A abordagem de redu??o de danos em espa?os educativos n?o formais: um estudo qualitativo no estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil

Abstract: this paper discusses the contributions of the harm reduction approach towards educational practices relating to health and drugs, in non-formal situations, from an analysis on the theoretical and methodological fundamentals and activities of a project developed by the oswaldo cruz institute, among educators from nongovernmental organizations in rio de janeiro, from 2006 to 2007. guided by a qualitative approach, this study analyzed the educators' professional practices, the paths taken and the institutional context, by means of document analysis, interviews and direct observations. the findings revealed that the educators had appropriated and given new meaning to the concepts dealt with in the project, in relation to education for autonomy, harm reduction and vulnerability, guided by a dialogical and critical approach towards the knowledge construction process.

Abstract: this paper presents the results of the evaluation of the "jogo da onda", which deals with drug abuse and hiv/aids prevention, and was developed by the funda??o oswaldo cruz. based on a qualitative approach (focus group, direct observation of game sets and questionnaires), the text analyzes the opinion of 62 students and 17 teachers of public schools (rio de janeiro/brazil) on the game and its topics. according to those students and teachers, it provides information, stimulates thinking and fosters the discussion on daily situations related to drug use. the students' view on the topics approached by the game suggests the users' perception relevance in evaluating the reach of messages transmitted by educational resources. based on the results of the study, new contents, especially on reproductive health and gender relationships, were developed and evaluated. they will be incorporated in the forthcoming editions of the "jogo da onda". these new contents emphasize the interface between the different challenges faced by youth nowadays such as aids, std, illicit and licit drug use, sexual initiation, and unplanned pregnancy, among others.

Abstract: Este artigo apresenta os resultados da avalia o do "Jogo da Onda", um jogo sobre a preven o contra HIV/AIDS e uso de drogas, desenvolvido pela Funda o Oswaldo Cruz. Informado por uma abordagem qualitativa (grupo focal, observa o direta do uso do jogo e questionário), o estudo analisa a opini o de 62 estudantes e 17 educadores da rede pública de ensino (Rio de Janeiro/Brasil) sobre o uso do jogo e as temáticas tratadas no material. Para os estudantes e educadores o jogo gera informa o, estimula a reflex o e o diálogo acerca de situa es do cotidiano relacionadas ao uso de drogas. A vis o dos jovens acerca dos temas do jogo aponta para a relevancia da percep o do usuário na avalia o do alcance das mensagens veiculadas em recursos de educa o em saúde. Os resultados do estudo motivaram o desenvolvimento e a avalia o de novos conteúdos, principalmente sobre saúde reprodutiva e rela es de gênero, que ir o integrar as edi es futuras do "Jogo da Onda". Os novos conteúdos privilegiam as interfaces entre os desafios enfrentados pela juventude na atualidade: epidemia de HIV/AIDS, DST, consumo de drogas lícitas e ilícitas, inicia o sexual, gravidez n o-planejada, entre outros.
Acervo de materiais educativos sobre hanseníase: um dispositivo da memória e das práticas comunicativas

Abstract: educational materials form part of the guidelines for hansen's disease control programs. the aims of the present study were to describe the process of creating a database for 276 educational materials on hansen's disease that were produced by public and non-governmental institutions between 1972 and 2008, and to analyze the type, target public and objectives. the database was set up electronically and contained a descriptive and thematic analysis and a link to the complete document containing the materials. the materials were targeted at the general public (75%), healthcare professionals (12%), children and adolescents (6%), individuals with hansen's disease (3%), and others (4%). pamphlets (26%), leaflets (24%) and posters (23%) predominated, followed by primers (15%), flipbooks (3%) and others (9%). they aimed to increase self-awareness and case detection and to publicize healthcare services. biomedical discourse using technical-prescriptive language and hierarchical relationships between enunciator and target predominated.
STD/AIDS prevention in Portuguese-speaking Africa: a review of the recent literature in the social sciences and health

Abstract: the article reviews academic literature in the social sciences and health on the problems and challenges of std/aids prevention in portuguese-speaking african countries. based on a bibliographic survey of the scielo, pubmed, and sociological abstracts databases between 1997 and 2007, the research under review was organized into two groups, according to content. the first group of studies sought to understand std/aids vulnerability among social groups by examining local cultural and socioeconomic factors as related to gender dynamics, sexuality, color/race, religion and health care. the second group encompassed critical assessments of shortcomings in the std/aids educational messages delivered by governments and international agencies. attention is called to the way in which the presence of traditional medicine systems and the occurrence of civil wars in the post-colonial period impact the std/aids epidemic in the african countries under study.

Abstract: this forum on the challenges of preventing std/aids in portuguese-speaking african countries contains three articles and a postscript. the first paper reviews academic production on the topic from the fields of the social sciences and of health, with special attention on how local cultural and socioeconomic factors impact the dynamics of the epidemic. based on an ethnographic study of a region in southern mozambique, the second paper analyzes the notion of 'tradition' within the context of mozambique and how it affects perceptions of the local population's vulnerability to std/aids. the third and final article discusses common ground and differences between government and civil society in gender approaches by community hiv/aids projects in mozambique. their observations suggest that important mistakes have been made in std/aids prevention discourse and initiatives in african countries because the unique features of local development models and cultural systems have not been taken into account.
