Beliefs, Values and Morals: The Philosophical Underpinnings of Dysthanasia  [PDF]
Filipe Monteiro
Open Journal of Philosophy (OJPP) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ojpp.2016.64037
Abstract: In medical practice, the treatment and prognosis in the end of life has associated to ethical dilemmas, which are established in conformity with individual or collective beliefs and values. Dysthanasia from Greek, means to make death difficult, and it is currently an ethical problem with significant consequences. Considering that death itself has two moments, the process of death and the moment of death, dysthanasia is the undue prolongation of the process of death with the help of technological devices that allows the life sustaining procedures. Although it is through the technological advances that the moment of death can be delayed, it is the beliefs and values that are deep rooted in the sub conscience of the physicians that are responsible for the demeanor of end of life ethical dilemmas. Beliefs and values when encompassed in areas like phenomenology of knowledge, dialectic of technology, conflict of values and existentialism and metaphysics, can somehow explain this issue that is current, emerging and compelling.
Transfers between Spaces of Communication, Tourism and Staging of Heritage  [PDF]
Christian Dennys Monteiro de Oliveira
Creative Education (CE) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ce.2016.73047
Abstract: The present study represented an interpretation resulting from a survey on the property representations of religious festival held in Almonte (Huelva, Spain), during the transfer of the image of the Virgin of Rocio seat of the municipality, between August 2012 and May 2013. The investigation collected opinions of teachers and students from two secondary schools in the city, in order to characterize the educational meanings of such an extraordinary event and organizer of cultural expressions. Reading the geographical links between heritage and forms of dissemination (media and tourism), led us to develop the concept of “geo-education”. Structured from the phenomenological and cultural perspectives that underpin geographic readings in culture studies, the geo- education emerges as a non-formal teaching of the meaning of the festive reordered places rituality (or religious representations). Sense that answers to the recognition of the vectorial forces (communicative, tourist and scenography) are intermediated by the contemporary patrimonial question. The result of the work lies in the composition of basic theoretical syntheses of treatment and use of modern religious devotion as geo-education’s heritage.
Matergraphy and Heritage: Marian Shrines as Symbolic and Vector Spaces of Latinity  [PDF]
Christian Dennys Monteiro De Oliveira
Open Journal of Social Sciences (JSS) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/jss.2017.510016
This article develops the transformation of studies on Brazilian shrines, based on the Catholic invocation of Our Lady of Conception (Concei??o Aparecida), in a cultural reflection on the notion of the symbolic space in Latin America. Considering the expressive historical, semiotic, and institutional aspects of Latin America’s cultural heritage, this study recognizes the emergence of a network of identification for religious spaces. A geography of cultural projection that helps to articulate the interpretation of symbolic vectors (in festivals, media, and tourism), facilitates both comparison with other localities (municipalities-shrines) in Brazil and Latin America, and the characterization of the theatrical aesthetic of devotion in the construction of continental heritage. Summarizing the qualitative verifications made during three years of research on strategies to irradiate devotion to the Virgin Mary, this study achieved an aesthetic strength evaluation of religious patrimony as a challenge to systems of the heritage of Latinity. We concluded that the greatest risk to religious cultural patrimony lies in the growth of fundamentalist ideologies, which seek to discredit the legitimacy of the Marian tradition, and the religious and cultural syncretism in continental identity.
The New Orleans Carnival as a Theater Space: A Patrimonial Landscape in the Understanding of Translatinity  [PDF]
Christian Dennys Monteiro de Oliveira
Open Journal of Social Sciences (JSS) , 2019, DOI: 10.4236/jss.2019.72003
Abstract: The present study represents an attempt to read the patrimonial landscape composed by the sacred-profane festivities of the New Orleans Carnival, known as Mardi Gras. It uses a methodology of comparative observation and qualitative analytical procedures to link the theatricality of the city to the performance of Afro-descended groups (the “Indians”), the aesthetics of their self-presentation and their engagement in cultural resistance. To do so, the study projects inequalities and cultural shocks with reference to the play A Streetcar Named Desire, by Tennessee Williams. The main purpose is to elaborate a concept of a theater space where it is possible to develop modes of interpretation of the Latin American culture, that is, a “translatinity” a political and social overflow of African and Amerindian values, especially from the second half of the 20th century, in the culturally polarized cities of the American continent.

Corpo e masculinidade na revista VIP Exame
Monteiro, Marko;
Cadernos Pagu , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-83332001000100011
Abstract: in this article i elaborate theoretical comments on the subject of corporeality and the new forms of experiencing the body that are present in contemporary times. on the basis of a research with a brazilian men's magazine, vip exame, which involved the analysis of issues of the magazine as well as an observation of the working process of the reporters and journalists, i focus my comments on the way the masculine body is treated by the magazine and how a discourse emerges on masculinity where attention to "good looks" becomes an important feature of a successful masculinity. on the basis of these observations i go on to discuss feminist and other theories of the subject, in order to understand how the reflexive monitoring of the body is increasingly important in the constitution of gender identities.
Mudan?as recentes nos processos de governan?a territorial em Portugal
Finisterra - Revista Portuguesa de Geografia , 2009,
Abstract: the current context in which nation-states find themselves is clearly different from that in which they were founded and consolidated. this fact has given rise to the need to rethink both their modus operandi and their role in society and the economy. against this new, fragmented and complex social setting, the urban policy polis xxi has evolved and become increasingly relevant and useful for the study of new models of urban governance and territorial development. this note seeks to: 1) sum up a set of conceptual considerations with regard to the challenges in terms of territorial governance that are faced by western nationstates in general and portugal in particular; 2) discuss the urban policy polis xxi against this new and evolving background; and 3) propose a framework for evaluating the performance of the inter-organizational partnerships promoted within the context of the urban policy polis xxi as a new territorial governance mechanism.
Teatro anat?mico digital: práticas de representa??o do corpo na ciência
Monteiro, Marko;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702011000300003
Abstract: contemporary scientific practices for representing the body are investigated ethnographically through a comparative analysis with the renaissance anatomical theater, a practice used to understand the body in early modern science. first and foremost, i seek to reveal the manner in which visualization of the inside of the body produces knowledge of its functioning. the conclusion is that, currently, the production of knowledge greatly privileges the validation of code and modeling of the biological processes in which one wishes to intervene. the objective is to unveil the meaning of the circulation of images, data and theories that bring together material bodies, visualization techniques and scientists, enabling the production of truth about the body in a biological sense.
Representa??es digitais e intera??o incorporada: um estudo etnográfico de práticas científicas de modelagem computacional
Monteiro, Marko;
Mana , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-93132009000200008
Abstract: this text discusses how virtual objects participate interactively in the production of knowledge in scientific practice. the article is based on the ethnographic observation of an interdisciplinary team of scientists whose work involves computer modelling of heat transfer in the human prostate. the ethnography found that although scientific imaging may be considered a form of 'simplifying' the apprehension of data, an intense interpretative process is required to achieve shared meanings concerning the images. these meanings are constructed through oral communication and embodied interactions with virtual objects during the interactions between scientists. a better understanding of these interpretative practices is needed given the growing importance of the use of 3d digital imaging and computational models in contemporary science. these techniques are increasingly used not only to describe truths about nature, but also as powerful tools for intervening in the world.
Programa tutorial em crian?as do 4.o ano de escolaridade: Benefícios cognitivos
Análise Psicológica , 1998,
Abstract: the present work was designed with the purpose of studying the peer-tutoring system. this system, in its most general form, can be defined as a pedagogical method in which a ?competent? student act as a tutor of a less ?competent? classmate. with this research we aimed emphasizing the existence of a tutoring effect, that is to say, we wanted to examine the presence of personal cognitive gains in 9-year-old children who were tutoring younger children. we worked with 14 third grade students (8 years old) and 22 fourth graders (9 years old). the control group included eight of the fourth graders who were assigned individual work, whereas the experimental group consisted of 14 dyads, each of them included a tutor (fourth grader) and a tutee (third grader) who was helped during the session. the task presented to all subjects consisted on looking some words that were given by the present researcher in a dictionary of their own language. in the dyadic situation each tutor helped his (or her) classmate in solving the task, which was unknown to him (or her). the results that we obtained led us to the following conclusions: children that act as tutors present more individual cognitive gains than their classmates who perform individual work.
