problems, and to re-evaluate the effectiveness of preventive and supply control strategies.

Abstract: hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (hnpcc) or lynch syndrome is an autosomic dominant syndrome involving 596-1096 of colorectal cancer patients. mutations in mlh1 and msh2 genes account for most cases. these two genes particípate in the dna mismatch repair pathway. therefore mutation carriers show microsatellite instability (msi) in tumors. this syndrome is characterized by the early development of colorectal cancer (before 50 years) and an increased incidence of cancer in other organs. we report four siblings from a family diagnosed with hnpcc. all of them were subjected to colonic surgery for colorectal cancer moreover, one patient developed an ampulloma after her colon surgery. the molecular-genetic analysis revealed three brothers with microsatellite instability in the tumor tissue, the absence of the mlh1 protein, and the presence of a germ une mutation localized in introm 15 ofthe mlh1 gene

The activities of health professionals, whether from the aspect of the student, and later in clinical practice, research or education, are intensive in information.
This study proposes a conceptual distinction between the so called significance axis and the teacher’s conceptions. Meanwhile the first relate to the group of subjects, the conceptions are concerned with the subjects’ ideas. The axis emerge from lexicometric analysis of the teacher’s discourse, collected by recording their oral discourse in the classroom and by interviewing them. At the end, this study links the concept of significance axis with that of habitus in Bourdieu.
