Abstract: Pandanus foetidus is an important medicinal plant having widespread application in a variety of disorders. The aim of this study was the phytochemical investigation and evaluation of the anti-oxidant, total phenolic content and analgesic activities of the whole plant Pandanus foetidus. Phytochemical screening of the ethanolic extract of Pandanus foetidus ensured the presence of carbohydrates, glycosides, alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids and steroids. The anti-oxidant activity was measured by DPPH free radical scavenging activity (IC50=48 μg/ml). The plant Pandanus foetidus shows total phenolic content test due to the presence of reducing sugar, tannins and flavonoids.The crude ethanolic extract of the tubers of Pandanus foetidus exhibited significant analgesic activity at a dose of 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg with 71.15% and 80.77 % inhibition of writhing respectively.

Abstract: Ipomoea mauritiana is an important medicinal plant having widespread application in a variety of disorders. Phytochemical screening of the ethanolic extract of Ipomoea mauritiana ensured the presence of Alkaloids, Tannins, Steroids, Gums, Glycosides, Carbohydrate and Saponins. The anti-oxidant activity was measured by DPPH free radical scavenging activity (IC50 = 164 μg/ml). The crude ethanolic extract did not reveal any significant anti-microbial activity. The crude ethanolic extract of the tubers of Ipomoea mauritiana exhibited significant analgesic activity at a dose of 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg with 71.15% and 80.77 % inhibition of writhing respectively.

Abstract: The vital signs monitor is essentially a real time device that displays certain received signals from the human body. It is widely used in medical institutes. The projects of this sort under taken so far have used windows to display the output whereas this project aims to generate a real time display of the signals received from thehuman body using Linux. Linux was preferred for its ability to simultaneously process data and display it in real time. This includes creating appropriate sensors, proper modifying circuits and ensuring real time display. The project has a channel for the variable that will be continuously measured and displayed by the device. The variable is electrocardiogram. The development of this project was circled around the need for real time display. Appropriate circuits modified the input signals to make them suitable for DAQ card reading. Linux was used to display the output of DAQcard in real time. This enhanced the real time characteristic of the output.

Abstract: Neural networks have been extensively studied for applications related to face recognition by training data sets extracted from facial images. In this paper, a feed-forward neural network-based upright frontal face detection method is developed. Local statistics of face images such as mean, standard deviation and kurtosis are used as datasets to be trained by feed forward neural networks. Each of the images is subdivided into several small blocks which are used to determine the datasets with two combinations of mean, standard deviation or kurtosis to train the feed-forward network. The extensive simulations are conducted using different images of samesubjects from a standard face database to study and compare the face detection performance of the neural networks. It is found that neural network that uses the datasets of kurtosis gives the best performance among the two processes. Finally, the main focus is to improve the detection speed rather than performance.
Antidiabetic and Glycogenesis Effects of Different Fractions of Ethanolic Extract of Leaves of Mangifera indica (Linn.) in Normal and Alloxan Induced Diabetic Rats

Abstract: Diabetes is a major public health problem. The development of new therapies that are able to improve glycemia management and even to cure diabetes is of great interest. The antihyperglycemic activity of leaves of Mangifera indica was evaluated with scientific approaches. The study was undertaken to investigate the antihyperglycemic, Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) and glycogenesis effects of the different fractions (Petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and chloroform) of ethanolic extract of Mangifera indica. The different extracts were administered intraperitoneally as a single dose of 150 mg kg-1 b.wt. to normal, glucose induced and alloxan induced diabetic rats and found to reduce blood glucose level significantly (p<0.05). Beside these, the different fractions of Mangifera indica to the alloxan-induced diabetic rats resulted in the significant elevation of liver glycogen content which was decreased by 50.60% in diabetic control. The effects of plant extracts were compared with standard drug metformin. The phytochemical screening tests indicate the different constituents such as triterpines, alkaloids, flavonoids etc. are present in the plant which have the antidiabetic property. Thus, this investigation paves the way for plant based diabetic treatment and indicates that various fractions (Petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and chloroform) of the ethanolic extract of Mangifera indica have favorable effect in bringing down the severity of diabetes as well as increase glycogenesis activity by increasing the cellular uptake of glucose.

Abstract: China is the second largest recipient of FDI inflows nowadays, a preferred destiny for the global investors after USA. In study, FDI is said to be creating a favored local group depending on skill intensities, it requires and if the investment is technologically advanced than the host country s state, then this can lead to greater income disparity. China is evidenced with a spectacularly huge FDI inflow in the past decade along with increasing income inequality. This study attempts to analyze, whether FDI inflows in China has any role in increasing inequality over time. Finding of this study is quite clear: foreign funded industries in China are enjoying persistently higher wages than the national averages and the higher the skilled intensive foreign investment is the higher is the wages.
Supply Response of Potato in Bangladesh: A Vector Error Correction Approach

Abstract: An attempt has been made in this study to examine the supply response of potato in Bangladesh by using the vector error correction approach. The short-run price elasticity was 0.45 while the long run elasticity was 0.62. Price policies are effective in obtaining the desired level of output for potato. If intervention in the market is of necessity, then it must be implemented during the harvest season for altering price expectations. Also emphases should be given to increase potato export and establishing export oriented potato processing industries.
Application of artificial neural networks for modelling correlations in age hardenable aluminium alloys

Abstract: Purpose: This paper discusses some of the preliminary results of an ongoing research on the applications of artificial neural networks (ANNs) in modelling, predicting and simulating correlations between mechanical properties of age hardenable aluminium alloys as a function of alloy composition.Design/methodology/approach: Appropriate combinations of inputs and outputs were selected for neural network modelling. Multilayer feedforward networks were created and trained using datasets from public literature. Influences of alloying elements, alloy composition and processing parameters on mechanical properties of aluminium alloys were predicted and simulated using ANNs models.Two sample t-tests were used to analyze the prediction accuracy of the trained ANNs.Findings: Good performances of the neural network models were achieved. The models were able to predict mechanical properties within acceptable margins of error and were able to provide relevant simulated data for correlating alloy composition and processing parameters with mechanical properties. Therefore, ANNs models are convenient and powerful tools that can provide useful information which can be used to identify desired properties in new aluminium alloys for practical applications in new and/or improved aluminium products.Research limitations/implications: Few public data bases are available for modelling properties. Minor contradictions on the experimental values of properties and alloy compositions were also observed. Future work will include further development of simulated data into property charts.Practical implications: Correlations between mechanical properties and alloy compositions can help in identifying a suitable alloy for a new or improved aluminum product application. In addition, availability of simulated structure-process-property data or charts assists in reducing the time and costs of trial and error experimental approaches by providing near-optimal values that can be used as starting point in experimental work.Originality/value: Since the simulated data provides near-optimal values, manufacturers of new and/or improved aluminum alloys can use the simulated data as guidelines for narrowing down extensive experimental work. This in turn reduces the process design cycle times. Designers of new and/or improved aluminum products can also use the simulated data as a guideline for correlating property-application information, which is useful in preliminary design phase.
Sub-acute Toxicity Study of 5-Hydroxy - 2(Hydroxy-Methyl) 4H-pyran-4 One, Isolated from Aspergillus fumigatus

Abstract: The sub-acute toxicity studies of 5-Hydroxy-2 (Hydroxy-methyl) 4H- pyran-4 one, a metabolite of Aspergillus fumigatus was carried out in rats. The compound was administered at a dose of 300 μg/rat/day for 21 days. The gross general observation such as changes of body weight, hematological profiles, biochemical parameters of blood and the histopathology of the liver, kidney, heart, lung, spleen were investigated both in control and experimental rats. The body weights of the rats were slightly increased. The change of hematological and biochemical parameters were statistically insignificant. No abnormalities were found in the histopathology of the liver, kidney, heart, lung and spleen in the experimental group of rats when compared with control group of rats.
Nutritional Changes of Four Varieties of Mulberry Leaves Infected with Fungus (Pyllactinia corylea)

Abstract: The nutritional composition such as moisture, ash, lipid protein, carbohydrate, total chlorophyll, crude fibre, phenol, β-carotene, vitamin-B1, vitamin-B2, vitamin-C, Calcium, phosphorus and iron content of four varieties of healthy and Phyllectinia corylea infected mulberry leaves at mature stage has been analyzed. The mulberry leaves are considered as a good sources of starch, protein, crude fibre, minerals, vitamin-C, β-carotene and were estimated about 6-7, 4.0-4.6, .0, .0-3.5, 15-132, 00-120 mg%, respectively. Moisture, ash, lipid, crude fibre, carbohydrate, vitamins and minerals content were decreased significantly but protein and phenol content were increased after infected of mulberry leaves with fungus, Phyllectinia corylea.
